Chapter 183 - A Euphemistic Warning
'Bold of her to use 'our' when even I have never dared to call this mansion mine.' Butler Limo's eyes narrowed dangerously as he stood before her.
Paula had to look up as the Butler was taller than her which made her neck hurt after a few seconds.
This maid of the Madam of the mansion was taller than most of the other women in the house hence she had always looked down at people while she spoke to them.
She was so used to looking down at people both literally and figuratively that now she felt a shooting pain in her neck when she looked up to meet the Butler's eyes.
"This mansion belongs to our Masters." He reminded the woman who seemed to have forgotten that she was but a mere maid to the Madam of this mansion.
Without Raylene's backing and constant support, she would not have a chance to stand at the forefront and be one of the important servants in this household.
However, it appeared as though she was taking that support for granted and her sights were getting higher than what they should be.
Butler Limo had been serving this household and the people of the St. Claire's family from the Earl's younger days but he had never seen such a complacent and haughty servant survive for so long in this mansion.
He had been put in charge of the management of the servants and any such maid or male servant would be dismissed once proven guilty of their bad behavior.
Unfortunately, he could not do the same as this woman was the only servant who had followed his Madam from her maiden family.
The familiarity and the closeness that she shared with this maid was the only reason why she could behave in such a reckless manner.
'But Madam has been stringent with her punishment these days so there might be hope of tossing this woman out of the mansion sometime in the future.' He was glad that there was a silver lining to the dark cloud that loomed over them.
While Butler Limo was thanking the gods for listening to his prayer of kicking this maid out of the mansion in the near future, the maid was glaring at him.
"I know who this mansion belongs to, to the Lord." She scowled right back at the man who was mocking her.
"All I asked was why that creature was here!" She glared at him as though he was the one who had wronged her.
Paula's eyes which had been narrowed paused when she saw the anger flash through his eyes.
She had been arrogant in her actions until now because she believed that no one could touch her as long as she had the Madam's support.
However, these past two weeks that she had spent in the Lower Hall after accepting her punishment proved that she had no one to take her side and stand up for her.
'I am all alone hereā¦ I need to take care of my own wellbeing and ensure that I have a safe and wealthy future.' She determined and the urgency she felt in her heart increased by leaps and bounds.
Butler Limo stood right before her with his eyes boring holes into her as he uttered his next words.
"That is Young Miss Yvonne's new pet. One more word against him and I will personally make sure that you spend another two weeks in the Lower Hall." He threatened the woman without trying to conceal his hostility.
He had grown attached to the etcher and to hear such words against him was pricking the Butler's ears.
Paula was stunned to hear about the horse and gulped in fear as she knew that the Butler did not lie to her in this regard.
'That child has all of the Lord's love. I should curry favor with her and not anger her.' She surmised and gave the old man a nod of admittance.
She did not want to spend another second in the Lower Hall much less two whole weeks.
Just the thought of the place made her knees buckle but she had managed to steady herself.
Butler Limo had said his piece therefore he no longer wished to waste his time with this woman.
'Mrs. Jacinth must have served Madam and Young Miss the refreshments but I should take a look at it once again.' He decided and then turned around.
However, before he could take a step forward, he halted and then turned around once again.
"A servant should keep their eyes down and never dare to look at their master." He warned euphemistically and was sure that she had gotten the message that he was trying to send across to her.
Paula felt as though she was struck by lightning as she stood frozen in place and could only watch the man walk away from her with his back straight as a rod.
The old age had not dulled his senses, in fact, he was sharper than ever and had not missed the changes in her demeanor whenever their master was around.
'He is the biggest thorn in my path.' Paula gritted her teeth as she clenched the dark maid's uniform that she had worn today.
Paula's intentions had been uncovered yet she did not feel embarrassed or ashamed, all she felt was the need to move ahead with her plans that she had been making during her punishment time.
She did not care that what she was thinking about was unethical and wrong, all she cared about was that she wished to live a carefree and leisure life just like the one her Mistress lived each day.
As Butler Limo left the woman outside and entered the mansion, he found three maids scurrying with trays in their hands in the direction of the parlor.
'I can always depend on Mrs. Jacinth.' He sighed as a wave of relief washed over him now that he was sure their Masters were being served properly.
Thinking of his Master, Butler Limo's eyes darkened when he remembered the greedy eyes of the maid which had been aimed at him.
'I hope she stops whatever nonsense that is going on in her head.' He scoffed as the relief was now taken over by disgust.
He had always had his doubts regarding her motives but today he had gotten his evidence that all of his thoughts weren't figments of his imagination.
'She sure is bold for having such a big appetite.' He sneered at the shameless woman who was aiming for something that was out of her reach.
Not willing to wreck his pleasant mood by thinking about the greedy and ungrateful maid, he decided to head in the direction of the parlor to do his duty of watching guards at the door.
Once he reached the parlor, he noticed that the three maids he had seen earlier had just walked out of the door which was being held open by Mrs. Jacinth.
The old maid bowed in respect to the Butler as she closed the door after the three maids who went away to finish their other chores.
This left the maid and the Butler who stood on either side of the door as they waited for their Masters who were resting inside the room.
