Chapter 173 - Was I Conned!?
Glennise and Rika gazed at Yvonne as though she was a war hero who had just won the longest raging war that had devastated the KIngdom.
The sole hope and saving grace of the Kingdom had returned victorious and now the peasants were looking up at him with sparkling eyes.
This was how Yvonne would describe the worshipping gazes that she was looking at right now.
'All I did was try to avoid conflict with the Villainess and opt for a different dessert!' She was close to flipping out when she saw that they could not take their eyes off of her face.
The pins and needles that she felt that she had been seated on vanished when the server had come back with the treats that they had ordered.
Now it was Yvonne's turn to gaze at the two girls with her eyes wide open and lips parted.
This was due to the two beautiful desserts that had been placed before them.
Rika's blueberry pie was glistening at the top with the perfect shine on it and the aroma that assaulted Yvonne's nose made her take a deep breath in to enjoy the sweet scent from the pie.
Without waiting on ceremony, Rika stabbed her pie with the fork and began eating it in small portions.
Gulping her saliva, the little girl turned her eyes to the dessert that she had set her eyes on but was now being consumed by someone else.
The chunks of strawberry looked fresh as though they had just been plucked from the garden.
Cream which looked like fluffy clouds and the soft white cake between each layer of cream and strawberries was making it hard for her to take her eyes away from it.
'You have your cupcake, Vonny!' She chided her greedy eyes and then looked down at the plate placed before her.
The little excitement that she had for her dessert soon evaporated when she saw the monstrosity that was placed in her place.
'You call this a cupcake!?' She growled in her heart as she turned the plate around to take a better look at the piece of cake on her plate.
Rika had finished half her pie by the time Yvonne had only kept watching the sweet dish on her plate.
"Miss Yvonne is a brave one for choosing this. To think that you would choose something that no one buys from this store." She muttered into her ear and pointed at the plate with her chin.
Yvonne followed her gaze and her line of sight landed on the 'cupcake' on her plate.
'Was I conned!?' Her milk teeth gritted against each other as she stared at the object on her plate.
What the server had called a cupcake and brought it out for her was none other than a bland cupcake with no cream or icing whatsoever.
'No matter how I look at it… This is a bloody muffin!!' The seething anger in her heart did not vanish after hearing the high praise coming from Rika's mouth.
Her eyes alternated between the strawberry shortcake and then the bland MUFFIN placed before her.
The regret in her heart for having offered the strawberry delight in exchange for this tasteless raised flour was indescribable.
The other girls had gone back to eating their treats and none of them had bothered with the unwilling expression on her face.
"Mister Server!" Yvonne called out in a loud voice, startling the greedy girls who had been focusing on their snacks until now.
The server was quick to return to their table and when he noticed the untouched cupcake on her plate, he gave her a sympathetic and knowing nod.
'I was wondering when she would complain about the cupcake just like the others.' He sighed at this failed attempt made by the baker.
The baker was the Master's favorite servant and was given the complete responsibility to think of new and exciting treats to increase the sales of the store.
He had been doing a great job however, this failed dessert, the cupcake that he had chanced upon during one of his trips to a neighboring land was what he desired with all his heart to perfect.
This was why, no matter how many times the patrons had sent the cupcakes back with hoards of complaints, he would not cease baking them in hopes of someone liking it someday.
'Today might also not be your lucky day.' He shook his head in defeat and then glanced at the little girl who had called him.
"May I speak to the person who has made this?" She requested in a soft-spoken manner that she was taught to behave when in public by her etiquette tutor.
The baker was tired today as he had just finished baking a huge amount of treats for the patron who had given them an important order.
When Glennise heard her request, she could understand what was going through her mind.
'She wished to complain about the abomination that was served.' She nodded but did not bother as she soon went back to finishing the cake on her plate.
As she chewed on the fresh strawberries, she forgot about the sacrifice that Yvonne had made so that she might enjoy the dessert that she had eaten within minutes.
The server did not want to offend the child from one of the wealthiest families any further and hence he hurried to inform the baker that his presence was needed.
Soon a scrawny looking man in a chef's hat and white apron stood before Yvonne's table.
The arrival of the new person attracted Raylene's attention as she fixed her gaze at the table where her daughter sat.
She was ready to intervene if something were to come up but did not make any movement until she was sure that there was something wrong there.
The baker had just taken a nap in the back room meant for the servants of the cafe when he was asked to come outside.
Though he was groggy and irritated at being awakened from his nap, his drowsiness had flown away when he heard that someone had asked for him in regard to the cupcake that he had made.
'Another apology…' He sighed as he walked towards the table with his shoulders slumped.
He had done this several times and thus he had no trouble in following the flow this time as well.
"I apologize, young miss for the trouble that you had to face due to something that I have made. Please allow our store to compensate you with a new dessert I will make right this moment." He repeated the words that he had been taught by his Master.
Yvonne was impressed with his rote memory but was not so impressed with the lack of sincerity he had shown in his apology.
Crossing her arms across her chest, she raised her brows and smirked at him before mentioning why she had called him out here.
"Would you like to know how you can improve… This?" She inquired as she pointed her chin at the plain vanilla piece of cake that was left untouched on her plate.
The baker was waiting to hear childish tantrums to the treat that he had baked but instead he heard something that had made his heart thump in his chest.
Yvonne giggled as she was sure that she had managed to gain his interest thanks to the wide eyes and fervent nod that she was graced with.
