Chapter 104: Jiang Held Her While the Road Broke

  • Next Chapter

The prisoner held the Roadwright stop signal until her fingers shook.

Valea lowered the root hammer. No one else moved.

The scarred woman pointed past her own shoulder, then struck the glass beneath her ribs. Her bent leg jerked in a deeper layer and vanished again.

Aylin wanted the rescue moving before Ninebell’s bells changed again. The woman’s shaking hand made the stronger demand. They would understand the stop before they touched another tool, even if the delay gave Gredudande more road.

"Her lower weight is not with her," Valea said. "If we pull the shoulders now, the road keeps the rest."

Aylin’s good hand stayed against the pane. "Can we bring the lower layer forward first?"

The prisoner shook her head. She pointed toward Ninebell, then dragged one finger across her throat.

Behind her, the black-green branch had reached the wet groove under Westbell’s frame. Reversing the lower layer would pull it through her body.

Valea crouched until their eyes were level. "Show me what still bears your weight."

The woman pressed her palm to the glass beside one hip.

Nemi found the matching pressure line. Ista built dry banks around it while Valea’s crew fed a weighted cord through the open shoulder layer. Tovin made the loop with his useful hand, holding one end in his teeth. Dagna wrapped the returning line around her waist because both halves of her spear were already doing work elsewhere.

Rian turned a cedar shutter edgewise and worked it beneath the exposed shoulder. Ossin jammed its corner with the blunt stump of his hook. Pell folded a dry hunter cloak over the edge and sacrificed what remained of his shirt to pad the prisoner’s neck.

"You have been very generous with my clothes," Pell told Nemi.

"You can ask the wall to return them."

"The wall and I are no longer speaking."

The prisoner’s mouth moved. A breathy sound crossed the thinning glass, almost a laugh and almost pain.

It was the first sound they had heard from her.

They tested the support before risking a pull. Dagna took tension into her legs while Tovin fed the loop through one sore hand. The prisoner flattened her palm when the rope bore her hip correctly and curled it when the shutter pinched her shoulder. Valea adjusted both weights until the signals agreed.

Valea lifted one chalked fist, then dropped it.

Dagna leaned into the guide rope. The Roadwrights raised the hip line. Orra caught the upper cord with her broken hook and held it away from the wet layer. Aylin and Rian pulled the padded shutter beneath the prisoner’s chest.

For a moment, ordinary wood and cloth carried her.

Then the road rang beneath the shutter.

The cedar split lengthwise. Pell’s shirt tore at the neck padding. The prisoner’s shoulder came forward while her hip snapped back toward Ninebell.

She made the stop signal again.

Everyone released together. Valea’s crew took the returning weight. Dagna let the rope burn across her coat rather than lock around the woman’s waist. Rian caught the broken shutter before its sharp edge reached skin.

The scarred woman sagged, gasping. No wound closed. They had moved her no farther than the width of her own hand.

They reset without reaching for Jiang’s ability. Nemi bound the split cedar with dry cloth. Rian doubled the board with a second shutter, and Ossin shifted his hook stump beneath the hip line. Valea tested the weight slowly.

The roadglass cut through the binding before the woman’s body even moved. Both shutters bent around different versions of the same shoulder. Dagna could carry the weight, but there was no single place to put it. Another ordinary lift would trade speed for a broken spine.

Jiang felt the failed lift through the floor. He also felt hunger return as a hard knot beneath his breast. The smoked fish from Flood Hall had given his body enough heat to offer, not enough to waste.

Broodguard waited without prompting him.

He did not call it.

The woman had stopped them twice. An ability with `guard` in its name did not make her body his decision.

Nemi tested the broken shutter. "We can double it with the other half."

"The next strike splits both," Valea said.

Ista touched the blood warming her sand bank. "And every failure gives the wet branch another path."

The Edric claimant’s bell tooth slipped. Brann caught his wrist before the copper left the palace note. Orra moved behind them and braced the claimant between her shoulder and the wall.

"You do not get to faint before she is out," Orra told him.

"I will arrange my collapse around your schedule."

It was the first thing he had said that sounded enough like Aylin to hurt her.

She looked down at Jiang. He met her gaze, then touched his beak to the trapped woman’s hand.

Aylin understood what he was offering. She also understood that an offered sacrifice could become another kind of pressure when the person in danger had no voice.

The trapped woman had been tied into this road by a man with Aylin’s blood and rescued by people she had never met. She had every reason to distrust another promise made over her body. Aylin refused to make Jiang’s pain sound noble enough to corner her into accepting it.

She lifted Jiang close enough for the woman to see his cracked beak, bound flipper, and webbed feet. She did not hide his injuries under the cloak.

"His name is Jiang," Aylin said. "He can share his warmth and take part of the blow while we pull you through. He cannot heal you. It will make him colder and hungrier, and everyone here will still have to carry you."

The woman’s eyes stayed on Jiang.

Aylin brought his good foot to the open edge. "If you want his protection, close your hand around his foot and hold it. If you do not, give Valea the stop signal again. We will find another way."

