Chapter 156 - You See, Vonna...
Marquess Samed glowered at the child who was making him feel worse than what he already was.
Even Rutherford grimaced when he heard her words and then gave her an awkward shake of the head.
The young child was trying to decipher what had gone wrong when she heard Marquess Samed's frustrated voice mumbling as he tugged at his hair once again.
"Even he has an etcher but I do not!" He lamented his ill fate with a pained groan.
He had just started to feel better after hearing Yvonne's generous words in his favor but soon that feeling drifted far away when she had mentioned her father's name.
The revelation that just struck her like lightning made her whiplash in her father's direction.
"Papa has an etcher!?" She interrogated incredulously with her eyes opened wide and almost popping out of her sockets.
'Who? When? Where? Why did I not know anything about this!?' A plethora of questions had materialized in her mind.
Questions that she was waiting for her father to answer as she turned towards him with the same inquisitive look that he had found cute previously.
Having been left with no other options, Rutherford scratched the back of his neck while letting out an awkward chuckle.
"Vonna, you see…" He muttered while avoiding her searching eyes.
This daughter of his was curious beyond measure and now that she was aware of the etcher's existence, he was sure that she would not let him off the hook unless and until she was filled in on all the details.
"What does Vonna see, Papa?" Yvonne tilted her head and smiled at the man who continued to scratch his neck.
The smile looked eerie enough to make both the men gulp down their saliva in apprehension of what she might say next.
Even Marquess Samed had momentarily forgotten all about his worries as he felt pity for the Earl who was at the center of this piercing glance.
'He has an etcher and I had no knowledge about it?' She was bewildered as she tried to figure things out.
Neither had she seen any such formidable animals like her Demon nor had she heard from any of the servants about the existence of such a beast.
This made her strengthen the convictions she had about never hearing about the etcher that Rutherford had mentioned he owned.
'Those horses in the stable did not look good enough to be etchers so what could it be?' She debated on what the breed of the etcher was.
She had only seen Demon and Precious, these two etchers in her short-lived life so her first thought was that even Rutherford had a horse for an etcher.
However, the horses she had observed in the stable were all subpar when compared to the two etchers she had met which heightened her confusion.
Rutherford sighed once he came to the conclusion of revealing the truth to his little girl.
"Fryght" He muttered in a soft voice as he looked at Yvonne.
'Heh? Did he just say something in Danish?' She furrowed her brows when she realized what he had just said.
The little girl who had grown up in Europe had a knowledge of most of the languages spoken there.
The word that Rutherford had uttered was roughly translated as 'fear' in English.
While she was pondering on why her father had said that, the door to the parlor was pushed open.
Rutherford glimpsed at the door and then back at his child.
Yvonne had noticed the door being pushed open and when she returned in its direction she found that no one had entered the room.
'Was it the wind?' She speculated and then rejected that idea when she noticed how sturdy and heavy the doors of this mansion were.
This could only mean that someone had pushed the door in order to enter the room but until now no one had stepped inside and the doors had shut once again.
"Good boy." Rutherford's words brought her back to her senses as she turned towards him.
Yvonne's eyes widened in surprise at what she saw at the feet of her father.
Down by his feet sat a little pup with his head rubbing against the calf of the big man.
Yvonne and Sullivan shared a glance and both shook their heads at the same time indicating that they had not noticed when this pup came inside without their knowledge.
Rutherford reached down and carried the little pup with silver and black fur in his palm as he held it before him, displaying the tiny beast that had appeared out of nowhere.
"Meet Fryght, my etcher." He introduced the small pup in his hand who was being held by the scruff.
Yvonne's eyes remained on the puppy which was struggling as it kicked the air with its little feet, trying to escape the big man's hold.
Upon hearing the introduction, Marquess Samed narrowed his eyes as he watched Rutherford with skepticism apparent in his eyes.
However, this was not caught by Yvonne as she was trying her best to not pounce on the cute little puppy in her father's hand.
Since a young age, Yvonne St. Claire had an affection for cute little animals until she was molded by her grandfather to not care for such trivial beings.
But she was in a new world and living a new life where she could express her affections for such adorable little beings which could easily melt her heart.
Unfortunately, Rutherford pulled Fryght away when he noticed that Yvonne was about to reach out to pet him.
He knew exactly what kind of a pet this little troublemaker was and therefore something had to be done before the child could touch him.
"Behave, or else…" He spat out after he turned the pup to look straight into his eyes.
Yvonne's pout at being denied the chance to touch the smooth fur of the little pup turned to a cute giggle when she heard the low whimper from the petite beast.
'Maybe, even he does not like other people touching him.' She inferred after taking in the view of his stubborn behavior.
The vicious glint in the pup's eyes which Yvonne had failed to notice faded away after it heard its master's words.
As though he had understood the command given to him, he stopped struggling and gave Rutherford a meek nod.
Following which, the doting father did not wait for a second more before he rose from the seat with his etcher in his hand.
Yvonne smiled at her father and then at the pup in his hands as they took the seat next to hers.
"Here." He handed the etcher over to her while keeping his stern gazed fixed at the little beast to ensure that he did not harm his baby girl in any way.
Under the fierce gaze of his master, Fryght, the etcher stayed docile as Yvonne placed him on her lap.
The soft fur and the warm body of the etcher made Yvonne unable to resist herself as she stroked his body to her heart's content.
'It is funny how fate works.' She giggled while scratching the chin of the little creature in the arms.
While a little girl like her had been fated to have a huge horse like Demon as her etcher, her father who was of a huge build was fated with this cute and petite pup as his etcher.
Yvonne found this contrast to be funny as she shook her head at the strange world that Blue Bird had made.
