Thirty Days to Hoard: Reborn into the Frost
Chapter 98: Danger
Chapter 98 -97: Danger
However, Yao Ye guaranteed that these happy days wouldn’t last much longer!
From the day of its founding, the goal of his organization—DoD, the Dragon of Destruction—had been to annihilate all humanity on Earth! Only by wiping out the human race could they seize the planet’s resources.
Unfortunately, this apocalyptic snowstorm had only eliminated two-thirds of the global population. Instead of stripping away humanity’s will to live, the blizzard had united them further. Not only had they rebuilt refuge bases, but they even planned on post-disaster reconstruction.
Yao Ye sneered as he thought, “Stupid humans.”
His current mission was to locate the main power switch of the Han City Base and plant a bomb there. That way, with a simple press of the remote detonator, the newly operational Han City Base would plunge into total darkness. Power and water would be cut, heating systems would fail, and this warm refuge would completely transform into a massive ice cellar.
“Mr. Yao, right?”
A man sneaked in and sat across from Yao Ye. He wore a black hat with a long brim that concealed his face.
Yao Ye quietly observed the man opposite him. He was thin, with drooping eyes that gave his entire demeanor a bitter, weathered appearance.
“Zhang Yishan?” Yao Ye said coldly.
Zhang Yishan removed his hat and nodded, his drooping eyes seemingly etched with the hardships of life.
“I’ve brought the circuit blueprints for the Han City Base. You know, if life hadn’t forced my hand, I wouldn’t be willing to do this. I was the head of circuit design when the base was constructed. I’ll give you the blueprints, but as agreed, you must give me ten million base credits.”
A dangerous smile surfaced on Yao Ye’s lips. “Rest assured, when has the DoD ever broken a promise? One million base credits have already been paid to you upfront. As long as you hand over the blueprints, the rest of the money will be paid to you very soon.”
Zhang Yishan nodded. “Alright, then. I believe you. I also trust your organization’s financial strength.”
Saying that, Zhang Yishan reached into his pocket, fumbling for the hidden blueprints.
BANG!
A gunshot rang out. A bullet flew from out of nowhere and abruptly pierced right through Zhang Yishan’s head. Blood and brain matter burst from his skull, staining the window next to their dining table red.
The cafeteria instantly descended into chaos. “Murder! Someone’s dead!”
An urgent warning sounded in Yao Ye’s earpiece, “Evacuate immediately! Your position has been exposed. Please evacuate immediately!”
On his arm, the black dragon tattoo flashed with a red warning light.
“Damn it, looks like someone is secretly guarding the base!” Yao Ye spat out a curse, swiftly got up, wrapped his coat tightly around himself, and left the cafeteria under the cover of the chaos.
Half an hour later.
The cafeteria was now completely empty of diners, and most of the food windows had closed early.
Gu Rongjin and Liu Hui Chun stood a short distance away from the deceased. Liu Hui Chun spoke with a grave expression, “Base Chief, the victim is Zhang Yishan, the head of circuit design for the Han City Base.”
Gu Rongjin calmly walked over and pulled out a draft of the Han City Base’s circuit blueprints from Zhang Yishan’s pocket. It was obvious that Zhang Yishan had been in the middle of a transaction right before his death. This blueprint was crucial to the Han City Base; if it fell into the wrong hands, the consequences would be unimaginable.
All the directors involved in the base’s construction had signed non-disclosure agreements. For Zhang Yishan to break his agreement to trade the base’s blueprints meant he was utterly blinded by greed. His death was well deserved.
Liu Hui Chun asked in a low voice, “Base Chief, should we report this incident up the chain of command?”
“He’s just a traitor. There’s no need to make a fuss,” Gu Rongjin replied coldly. “Clean up the body. The cafeteria will operate as usual tomorrow.”
Liu Hui Chun nodded. “Understood.”
Security personnel quickly covered Zhang Yishan’s corpse with a white sheet and carried it out. The bloodstains left on the dining table and window glass were also swiftly scrubbed away.
Gu Rongjin slid a hand into his pocket, discreetly tracing the handgun inside. The muzzle, which had just fired a bullet, was still hot.
In this dangerous apocalypse, the bad guys weren’t the only ones executing missions. There were also those who guarded the base. Like him.
His sole reason for dining at the cafeteria today was ostensibly to inspect the food windows, but in reality, he had received a mission. Someone wanted to sabotage the Han City Base’s circuits. The chief designer, Zhang Yishan, was scheduled to conduct a transaction at one o’clock in the afternoon. The organization had ordered Gu Rongjin to eliminate Zhang Yishan and stop the sabotage.
Thus, the shooting incident had occurred. Under the pretext of going to the restroom, he had slipped away and flawlessly put a bullet through Zhang Yishan’s head from a hidden corner, entirely unnoticed.
Because of the shooting, Chen Momo and Xu Xiaoka closed up shop early today.
Although they hadn’t seen exactly what happened at the scene, Xu Xiaoka clearly remembered the chaos of the crowd. Even after returning home, she was still immersed in fear.
“Sister Momo, do you think those people will kill us?” Xu Xiaoka asked worriedly.
Chen Momo comforted her, “They won’t. Don’t overthink it. The shooting was clearly due to a conflict of interests. As long as we don’t stir up trouble, we won’t be in any danger.”
Although she said that out loud, Chen Momo also began to feel that the Han City Base wasn’t entirely safe. Above all else, she had to protect her son’s life. After mulling it over, she decided to get her hands on some bulletproof vests for them to wear.
It was a chaotic world now. The refuge base could only provide basic living conditions, but it couldn’t guarantee their family’s safety. Besides making money, she had to ensure her own survival as well as that of her son and Xu Xiaoka. That was more important than anything else. However, acquiring bulletproof vests in the apocalypse was no easy feat.
The next day, Chen Momo inquired at the front desk and learned about a man in the base named Sun Fei, nicknamed “Sun Lingtong.”
In this apocalypse, Sun Fei could get his hands on all sorts of scarce supplies, though his prices were several times higher than normal. Cigars, weapons, red wine, and even a host of contrabands… Regardless, Sun Fei had extensive connections and could always find a channel to source goods.
In the past, this kind of illegal trade would have landed someone behind bars; it was putting one’s life on the line to make a buck. But now, it was a time of chaos. With mere survival being a struggle, no one cared about what kind of business others ran. Sun Fei was intent on making his fortune out of this very chaos.
Chen Momo sought out Sun Fei and expressed her request, asking him to help her acquire a few bulletproof vests.
Sun Fei’s shrewd little eyes darted craftily before he suddenly broke into a grin at Chen Momo. “Boss Chen, your pickled fish window is booming. You must have made quite a fortune lately, eh?”