Jiang kept his claws relaxed.

The woman reached through the separated glass. Her fingers brushed one webbed toe, withdrew, then came back with purpose. She closed her hand around his foot and held on.

Valea watched her grip. "Willing?"

The woman tightened once, released enough to move, and gripped him again.

Then she nodded at Jiang.

Jiang met the prisoner’s eyes and chose the ability.

[Broodguard I active - warmth and impact shared]

[Cost: body heat and hunger; unavailable on release]

No light healed the woman’s torn fingers. No strength entered Aylin’s arms. Jiang simply felt another living weight arrive inside the warmth below his breast.

"Build the hold around him," Aylin said.

Pell wrapped Jiang’s body in the least torn portion of the hunter cloak, leaving his feet and lower breast exposed while keeping the bad flipper untouched inside its cradle. Rian laid the unbroken half of the shutter beneath him. Aylin supported his damaged shoulder with her forearm.

Nemi and Ista peeled the last dry glass from the prisoner’s upper body. Dagna and the Roadwrights lifted the hip line. Tovin kept the one-handed knot from slipping. Ossin drove his hook stump under the remaining glass tooth and leaned until his knees buckled.

Valea raised the root hammer.

"On the source note," she said.

Ninebell’s great Westbell sounded beyond the crack.

Valea struck the source note with both hands.

The prisoner’s shoulder came through first. Aylin and Pell turned her onto the padded shutter, setting her chest against Jiang’s feet and lower breast. Her hand never left his foot.

The road hit her before Aylin could brace.

Impact entered Jiang at the brood patch. His breast slammed into the shutter, and his bad shoulder flashed white with pain. Some of the force still threw the woman sideways. Broodguard did not erase the blow; it divided what could be divided between two willing bodies.

Orra’s hook caught the upper rope. Rian held the shutter flat. Aylin wrapped both arms around the woman’s shoulders and kept Jiang from rolling beneath her.

Nemi slapped the exposed guide line. "Her hip. Now!"

Dagna hauled. The Roadwrights answered. Tovin’s knot tightened around the moving layer while Ista threw fresh sand under every drop of blood.

The Edric claimant began to fold. Brann drove his own hand over the man’s fingers and kept the bell tooth against the wall.

The woman’s hip tore free of the next pane.

Black-green water came with it.

Ossin levered the last glass tooth upward. His hook stump slipped, cut his palm, and found the groove again. Pell kicked the wet splinter into Ista’s dry bank.

Valea struck a second source answer.

The crack in the root hammer opened through the wood.

One Roadwright saw the spreading crack. "Valea, the root is opening!"

Valea planted her feet. "Keep pulling."

Her crew knew what she was spending. They set their boots against the palace stone and gave the weighted line everything they had.

The prisoner’s bent leg came through. Dagna caught the ankle. Rian and Pell pulled the shutter backward while Aylin kept the woman’s upper body against Jiang.

Another route blow landed across their bodies.

Warmth rushed out of Jiang. The woman’s shivering eased long enough for her to keep her grip, but the cut at her elbow remained open and the scar on her face remained raw. His own cracked beak throbbed. His failed flipper stayed failed.

The last roadglass layer held her wrist.

The intact winter seal brightened blue.

Aylin reached for the brightening seal.

The route pulled first. The crowned wave and winter reeds lifted from the prisoner’s skin in a thin glass film. It peeled away with a line of blood, carrying the whole mark backward through the crack.

Valea could save her hammer or the hand.

She drove the root hammer between them.

The seal vanished toward Ninebell. The prisoner’s wrist came free.

The hammer head split from its rootwood heart.

Iron struck the floor. Pale wood burst in Valea’s hands. Both endpoint bells rang through the broken pieces, and the road lost the rhythm that had kept its layers apart.

Valea flinched as if the break had traveled through her arms. The root hammer had been the only tool in the corridor able to tell the two endpoint bells which one should answer first. With it broken, even a successful rescue would leave no clean way to close Westbell from the palace.

Valea threw the broken haft aside. "Pull her clear!"

Aylin, Pell, and Rian dragged the padded shutter clear. Dagna and the Roadwrights took the lower body. Nemi and Ista buried the wet glass behind them while Ossin kicked away the final tooth.

The prisoner fell fully into the palace corridor.

She remained against Jiang until the route stopped striking. Only then did her hand loosen from his foot.

Broodguard released when the willing grip opened.

Cold filled Jiang’s feathers from the skin outward. Hunger cramped his belly so sharply that he bit the cloak and held on until it passed. Nothing in him had healed. The woman above him still bled, but she breathed on her own.

Aylin and the woman with her face lay side by side for one stunned moment, separate bodies on the same broken shutter.

Aylin wanted to ask her name, where she had come from, and why she knew a Roadwright’s signal. The questions could wait. She put two fingers to the woman’s throat and counted a living pulse that belonged to neither seal nor road.

Valea knelt over the pieces of her root hammer.

Beyond the open road, one guild bell began Aylin’s funeral call.

A second answered in a different metal.

Then every tower in Ninebell joined them.
