Chapter 1292: Chapter 1292: Aurelia Shaw and the First Lady in Trouble!
She didn’t understand what they were discussing, and even if she did, they would never let her in on something this confidential.
So Aurelia tactfully stayed out of the way.
Seeing her come down, Ava Thompson, who had been waiting downstairs for a long time, ran over and said with a smile, "Aurelia, let’s go to the base?"
"The base?" Aurelia froze for a second.
"Yeah." Ava said, "Grayson Quinn happens to have business at the base, so I asked him to take us along for a look. We’ll just sit in the car and look around, we won’t touch anything. It’s fine. Do you want to go?"
"Yes!" Aurelia replied without even thinking.
The base... she’d wanted to see it for a long time, the place Mason Nightshade grew up... Come to think of it, she knew very little about Mason’s childhood. All she knew was that Sophie Nye treated him horribly; if it hadn’t been for Grandfather, it was hard to say whether Mason would have even survived his early years.
She really wished she could go back and see him as a child, see just how heartbreaking he’d been.
They got into the car heading to the base, and the vehicle quickly drove into the main military camp. Through the glass, Aurelia saw well-trained soldiers standing ramrod straight; a solemn, serious atmosphere quietly seeped into everyone.
"You two stay in the car and wait for me. I’ll come back as soon as I’m done. You absolutely cannot get out, you can only look from inside the car. Did you hear me?" Once the car stopped, Grayson Quinn got out, then turned back anxiously to warn Aurelia and Ava.
"Mm! Got it." Ava said.
Aurelia nodded, giving a soft "Mm."
Grayson actually wasn’t worried about Aurelia. She’d always been self-disciplined; even if she sometimes disobeyed, she’d never cause trouble for him. It was the First Lady he worried about. The President kept her sheltered in an Ivory Tower, so pure it was actually unsettling.
Still, with Aurelia here to keep her company, nothing major should happen.
If the First Lady hadn’t been pestering him nonstop to come see the base, he really would’ve refused. And worried as he was that something might happen to the President’s precious wife and he’d be the one to take the fall, he certainly wouldn’t have brought Mason’s beloved treasure here.
The soldier in the duty room heard something over his headset, and his face instantly turned grave. He suddenly stood up and ran out in big, urgent strides, like he was rushing to report something.
From inside the car, Aurelia saw soldiers running back and forth in a panic. The ones who’d been standing so straight just moments ago were suddenly ordered to disperse; their expressions were stern, and Aurelia noticed they all had guns slung over their shoulders now, as if they were about to face some imminent danger.
"Aurelia, did something happen?" Even slow-on-the-uptake Ava sensed that something was off.
Aurelia leaned forward—and then she saw a blazing streak of red hurtling toward them. Her face changed sharply, and she grabbed Ava’s wrist, flipping them both out of the car in one smooth motion!
An explosion ripped through the air behind them.
Ava was so terrified she went blank, shaking uncontrollably in Aurelia’s arms. She’d never lived through something like this before; her face had gone white as a sheet, her fingers clutching Aurelia’s clothes in a death grip. "Au... Aurelia, was that... a bomb just now?"
"A missile. The camp must have come under surprise attack." Aurelia said. She glanced at Ava and saw that, though her face was pale and her whole body trembling with fear, she wasn’t crying or screaming, let alone collapsing in despair. Aurelia’s impression of this simple girl shifted a little.
She was still the First Lady, after all. Following Adrian Cooper around, she’d surely seen her share of this sort of thing, enough not to be scared into hysterics.
"Can you walk?" Aurelia pulled Ava up. Seeing Ava nod, she relaxed a bit and looked off into the distance—the soldiers in the camp were already on high alert, shifting into combat formation. They probably hadn’t expected the enemy to go straight to missiles as their opening move.
