Chapter 340: Chapter 7: Pretending to Be Able to See

In a bamboo forest on the back mountain, a small, dilapidated Daoist Temple stood quietly.

The Daoist Temple was clearly old. The walls were riddled with cracks, and you could tell at a glance it had weathered many trials. The only reason it hadn’t collapsed was that the divine statue inside must have been sentient and was literally holding it up.

There was no lock on the door, not that the door served any purpose. Half of it had already fallen off, and the remaining half was like a candle in the wind, teetering precariously.

Walking into the Daoist Temple, Duan Fei found it was barely larger than a bathroom—in fact, it was worse than a bathroom.

After all, a bathroom at least has a light. This place didn’t even have that.

The incense burner was full of water. Rain had leaked through the broken roof, leaving the place in a complete mess.

In the black, muddy water, yellow talisman paper had rotted away. Fist-sized spider carcasses and various insect shells were mixed together, highlighting the temple’s destitution.

But in this dilapidated little hut, Duan Fei saw a platter of fine pork knuckle placed before the divine statue, its clean surface gleaming in the dim Daoist Temple.

He stared at the pork knuckle for a moment, and the item’s Description popped up.

“Pork Knuckle: Uncontaminated, White-grade, cannot be taken out of the instance.

Description: An ordinary pork knuckle, but it has already been used as an offering. A certain Divine Spirit is ecstatic over this rare offering, so it’s best not to move it rashly. However, if you offer it something in return, there might be some room for negotiation.”

In this instance, the Description for items was equivalent to a hint for clearing it, allowing one to understand certain things.

After reading the Description, Duan Fei knew that the normal way to clear this would be to wait for that Divine Spirit to return, then complete some disgusting but necessary side quests to obtain the pork knuckle, and then complete the so-called task from the Old Dao.

But Duan Fei clearly didn’t want to do something so complicated. He picked up the pork knuckle and walked toward the door.

Before he even reached the door, he heard a clap of thunder.

Then, the ground began to shake, more lightning danced in the air, and a massive Golden Armored Divine Spirit took form amidst the lightning, stepping out from the divine statue.

“Which rat-like cur dares to steal my offering!”

This deity was clad in golden armor, held a long fork, wore a Purple Gold Crown, and had a green face with bared fangs. He radiated an intimidating aura without even trying.

His furious roar was like thunder, shaking the entire back mountain and scattering all the demons.

However, even though Duan Fei was right in front of him, he still couldn’t see Duan Fei.

Especially when Duan Fei put the pork knuckle into his inventory, this Divine Spirit shrieked with rage, formed a hand seal, and began searching for the little thief.

But no matter how many seals he formed, he could sense the person was right here, yet he couldn’t see them at all.

After forming seals repeatedly, the Divine Spirit couldn’t figure it out. He could only perform his calculations and checks over and over, but ultimately came up with nothing.

Meanwhile, Duan Fei watched its impotent rage and figured that its fundamental nature was probably similar to that of a ghost.

But through some serendipitous opportunity, it had gained some worship here, obtained a divine position, and ultimately become a deity.

But clearly, it wasn’t doing very well for itself. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have gotten so angry over a single plate of raw pork knuckle.

Strolling away casually, Duan Fei returned to the kitchen, handed the crystal pork knuckle to Cuihua, and told her to start cooking.

And when Cuihua started cooking, Little Fatty began to tremble.

Standing by the window, he pointed outside and shouted in terror, “Brother Duan, the moon is out! It’s so red, and it’s smiling at me!”

Duan Fei glanced at the Mist-filled sky outside and said nonchalantly, “Then you should smile back at it. If that doesn’t work, just pull down your pants. Give it one more reason to laugh at you.”

“I’m already scared to death, and you’re still making dirty jokes! And for your information, I’m very well-endowed, okay!”

“Then you should still pull down your pants. Maybe it’ll be scared of you.”

“Duan Someone! Besides going to the bathroom, where else in this game can you even take off your pants!”

“When you want to show others how small and… compact you are.”

“Duan Someone!”

After being teased like this by Duan Fei, Little Fatty forgot his fear and sat down to trade insults with him.

Once they had insulted each other enough, Duan Fei took out his drone, handed it to Little Fatty, and said, “Try using this to take a look around. See if there’s anything unusual.”

Little Fatty quickly sent the drone into the air, then stared nervously at the phone screen and said, “I can’t see anything! It’s like the drone fell into a sea of blood.”

Duan Fei leaned over and saw that the image on the screen was completely normal. There was no so-called red light.

From this, it was clear that the effect on Little Fatty wasn’t diminished by observing through a machine. The mysterious influence was acting directly on his brain, making him unable to distinguish reality anymore.

Understanding this, Duan Fei took control of the drone and flew it around to observe the surroundings.

The Daoist Temple they were in was located halfway up a mountain. Below was a quaint, ancient-looking town.

It had just rained in the town, and the bluestone slabs, wet with rain, had become like mirrors, reflecting the town within them.

For some unknown reason, the entire town was brightly lit, with large red lanterns hanging between the buildings. But there wasn’t a single sound of human activity, only the continuous sounds of whimpering and opera singing.

Using the sonar function, Duan Fei located the household that was holding a funeral and discovered that it was also a Daoist Temple.

A large coffin lay in the center of the Daoist Temple, and several paper effigies surrounded it, crying ceaselessly, looking utterly heartbroken.

And in the middle of the coffin, an old man in white burial clothes lay with his eyes closed, a piece of uneaten cabbage leaf still hanging from the corner of his mouth.

Watching the footage with Duan Fei, Little Fatty let out a terrified scream, then pointed at the old man on the screen and stammered, “He… he… he…”

“Calm down. They say if you point at a dead person, you’ll wet the bed at night.”

“I’ve already peed myself! This is why I hate supernatural instances! How did a perfectly good gourmet instance turn into this?! This is an instance Assassin! What if I get scared to death?”

“Looking at your vigorous Spirit, I’d say you could live for several more decades.”

“This is a final burst of energy before death!”

Just as the two were talking, the Little Daoist standing guard in front of the Elder Daoist made his move.

Looking at the drone overhead, the Little Daoist sneered and pointed a finger at the air.

Duan Fei felt nothing at all. Little Fatty, on the other hand, screamed and said tremblingly, “So scary! Aren’t you afraid, Duan Someone?”

“It’s a bit embarrassing to say, but I can’t see anything at all.”

“Your attempt at acting cool is so stiff! How can you pretend not to see something so terrifying? What’s wrong with you!”

Duan Fei shrugged helplessly.

From his perspective, the Little Daoist had just pointed randomly like a Stand User, and Little Fatty had reacted like a Stand User, leaving him, the only normal person, feeling so awkward he wanted to dig a three-bedroom apartment out of the floor with his toes.

At that moment, Duan Fei felt like he should just pretend he could see it too. Otherwise, it was just too awkward.
