Chapter 56—Help Us, Young Master
Hua Mingyue looked at Lei Cheng and shook her head when he voiced the fear that some unseen supreme being might have planned all of this.
"You’re imagining too much," she said. "Let’s start from the beginning." Her voice rose, "If you don’t understand your own success, you’ll never understand how to surpass it."
She raised her index finger.
"First, the supreme beings failed to create the Bizarre Martial Path because they could not comprehend Bizarre Intent at the same level as the path required."
Lei Cheng nodded. "I entered the state of death to comprehend it."
Hua Mingyue fell silent for a moment, then asked, "Do you really think they lacked the ability to enter death, or lacked the talent to comprehend intent?"
Lei Cheng frowned. "That’s what I’m thinking. They could enter that death state and comprehend intent, but it still shouldn’t have been enough. For Level One, I needed ten percent Bizarre Intent. For Level Five, I’d need fifty percent. To reach that level, they would have to remain in the state of death far too long. By the time they comprehended it, their bodies might already have perished."
"Yes, the answer had always been within reach. They simply couldn’t survive long enough to grasp it." Hua Mingyue nodded. "That’s where they got stuck."
Lei Cheng let out a breath. "Then I broke through it."
"You did," she said.
He raised his voice. "But after that, everything became much easier, without any real difficulty."
She smiled faintly. "You already had the framework. Standing on the shoulders of countless failures made it possible. It still doesn’t diminish your achievement. All you really did was change the Blood Qi and the existing method."
Lei Cheng looked unconvinced. "Even if it was just a little, it still feels too simple."
Hua Mingyue’s expression sharpened. "Do you really think it was simple to create a brand-new peak Level One technique? Your Supreme Nine Yang Body Tempering Technique is on par with Dragon Phoenix Body Tempering and Divine Elephant Body Tempering techniques. Those were created through hundreds of years of research. You built upon existing records, modified the Blood Qi, and relied on your Instant Enlightenment."
Lei Cheng nodded slowly. "So it really was my own work."
"Of course," Hua Mingyue nodded lightly. "The only thing the ancient beings failed at was fusion. And the records had already pointed to where they failed." She paused for a moment. "Don’t ever think that supreme beings couldn’t create a technique like yours. Given enough thought, they could create thousands of techniques far superior to it in mere seconds."
Lei Cheng exhaled, visibly relieved. "So I wasn’t being used as a chess piece."
"No, you are not." Hua Mingyue said, shaking her head. "You succeeded on your own. History gave you clues. You were the one who turned them into a success."
He stood there for a moment in silence, then asked, "So should I start experimenting for level 2?"
Hua Mingyue’s answer was immediate. "We have to get married first."
Lei Cheng froze.
Then he said, just as naturally, "Okay. Let’s get married." He smiled. ’First marriage in two lives... I wasn’t married on Earth.’
"Ha-ha." Hua Mingyue laughed, covering her mouth with her hand fan.
Lei Cheng felt his heart melt at her soft, melodious voice. ’What a sweet voice. Can she sing?’
"First deal with a few troublesome pests... Then we can get married." She turned toward the direction of the constabulary.
At that moment, the doors to Lei Cheng’s room slammed open. Thud!
A middle-aged servant with streaks of gray hair and a middle-aged maid in a plain pink robe rushed in and fell to their knees.
"Young Master, please save our child!"
They slammed their foreheads to the floor repeatedly. Thud! Thud! Their foreheads quickly reddened, yet neither of them stopped begging.
Lei Cheng’s eyes widened. "What happened?"
He crouched and pulled them up by their shoulders. The maid was crying uncontrollably. The man bit his lip and forced the words out between sobs, grabbing Lei Cheng’s hand with trembling fingers, as though afraid to let go.
"For the past month and a half, children have been disappearing. Kidnapped by bizarre creatures. Their bodies are found the next day—eaten."
Lei Cheng’s expression hardened. ’So they’ve already entered the city as expected.’
He patted both of them on the shoulders. "Don’t worry. I’ll find your child."
The servant and maid staggered out, still giving pleading eyes, and Lei Cheng watched them go before turning to Hua Mingyue.
"I was too focused on cultivation. I expected not to have much time left. Yet I still had this amount of time. Why?" He narrowed his eyes.
Hua Mingyue tilted her head. "You expected the bizarre creatures to gather and begin using Azure Cloud City as their plaything, didn’t you?"
Lei Cheng nodded. "That’s the kind of thing I’d expect once the white flames, the flames of protection in the sky, had vanished."
Hua Mingyue unfolded a rose-patterned fan from her storage ring and glanced toward the window. The sun sat high in the sky, but its color had changed—darker than it had been before.
"Because of a Bizarre Rule," she said.
Lei Cheng’s eyes narrowed. "You mean someone invoked it?"
"Yes."
"Then why aren’t more bizarre creatures joining in?" he asked. "Can’t they all tag along and eat the humans together?"
"They could," Hua Mingyue said. "But they aren’t. That means the one who invoked the rule is very strong."
Lei Cheng’s face turned grave. "I don’t have much time."
He rushed out and found the maids and servants cleaning the garden. Guards were patrolling. The garden was silent and calm.
The servants had already escorted the prisoners to the guest rooms and locked them in for the time being. Lei Cheng didn’t object; he still needed them for later experiments. He noticed his father had already been taken to his room to rest.
’I injected Life Intent...’ he sighed. ’Dad will recover soon.’
Across Azure Cloud City, in the government district, the top floor of the City Lord’s pavilion was filled with tension.
The City Lord Min, Chief Constable Jiao, and City Magistrate Po sat around a long table, all three visibly unsettled.
"What just happened?" City Lord Min snapped. "Why is no one above responding?"
The City Magistrate Po sighed heavily. "I had received one reply."
"And?" Chief Constable Jiao hissed.
The City Magistrate rubbed his forehead. "They said they would come... but only after a month."
The City Lord stared. "A month? Why?"
Chief Constable Jiao slammed his palms on the table. "A month has passed by now. Isn’t it?"
City Magistrate Po clenched his jaw. "Many cities were in trouble along the way."
"Can we hold on?" City Lord Min spat. They all knew the situation was very bad in the city.
The room fell into uneasy silence.
Then a deep blue sparrow flew in through the window and landed on the City Magistrate’s shoulder.
"A message," he muttered.
The City Magistrate untied the note from the sparrow’s leg, opened it, and began to read.
After a few moments, the paper slipped from his fingers.
He froze, sweat beginning to fall from his forehead.
"It’s done," he whispered. "Azure Cloud City is finished."
All three higher officials of Azure Cloud City felt their hearts rise to their throats. No one in the room spoke. Even breathing felt painfully loud.
