Her brother-in-law was indeed very efficient. In no time, he returned Du Heng's call, reassuring him not to worry about Wu Shengnan. Apparently, she was just at the Department reviewing files and organizing things, and was not in any danger.

By the way, her brother-in-law also reported back to Du Heng about helping Liao Quansheng: the matter was perfectly resolved.

As for how it was resolved, her brother-in-law didn't say. He only mentioned that Liao Quansheng could manage his business with peace of mind in the future, doing things exactly as he wished.

After hanging up, Du Heng's mood didn't improve.

First of all, he wasn't worried about Wu Shengnan's safety. After all, she was heavily pregnant. No matter how special her job was, they wouldn't assign her to fieldwork; besides, work at the Department rarely involved going out on assignments. Most likely, she was doing behind-the-scenes work.

Behind-the-scenes work might not be dangerous, but it was exhausting. Especially sifting through a sea of materials, trying to find useful clues in densely worded files—that was hardly an easy job. If time constraints were added to that, it was enough to make one's eyes pop.

But since her brother-in-law said everything was fine, he couldn't very well press further.

Then there was the matter with Liao Quansheng. Her brother-in-law had only said it was resolved, not how, which made Du Heng both curious and worried.

Left with no choice, Du Heng had to call Liao Quansheng himself. "Liao, has the issue been resolved?"

"Well, I was just thinking of calling you tomorrow after I finish up the procedures." Liao Quansheng's voice over the phone was much lighter than before. "Yes, the issue is sorted. I just have a few more procedures to complete tomorrow, and then everything will be completely fine."

"Tell me what happened. My brother-in-law didn't do anything rash, did he?" His brother-in-law was usually reliable. However, as a third-generation scion, it didn't seem entirely out of the question for him to use some heavy-handed tactics.

Liao Quansheng's cheerful laughter came through the phone. "How could that be? Your brother-in-law is quite somebody. Frankly, I don't know the specifics either. It's just that those shareholders approached me a few days ago. They said they would no longer participate in the company's management, only collect dividends, and they also wanted to transfer all their shares to me to hold in proxy. Throughout the entire process, their attitude was so good, so incredibly good, that I could hardly believe it."

Great, asking was the same as not asking.

Du Heng didn't want to chat anymore, so after exchanging a few pleasantries, he hung up.

Now, he just wanted to wait for Wu Shengnan's call.

At nine o'clock that evening, Wu Shengnan's call came, right on schedule. But she had called her sister-in-law, Zhang Sumei, first, and then Du Heng, which made him a little jealous.

"Oh, come on, you. It's just that I was afraid you'd worry and not let me come to work." Wu Shengnan knew Du Heng inside out. Hearing the unusual tone in his voice, she quickly apologized. She had Du Heng's preference for gentle persuasion over firm opposition down pat. "Don't worry about me," she said softly. "I'm just reviewing some case files and looking up some materials. Because time is tight, I'll stay in the Department's dormitory for these few days. That way, I avoid the daily commute, which not only wastes time but is also exhausting."

Du Heng had a bellyful of things to say, but Wu Shengnan's gentle words disarmed him. Powerless yet deeply concerned, he could only say, "Forget it, I won't lecture you. You're too headstrong; I know you wouldn't listen to me anyway. Just make sure you get enough rest, and call me immediately if anything comes up. You're far along in your pregnancy now. Prolonged fatigue isn't good for you or the child."

Whatever Du Heng said, Wu Shengnan readily agreed to everything. "The job will be finished in three more days, and then I'll come back. Plus, I've already arranged for leave from the School. After I get back, I'll just rest and wait for the baby. I won't go out anymore. That should put your mind at ease, right?"

After hanging up, Du Heng lay back on the bed, feeling helpless.

He understood Wu Shengnan's personality well. She was fiery, deeply principled, and always tremendously enthusiastic about her job. Although she had mellowed considerably, old habits die hard. Moreover, the cases handled by the Department were certain to ignite her sense of justice even more. So Du Heng knew it was pointless to try and persuade her further, and he didn't.

He calculated the time: there were still thirty-three days until her due date. Her returning in three days to rest and prepare for childbirth was acceptable. Moreover, some light exercise before labor was generally beneficial for expectant mothers. The crucial thing was not to overdo it and get too tired; that needed careful attention.

Lying on the bed, Du Heng's thoughts began to drift, and he started to imagine scenes after the child was born. As he thought about it, he drifted off to sleep. Even in his dreams, a smile played on his lips.

He was ready to be a father.

In the middle of the night, while he was sound asleep, the phone beside his pillow rang.

Du Heng jolted awake and grabbed his mobile phone without looking. There were many hospitalized patients, so emergencies were frequent. His mobile phone was basically on twenty-four hours a day.

"Du Heng speaking."

"Honey, I think I'm going into labor!"

Huh?

Du Heng froze.
