Chapter 110: The Penguin Silenced the Fifth Bell

  • Next Chapter

Black-green water burst through the Bone chime grate and struck Jiang in the breast.

The loose healer cloth tore away. He slid across the tilted floor until Aylin caught the green cord still tied around his body.

Behind her, the four surviving Last Party shapes advanced together.

Iron bars grew across the tower doors. Glass hooks pulled at every breath. Rootwood chains climbed the cracked supports. Bone drew a white bowstring between Aylin’s funeral line and Kedra’s.

Bronze had no body left. Its tower kept ringing anyway.

"The Roadwright load moved into the conductor," Valea said. She braced one foot against the chime grate and caught the bronze cable running beneath it. "All five crafts are in there."

Varn’s source chain jerked at the floor break. "And they are pulling from below me."

Hest forced his bent gate bar between the grate and the wall. The next surge bowed the iron but left a gap wide enough for Jiang’s head.

"I can hold the mouth," he said. "I cannot reach the throat."

Jiang bit the green cord and pulled toward the opening.

Aylin held on. Water ran off him colder than the floor.

"The last narrow road put you through broken glass."

Jiang planted his feet and pulled again.

"I remember your opinion of sensible choices."

Kedra lowered herself beside him with her good hand against the wall. Fresh blood had reached the edge of her shoulder padding, and the white line around her throat tightened whenever Bone moved its bow.

"There are five chime teeth inside," she said. "The fourth is false. It sounds, but it does not carry the strike."

"You remember that?" Aylin asked.

"My hand does. The rest of me can be confused after we survive."

Pava brought two separate breathing masks from the ward and pressed one into each woman’s hands. "Keep your own mask. If either of you trades, shares, or decides to become noble about air, I will personally revive you so I can complain."

Kedra managed half a smile. Aylin did not, but some fear left her grip.

Pava checked the cord around Jiang. It crossed below the failed-flipper cradle and stayed clear of his open shoulder.

"He has ordinary breath," she said. "Do not mistake a penguin for a miracle."

"I do not," Aylin said.

She looked at Jiang. "I mistake him for stubborn."

Jiang wanted the salt brick back against his belly. He wanted dry feathers, enough fish to make his stomach quiet, and one night when Aylin did not have a funeral line around her throat. Kedra had earned the same chance without needing to prove whose face she wore.

The duct frightened him. It was too tight to turn inside, and Deep Lung would not rescue him if the water stole his one useful pocket. Fear did not make the opening wider. It only made the warmth behind him harder to leave.

Jiang stepped into the flooded duct.

His chest displaced the water before his feet left the grate. He tucked the injured flipper close, swept once with the sound one, and let his rigid body take the narrow curve without folding. Both webbed feet drove him beyond Hest’s bar.

Darkness closed over his back.

Bellmakers had shaped the duct to carry a note down, not a body up. Bone teeth crowded its roof. Water moved toward Jiang while the conductor pulled the other way, leaving twisting pockets between them.

He did not call Frostwake.

First he had to find the part worth freezing.

Jiang kicked through the first turn. His white belly flashed beneath black water, then vanished when he rolled onto his dark side. The good flipper kept his shoulder from scraping the bone wall. His cracked beak stayed forward, testing each obstruction before his chest committed to it.

The first chime tooth struck his back as Bronze rang.

Pain traveled through his cradle. He kept swimming.

Outside, Valea felt the impact through the cable. "First tooth!"

Varn pulled his source chain sideways. The duct rotated enough to keep Jiang from being pinned beneath the second tooth.

The warder shape brought its iron bar down on Varn’s chain.

Hest abandoned the grate for one step. He caught the descending bar on his own and locked shoulder to shoulder with the wooden shape.

The chime mouth began closing behind Jiang.

Aylin shoved Hest’s bent gate bar deeper with both hands. "I have the mouth."

"Then do not lose your fingers," Hest said.

Aylin bared her teeth. "Excellent warder advice."

Pava stayed between the Glass hook and both women. Each pull from the healer shape fogged their masks. She snapped clear splints across the white strands, breaking the route before Aylin’s breath could touch Kedra’s.

Kedra watched the bronze cable twitch across Valea’s palm.

"Second tooth," Valea called.

Jiang reached an air pocket and lifted his beak. One breath entered before the water climbed after him. Deep Lung remained silent. One breath would have to carry him to the next pocket or back out.

The third tooth struck ahead of his face.

Its base held five lines under a skin of black-green film: bronze wire, iron tongue, clear breath tube, root fiber, and a bone rod running into the bell above.

Jiang drove forward before his breath failed.

The entire bundle slid away from him.

Outside, the delver shape had wrapped its chain around Varn’s source line and was hauling the conductor deeper. Varn’s boots slipped toward the collapsed lane.

Valea passed her bronze cable through Hest’s gate bar. "I can turn the bundle, but only when the false tooth releases."

"It will strike after the third," Kedra said. "Do nothing."

Bone rang hard enough to shake dust loose.

The fourth tooth fell inside the duct.

Aylin felt Jiang’s cord jump and pulled.

Kedra caught her wrist. "No."

"It hit him," Aylin said.

"It made sound. It carries no weight. If you pull now, you put him under the fifth."

Aylin wanted the cord back against her chest with Jiang attached to its other end. She had watched too many roads close around him and heard too many people call sacrifice necessary after someone smaller paid it.

