Chapter 270. Running Away from Home
Wind Dragon Ventus returned to Majia, Wisdom’s main camp, where he had first set out.
First Daughter Cos and Third Son Ryan accompanied him, and the three ascended to the top of the Magic Tower.
Normally, Ventus would not have needed to be there, but he had chosen to come along.
Almost nothing they had experienced on the front line at the Tower of the Sky would be easy to believe.
RUMBLE—
The elevator reached the highest floor it could access.
“…Dad.”
The Family Head of Wisdom stood on the 100th floor.
He was alone on the 100th, which the elevator could reach, rather than the 101st. His hands rested behind his back in a measured pose, and he stood turned away.
His gaze was fixed on the stairs leading to the 101st floor. The three from the elevator could see only his back.
In the heavy silence, the First Daughter called to the Family Head of Wisdom again.
“Dad.”
“…Family Head.”
“Page.”
The three addressed Wisdom’s Family Head differently.
The First Daughter’s address was familiar, the Third Son’s was the opposite, and the Wind Dragon used his name.
So, too, were their positions different.
“I’m sorry. I’ve disappointed you.”
The First Daughter naturally approached her father, while the Third Son naturally dropped to one knee.
Ventus walked beside her and added,
“You need not give me the reward you promised. I will take no further part in this war, but I will not object if you call another dragon.”
“…….”
Page, Wisdom’s Family Head, still did not turn around. Without looking at any of their faces, he slowly opened his mouth.
“Pia was taken prisoner.”
“…Yes. That’s my fault, too. My fight with the Eastern blood relatives went on too long, and I failed to watch what was happening behind us.”
“It was not only the Eastern blood relatives. The Fire Dragon who serves that human Fifth Son as his master is far from ordinary.”
“That’s not all. None of the other Eastern blood relatives were weak enough to dismiss. And―”
“Enough.”
Cutting his daughter off, the father took a parchment tied with a blue cord from inside his clothes.
It was the situation report she had sent ahead with Messenger Paras before setting out for Majia.
“This tells me everything I need to hear and know. I do not want excuses. I can work out the reasons for our defeat myself.”
The Family Head turned to face them.
“Cos. I am asking you for a solution.”
The Family Head did not spare even a glance for his youngest son kneeling before him. His eyes stayed on his proud eldest daughter the whole time.
Eldest daughter Cos lowered her head slightly, unlike her usual self, and looked uncertain.
But she did have a plan.
“Millesdusk succeeded in its first advance and took Sky Island as a base. They’re probably sending reinforcements and supplies.”
“Yes. Even at the very earliest, it will take a good two weeks for supplies to reach Sky Island.”
“Then we have to retake it within two weeks. But….”
The First Daughter trailed off, then voiced the worry on her face.
“Pia is being held on Sky Island. So we either have to send someone in to get her out or surround the island densely instead.”
“Hmm. Even if supplies come, we could cut them off and let the enemy destroy themselves.”
“Right.”
Even though it was Sky Island, this was still a siege. The only difference was that the castle floated in the air.
“But, Dad.”
The Family Head was thinking about a siege. The First Daughter was thinking of something else.
“I want to rescue Pia first.”
“Hmm. Cos, think carefully.”
The eldest daughter believed the hostage must be rescued before a siege, but her father opposed her.
“Sky Island is a fortress, but in the larger view, it is poison, and they are rats. They will not readily harm the Second Daughter, who is all but their lifeline.”
“What if they’re torturing her right now?”
“I will visit the Second Daughter’s dream and check. Even if she is being tortured, I can help her to some extent.”
“That’s… a relief.”
The First Daughter breathed a sigh of relief, but the shoulder of the Third Son, kneeling silently, trembled faintly.
The First Daughter took little interest in matters outside her own affairs, but the Third Son knew.
He had to keep his mouth shut. Here and now, silence was the way to survive. And yet…
“…Family Head.”
People learned to speak at a year old, it was said, but could live their whole lives without learning when to keep quiet. The Third Son was no exception.
“As I understand it, a dream cannot relieve pain. Are you not intending to enter Second Daughter Pia’s mind through her dream and suppress the information inside her head?”
The eyes of the Wind Dragon, the Family Head, and the First Daughter turned to the kneeling Ryan.
Ventus glanced at the Family Head. Anger was plain on the face he saw.
Before that anger could erupt, the First Daughter spoke more quickly.
“If he suppresses it, what… what happens then?”
“It would put a tremendous strain on her brain, and if something went wrong, she could be left incapacitated―”
KRAKOOOM—!!
Thunder and lightning struck. It startled even Ventus, but Ryan’s sister moved.
Before she knew it, she had reacted on instinct and placed herself between the lightning and her blood relative.
WHOOOOSH—!!
A circular rush of wind met the bolt.
It was not powerful enough to kill if it struck, so deflecting it was not difficult. But she could not understand.
“D-Dad.”
“…Cos. Step aside. This is discipline.”
“Throwing lightning at the youngest is discipline? I’ve never heard of discipline like that.”
“Haha….”
The Third Son gave a bitter laugh too quiet for anyone to hear.
This was something the First Daughter alone did not know. Their father had raised his hand far more often than she imagined.
“Dad. Explain it to me. If you use your power through dream magic, will Pia really end up as Ryan said?”
“…We will discuss that privately. You must be tired in many ways. Go downstairs and rest. The same goes for you, Ventus.”
“As you wish. Families should settle family matters among themselves.”
“Ryan. You stay for a moment.”
