Chapter Two Hundred and Twenty-Two

Asli dropped to her knees.

"No," she whispered. Blood covered the floor.

The old man’s eyes had already gone still but she grabbed his shoulders anyway.

"Wake up." Her voice came out rough.

"Wake up!" She shook him harder. His head lolled uselessly.

"You don’t get to do that." She gave him another shake. "You don’t get to say something like that and die."

Her breathing grew uneven. "Wake up!" Her voice cracked.

"What were you going to say about Ahmet?"

Blood only dripped from his mouth.

"What is Ahmet? Who is he supposed to be to me? Tell me!"

Her fingers dug into his coat, searching... as if she could find the answers there.

"Talk!" she yelled, but still nothing came from him.

"What were you about to say?"

Her eyes widened.

"What is Ahmet to me?"

The repeated questions sounded ridiculous even to her own ears.

On record, he was her enemy. That was all. He was the son of the man who murdered her father. The man she had been raised to hate. The man she had shot.

They didn’t know he was the father of her child. The idiot who had somehow forced his way into her life. The man who cared for her.

The man she...

All the while, she had tuned out the sounds of shooting around her.

Bang!

The sound exploded through the room, yet she didn’t seem to have heard it. Another bullet struck the wall above her head. But she barely reacted. Her mind was elsewhere.

On Ahmet.

On her parents.

On the doctor’s last words.

On a thousand impossible questions.

Bang!

Another shot.

Then shouting came, "Asli!" The voice sounded distant.

"Asli!" It sounded urgent now and she blinked, focusing on the owner of the voice.

Daniel.

He stood near the doorway, firing without pause. The men dropped one after the other. She scanned her surroundings and noticed a few were already lying on the ground.

"Leave!" His voice thundered. "All men on site are heading towards this sect. Leave before the others get here!"

Bang!

Another body hit the ground.

"Asli!"

But she couldn’t move, her mind was still fixed on the doctor and the words he didn’t finish

’Ahmet is your...’ What could he know about Ahmet that he needed to say after mentioning her parents being alive?

"They are alive and very powerful."

Her stomach twisted.

"No..." A sick idea crossed her mind.

"Asli!" Daniel only cursed.

A bullet shattered the mirror behind him.

"Move!"

He fired again.

"Move, damn it!"

Still, she sat there.

Then another figure burst through the door, his strong arms wrapped around her.

"What..." She found herself thrown over someone’s shoulder. It was when her instinct kicked in, finding her gun.

"Asli!"

Her gun nearly slipped from her hand.

"Put me down!" she protested.

The voice ignored her.

More gunshots erupted behind them.

Daniel’s voice followed them. "GO!"

Another burst of bullets echoed behind them.

Then the night air hit her face. Her feet touched the ground only long enough to be shoved into the back seat of her car.

"What are you doing?"

The driver didn’t answer immediately. He sped away.

She could still hear bullets echoing in the distance. Was she running away from a shootout? She thought as her eyes widened.

"Turn the fck around!" she commanded but he didn’t flinch even for a second. "My car..."

"It’ll be brought later, boss."

She froze when she realized she was really being sent away.

Her mind drifted to Daniel. He had saved her. She now owed him her life. The man had a death wish already and she knew what his mission now was.

Everything was messy now. She had never imagined herself entangled in something like this.

Slowly, reality began creeping back into her mind. She had gone there to kill the doctor, not to wish he were alive.

Asli finally dragged her attention away from the blood staining her hands and looked at the man behind the wheel.

Something about him nagged at her. He looked familiar, though not enough to know his name or enough to know where exactly she had seen him.

Which only made her more suspicious. By now, her disappearance would have spread through the Villa like wildfire. Every sect leader, assassin, servant, and Mafia must’ve heard it by now.

Everyone would know. Yet here he was, driving her away from danger instead of dragging her back to Marco.

Her eyes narrowed. "Who are you?" Her voice came out rougher just as she intended.

The man glanced at her through the rearview mirror. "Philip, boss."

"What sect?" The question hung in the air.

For a moment, she had thought he didn’t hear her. Then... "I was planted here."

Asli’s eyes sharpened. "Who?"

Philip shook his head. "Boss Markus did."

That got her attention. If Markus planted him there, why was he with Daniel?

"Boss Ahmet’s men are still back there helping Daniel."

Back there.

The words made her blink.

She didn’t know there were five other men fighting along with Daniel and Philip. She hadn’t even registered their presence.

Her entire mind had been trapped inside that room. Right now, she didn’t have time to think about why Markus and Ahmet’s men would help Daniel. Maybe it was because Daniel was helping her.

Her mind was fixed on the doctor and his unfinished sentence.

Who had killed him? The thought hit her again.

She hadn’t sensed any threat when she first entered. She hadn’t heard anyone walk in either.

Which meant whoever pulled that trigger had already been on standby, and very close.

This could mean it was his own people. His own sect guards. She remembered clearly that he had six guards. As to why her father would deploy five extra men to the doctor’s side, only made sense to her now.

The thought won’t stop gnawing at her no matter how much she tried to push it down, ’If my parents are alive and powerful. If Ahmet one way or the other knows them, they must be in his Villa.’

"Turn the car around." Her voice was barely above a whisper.

Philip kept driving, ignoring her order.

"I’ll give you one minute." The softness in her tone was far more dangerous than a threat.

Philip immediately went still and knew he didn’t need a second warning.

The steering wheel turned sharply beneath his hands as the vehicle changed direction.

Asli stared ahead. Her pulse hammered against her ribs.

"Take me to Ahmet’s Villa."

Philip’s hands tightened around the wheel.

For the briefest moment, something flashed across his face. Fear. Then it disappeared just as quickly. "Yes, boss."