She did not know whether she trusted Kedra. A matching face was not enough. Yet Kedra had broken her own path record for strangers in the ward, and she had named the first three teeth correctly. Aylin trusted that choice for one terrible strike.

Aylin’s hand shook around the cord. She stopped pulling.

Inside, the false tooth scraped feathers from Jiang’s back and passed through the water without driving the conductor. Kedra’s memory had been right.

The fifth tooth began to move.

Bone’s bowstring tightened outside. Aylin’s and Kedra’s white throat lines drew toward each other. The masks in their hands fogged with different rhythms, but the space between them started filling with one rib cage.

Kedra released Aylin and climbed to her feet.

Pava caught her good elbow. "Your shoulder will not take another fall."

"Then do not let me fall."

Kedra stepped onto the cracked traveler-coil base, directly beneath the Bone bow. She raised two fingers toward Valea.

Her two fingers held the Roadwright stop signal.

Valea held the cable still.

The hunter shape turned its bow from Aylin to Kedra. A bone arrow formed against Kedra’s throat line.

Aylin moved away from the chime cord instead of toward her. She picked up the broken marked Roadwright blade and crossed the tower on the hunter’s blind side.

Kedra kept the stop signal raised while the arrow drew.

Jiang passed the false tooth.

His breast struck the five-line bundle. Black-green film touched the wet feathers beneath his belly and curled around both feet.

Now he had the right layer.

[FROSTWAKE I: CONTACT ICE | COST: RECOVERED WARMTH]

Heat left Jiang through his breast and webbed feet.

Clear ice formed only where his body touched the film. It crept around the five-line bundle no farther than the connected moisture beneath him. Bronze, iron, glass, root, and bone remained intact inside a shell that had become white and brittle.

Jiang clamped his cracked beak over the bone rod and held.

Cold emptied his claws. Hunger clenched his belly. The good flipper lost strength against the duct wall.

Jiang wanted to release the rod. His beak hurt, his lungs needed air, and the last pocket was already behind him. Through the cord came no promise that the others were ready, only Aylin’s hand holding steady instead of dragging him away.

He struck the green cord once with his foot.

Kedra changed her raised hand from stop to strike.

Valea hauled the bronze cable around Hest’s gate bar. The frozen bundle rotated inside the duct.

Varn dropped his full weight onto the source chain. Root fiber pulled tight beneath Jiang.

Hest drove the warder shape’s iron bar through the tower floor and trapped the iron tongue against stone.

Pava wound the healer shape’s white strands around her last glass splint and broke it across her knee. The breath tube cracked inside the frozen shell.

Aylin reached the hunter shape and drove the broken Roadwright blade through its bow hand. The bone arrow loosed into the ceiling instead of Kedra’s throat.

Kedra brought both hands down despite her shoulder and struck the traveler-coil base.

The old Glass crack ran into the chime duct.

Five guild crafts pulled in five different directions.

The frozen black-green film broke first.

Jiang felt the bone rod split inside his beak.

Varn’s chain tore the root fiber downward. Valea ripped the bronze wire through the grate. Hest levered the iron tongue free. Pava’s broken tube emptied harmless white mist above the ward.

Bone Hunter’s bell gave one unfinished note.

Then its throat cracked from crown to duct.

The four Last Party shapes stopped.

Roadglass faces turned blank again. Rootwood knees folded. Their tools struck the floor without hands to carry them, and black-green water fled through the severed conductor into the dark below.

Aylin’s funeral line broke at the throat.

Kedra’s line broke on its own.

No rib cage joined them.

Inside the duct, the current reversed. Jiang could no longer hold the bone rod. Water threw him toward the grate with Frostwake silent inside him.

Aylin pulled the green cord. Hest caught Jiang as he cleared the broken mouth and passed him straight to Pava.

Pava wrapped him against a dry coat. The salt brick had cooled on the tilted floor. Jiang’s breast feathers were stiff with contact ice, his claws numb again, and his hunger sharp enough to make the healer’s leather straps smell edible.

Nothing healed. No strength replaced the warmth he had spent.

"Bone is quiet," Hest said.

He looked through the cracked tower wall toward the silent fifth bell.

For most of his working life, that bell had warned Hest what shape waited beyond a broken gate. Its outline had saved his first shield partner from a tunnel beast neither of them could see through smoke. Silencing it was not a clean victory. Ninebell would feel the missing note at the next bad road.

"When the next traveler dies on a road, Ninebell will not see the killer’s outline."

Varn pulled his source hook from the broken conductor. Black-green water still coated its point.

"Then we learn to look before the funeral," he said. "This thing is still below us."

Kedra sat where Pava put her and accepted fresh support around her shoulder. Aylin stayed close enough to catch the cloth, not close enough to claim her.

"Kedra?" Aylin asked carefully.

"Still Kedra," she said. "Still do not know why."

Beneath the severed five-line conductor, something moved in a deeper hollow.

Varn lowered a lamp through the break. Its light found a bell untouched by bronze wire, iron tongue, glass tube, root fiber, or carved bone. No hammer hung beside it.

The sixth bell had never been struck.

Jiang lifted his head from Pava’s coat.

From the dark below came an adult emperor penguin’s contact call, rough with living breath.

Jiang answered with one hoarse call.

The penguin beneath Ninebell called back.
