“New injuries,” Jiang Jing said, “If you talk about old injuries, there are some calluses from work, but no obvious scars.”

“Jing’er, thank you for making the trip,” Su Yaoguang said, holding Jiang Jing’s hand.

“Why are you being so polite with me? I’ll complain to our foster mother,” Jiang Jing said, giving the medicine box a shake. “Since there’s nothing else, I’ll head back first.”

“Alright, I’ll have someone escort you home.”

After Jiang Jing left, Su Yaoguang held Zhou Wangshu’s arm and whispered something in his ear.

Zhou Wangshu frowned, “You want to keep her?”

“She’s so pitiful!” Su Yaoguang said, “If I ignore her plight, how could I be considered human? If word got out that the Cheng’an Hou Mansion mistreated a distant relative to this extent, and no one in the entire mansion spoke up for her, wouldn’t we also be scolded? She’s so pitiful; we should at least give her a way to survive.”

Zhou Wangshu furrowed his brow, “As long as it makes you happy.”

After all, he would take responsibility.

Zhou Wangshu kissed her cheek, “After taking care of others’ affairs, shouldn’t you take care of your husband?”

Su Yaoguang hugged his slim waist, leaning against his chest, “Tell me, my husband, what do you want? Even if it’s the stars in the sky, I’ll get them for you.”

Zhou Wangshu let out a cold snort, “Sweet words come easily to you. It’s a good thing I married you, or who knows how many innocent foolish men out there you’d bewitch.”

The next day, when Su Yaoguang woke up, she heard voices outside.

She opened the door and saw Tong Qianbi standing outside with the help of a maid. Seeing her come out, Tong Qianbi hurriedly knelt down.

“What are you doing?”

“Cousin-in-law, your great kindness and virtue, Qianbi doesn’t know how to repay. Qianbi is willing to serve you as a cow or horse; I hope you won’t despise me.”

Su Yaoguang looked at Tong Qianbi’s unsteady figure and frowned, “Even if you want to serve, you should first take care of your health. Go back and rest for now; we’ll talk once you’re well.”

“But, Auntie there…”

“I’ll speak with her later.”

“Thank you, cousin-in-law.”

The maid supported Tong Qianbi as they left.

Zhou Wangshu hugged her slender waist from behind and said in her ear, “I have social obligations tonight and might be back late. Why don’t you stay at the General Mansion tonight?”

Su Yaoguang understood Zhou Wangshu’s meaning but had her own thoughts.

“I’ll wait for you at home.”

“Yaoguang…” Zhou Wangshu looked at her disapprovingly.

“Oh, I know what I’m doing.” Su Yaoguang nudged him, “You better get going, or you’ll be late.”

After breakfast, Su Yaoguang went to the Marchioness Cheng’an, saying she found Tong Qianbi pleasing and planned to keep her by her side for work.

The Marchioness Cheng’an said displeased, “Our Zhen’er rarely finds someone who knows how to serve, and you took her away. What about our Zhen’er? Why don’t you send a couple of people to serve Zhen’er?”

“The Second Young Master’s health is so good that there’s no need for servants to attend,” Su Yaoguang said. “Here’s fifty taels, enough for the Second Young Master to buy a few strong lads.”

The Marchioness Cheng’an said coldly, “Fifty taels? Are you trying to shoo beggars away?”

“The Marchioness is right. We’re family, no need for formalities. Giving silver is too impersonal.” Su Yaoguang took back the silver. “I’ve delivered the message, so I’ll take my leave.”

The Marchioness Cheng’an glared at Su Yaoguang’s departing figure.

From behind came the sound of the Marchioness Cheng’an smashing things, “That’s my distant niece; I just started using her, and she’s taken away. This mansion hasn’t fallen into their hands yet, and she already acts like she runs it, is she not giving this mother-in-law any respect?”

Su Yaoguang listened to the commotion behind.

The maid beside her said, “It’s unfortunate for the cousin-in-law to have such an aunt. From what I see, it would be better to marry that old man in his fifties as a concubine; at least she could survive. If it weren’t for the young madam’s kindness, given how the Second Young Master tormented the cousin-in-law, she wouldn’t last half a month.”

“This cousin-in-law truly is a pitiful person, no wonder you feel sorry for her,” Su Yaoguang said.

“Doesn’t the young madam sympathize with her?” the maid asked, puzzled.

“I do too, which is why I helped her. Otherwise, I wouldn’t meddle in the main courtyard’s affairs!” Su Yaoguang said, “Have people keep an eye on her and take good care of her.”

As Su Yaoguang passed by the side room, she heard the conversation between Tong Qianbi and the maid inside.

“Miss, the young madam has already gone to the main courtyard; you no longer have to endure the suffering.”