“…Yes.”
Cos shook her head.
“No. I’m staying, too. If you don’t want that, let Ryan go and rest as well.”
Page, the Family Head, frowned.
“Will you keep being stubborn?”
“We lost together. We lost Sky Island together, and we lost Pia together. If you’re going to punish us, punish us equally.”
“You are Wisdom’s next Family Head. Stop talking nonsense and go downstairs.”
The Family Head waved his hand through the air.
RUMBLE—!
One section of the floor, formed from three elevators, sank abruptly.
Ventus and Cos went down with it, farther and farther below. Before it reached the first floor, Cos shouted,
“Ventus!”
“Damn it. You take responsibility for what happens next.”
GRAB!
Ventus took Cos by the waist with both hands and lifted her. He spun his body through one full turn.
The 7th Circle Wind-Attribute mage and the Wind Dragon spun together, generating an updraft beneath their feet.
They had made a one-use elevator.
“Jump!”
WHOOOOOSH—!!
They flew against gravity.
Their bodies, which had only been falling, reversed course and surged upward like a waterspout. They reached the top in no time.
“I’ll bring Pia back.”
“Cos, you―”
“I’m sorry, Dad.”
Holding Ryan, the First Daughter fell again. This time, she used the wind to fall even faster.
“I do not know if this is right.”
Ventus caught them in a current of air before they hit the floor, then sighed at the First Daughter and Third Son.
“The elder will give me a mountain of a scolding.”
“You can stand to hear a little scolding, Ventus.”
“After I helped you, you impudent girl?”
“I am grateful for that. Come on, Ryan.”
“B-Big Sister. But….”
The Third Son, unexpectedly swept up in his big sister’s arms and carried away, lifted his head.
The elevator had descended, leaving a wide-open hole in the floor. His father’s eyes looked pale as he gazed down through it.
Ryan swallowed dryly on instinct, and his body trembled. Cos felt the tremor and reassured her youngest brother.
“Don’t worry. Once we bring Pia back and the three of us regain the advantage, Dad’s anger will pass.”
“…….”
That only applies to you, you crazy sister!
Ryan could not bring himself to say it.
“Let’s go save Pia.”
“…Yes. Let’s go.”
The youngest had no choice but to go along with his big sister’s tyranny. Such was the law of the world.
“Do as you please. I am leaving.”
Outside that law, the Wind Dragon drifted away at his leisure, though he kept looking back at Cos.
His concern was plain to see, but the First Daughter remained oblivious to other people’s feelings.
So her younger brother patted her back, nodded to himself, and turned to Ventus.
“Ventus. My big sister says she wants to see you again and thanks you for everything. She’s terribly shy about saying it herself.”
“R-Ryan. When did I…?”
“Ahem! Well, nothing can be done if she is shy. You humans take so much looking after. Fine, we shall meet again, as you wish.”
The Wind Dragon left with a far broader smile than before, turning into a current of wind.
His laughter seemed to ride the light breeze around them.
“Big Sister. It’s better to be a little warmer to someone who helps you first and asks for nothing in return.”
“I thought I was being warm.”
By Cos’s standards, simply making good eye contact was warm and kind. The rest of the world used a different standard.
“I know, but with things like this, you need to exaggerate everything a little.”
“Exaggerate…. All right. I’ll remember.”
As they left the Magic Tower, Cos nodded.
In truth, she did not really know what he meant, but she was pleased to have spoken with her youngest brother without any awkwardness, so she nodded.
“Let’s go to Sky Island.”
“How? Our wyverns died.”
“We’ll have to find new wyverns.”
The Third Son sighed faintly.
“…Big Sister. Tamed wyverns aren’t common. I doubt even Majia has any as fine as the ones we rode.”
“Mm. I know. That’s why we need to find a person to be our new wyvern.”
“A person…?”
First Daughter Cos nodded.
“The collateral relative serving as a Messenger. I heard his Polymorph magic is better even than that of the direct line.”
“You mean Paras. That much is true, but….”
The Third Son’s words trailed off along with his thoughts. When he finished thinking, his eyes filled with a terrible suspicion.
Such suspicions had spelled trouble for people anywhere on the continent.
“That’s right. We’re going to ride the Messenger.”
A plan and a party formed on the spot, without knowing whether the Messenger himself would agree.

The arriving supplies included food, drinking water, and materials for repairs.
The Black Colossal Fortress and Skeleton Giant Horse needed repairs after enduring the bombardment of eighty Mana Cannons of the Tower of the Sky. They began refitting with the delivered supplies.
“The Chief Secretaries of the sons’ camps say the repairs should be finished in about a week. They are glad the supplies came quickly.”
“Yes. Structures built using undead are easy to repair, but leave them damaged too long and the work grows harder on its own.”
“The repair problem is settled. Next is the second delivery of Dark Elixir.”
The Head Maid’s and youngest son’s duties were divided precisely.
She arranged the problems they faced neatly into a workbook, and he solved them.
“The 2nd process requires time to mature at Dusk Fortress. Even if we gather everything available, there will be enough for two battles at most.”
“Hmm.”
“Dark Elixir is the reason we can face Wisdom’s mage army with only the blood relatives. We cannot afford to run short.”
“I know.”
Only the 1st process could be scaled up easily. The 2nd required time of its own, and Sky Island had to buy that time.
As the youngest son considered how to do that, the face of one of his employees came to mind.
“Call the Forest Witch. I need to ask if she wants to indulge her hobby on a grand scale.”
DING—!
