Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 142: The Road Tried to Take Jiang Instead
The female set one foot into the moonlit cup.
Silver closed over her webbing.
She lowered her body carefully, testing the cup before giving it weight. Rookery calls continued behind her. In Ninebell, the male raised his beak from Jiang’s shoulder and watched the dark foot descend toward a floor it had never touched.
The chick heard her step. Its head moved beneath the brood fold, and one small claw pressed against the male’s flattened toes.
Inside Ninebell, Jiang’s good foot vanished to the ankle.
Stone remained visible around his leg. He could see every claw beneath the pale surface, including the backward one bent where no emperor foot should bend. None of them touched the floor he felt dropping away.
The male’s weight shifted against his breast.
Jiang tried to pull free. Silver tightened around the hidden ankle and drew his body toward the wall instead. His sound flipper scraped stone. The bound one dragged beneath the adult’s flank.
His useful foothold was gone. The numb leg could not replace it, and the male’s weight trapped the injured shoulder between feathers and floor. If Jiang followed the pull, the adult lost his prop. If he resisted with his breast, the road took that resistance as more weight to carry.
Pava caught the warm hide behind him.
"I can pull him," she said.
"You pull him, the father loses that side," Aylin answered.
The chick called under the brood fold as if testing the argument.
Pava’s hands tightened on the hide. "I am aware."
Hest moved beside her and took the other corner. He did not pull until she did.
Pava tested the hide with one short draw.
Jiang moved backward. The male’s flank dropped at once. His brood feathers settled over the chick’s beak, muffling the next call into a scrape.
Pava released the hide before Hest could add his strength. The male regained the narrow lift by leaning harder on Jiang, and Jiang’s shoulder wrap darkened along one edge.
"That is the choice," Pava said. "I can keep one of them from being taken."
"You do not choose which one," Kedra said.
"I know. I dislike it anyway."
Across the wall, the female’s lifted body stopped above the first cup. Her foot remained caught in silver, but it had not appeared in Ninebell. The road had found another active penguin on the near edge and begun carrying him toward her instead.
Brinn saw Jiang’s shadow change.
His black emperor outline lengthened along the wall beneath the two moon angles. The female’s outline stayed where it had begun. Between them, the male had become little more than a low dark shape over the chick.
Jiang’s far shadow stood where the female’s partner should have been. Its failed flipper hung wrong, and the rear claw bent backward across moonlit ice. Even a damaged road could tell he was a penguin. It could not tell why he was there.
"It took the body holding the edge," Brinn said.
Kedra bore harder on her outer line. Pain whitened the skin around her swollen wrist. "Then the road is wrong."
"The road is broken. Wrong would require judgment."
"I feel much safer now."
Aylin kept her forearm planted opposite Kedra. "Can we shift it back?"
Valea watched the three penguin shadows rather than the silver. "Not by putting our weight in the center. It would lose every separate shape again."
Aylin shifted her forearm as cold reached the reopened cuts in her palm. Kedra’s sound hand slipped on the cloth beneath her, then found the outer lip again. Neither woman could approach Jiang without bringing their shadows toward the middle.
"Then we hold the edges," Kedra said. "They choose the middle."
No one pulled Jiang free.
The silver reached his breast.
Cold passed through damaged feathers without wetting them. Ninebell thinned around him. Pava’s hands became dark shapes behind moonlight, and the rubble over Tideglass turned into a distant green smear.
A second rookery came close around him.
Hundreds of emperor voices traveled beneath two moons. Wind crossed open ice. Bodies answered one another without bells, false calls, priests, gates, or anyone asking Jiang to fit through a hole while bleeding.
He smelled salt and old feathers through air that did not exist in Ninebell. A dark line of adults faced the wind with chicks sheltered behind their feet. Farther out, birds returned from a sea silvered by two separate moons.
The road offered no promise that they would accept him. It offered open ice, living voices, and a body that made sense to everyone who saw it.
One part of him wanted that ice.
It did not know him. It might drive him away before he crossed ten steps. It was still a place where a penguin body was ordinary, and Jiang had almost forgotten what ordinary sounded like.
The male sagged against him.
His breast pressed Jiang’s injured shoulder into stone. Beneath the weight, the chick gave a shorter call and scratched one small foot across the male’s skin.
That little scratch did not belong to the far colony. Neither did the adult who had bitten Jiang, accepted his heat, and now trusted him with weight Jiang had become afraid to lose.
Jiang stopped fighting the pull.
He planted the edge of his beak against Ninebell’s floor and held the male where the adult had chosen to lean. The road took more of Jiang’s leg. He let it, though fear tightened every muscle that could still answer.
Pava saw his body settle. "That is not permission for the road to keep him."
"No," Aylin said. "It is time for the pair to answer."
The female made the first call.
Her note reached toward Jiang because his body occupied the return. She heard the mistake and cut the ending short.
She struck the road once with the foot still under two moons. Silver jumped beneath Jiang’s breast. Her black outline turned from his shadow and bent toward the low shape covering the chick.
The male lifted his beak from Jiang’s shoulder.
His first answer failed in his throat. He tried again with his breast still over the chick. The sound carried hunger, exhausted air, and the broken ending the female had learned before the low cups appeared.
The chick clicked before his breath ran out.
She changed her answer around him.
No repeated rhythm crossed the silver. Her next call began lower, waited through the place where his voice failed, and finished only after the chick clicked between them.
The male answered the new space.
Their shadows turned toward each other.
The male’s outline gained a head, then the curve of his brood fold. Jiang’s shadow remained beside him but no longer occupied the far end. Silver divided along the place where the adults’ flank feathers touched.
Jiang’s outline stopped lengthening under the two moons. Silver loosened around his breast, then his ankle. His claws touched Ninebell stone again one at a time.
Feeling returned as pain rather than strength. Jiang curled the good toes into the cup and kept his breast planted while the road slid away from his leg.
He kept his flank beneath the male while sliding the good foot out of the moonline. Pava moved the warm hide into the empty cup as his body withdrew, giving the adult another edge to feel without replacing Jiang’s living support.
The road no longer followed him.
On the far side, the female lowered her caught foot.
Its black toes appeared in Ninebell inside the first low cup.
The leg followed to the ankle. Moonlight ran upward through wet feathers, while the rest of her body remained beneath the distant sky. She leaned toward her mate and chick, trying to bring the second foot after the first.
The first cup closed around her.
Stone folded around her ankle without blood or break. Her first foot stood in Ninebell. Her second remained under two moons.
The female pulled once and could move neither way.
Pava left Jiang’s hide and approached the trapped foot, then stopped when the female struck through the feeding reach. Her beak landed in Ninebell while her head remained under another sky.
The male answered the strike from Jiang’s shoulder.
Silver tightened around the mother’s ankle.
