Chapter 267. The Defeated Soldiers

The ‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍Master of the Tower of the Sky turned in shock. For some reason, he had to look behind him to see the Black Ship making that heavy, thunderous noise.

Which ‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍meant one thing.

“It ‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍broke through your defenses, and Sky Island was taken.”

SHUNK—

The ‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍blade of the daughters’ spirit, Giant Knight Mhul, pierced the Master of the Tower of the Sky.

With him, there were no more mages left alive, body and soul.

“That’s also why we let you live in front of us until now.”

“…To delay… the departure of the follow-up force… for as long as possible…?”

“That’s right.”

The Second Daughter answered without much interest and slowly drew out the translucent blade. It had pierced him soundlessly, passing through his stomach and out his back.

Yet he had not actually felt the pain of being run through. He felt only a little cold.

The farther she drew the blade out, the more of the pierced man’s soul emerged on its blue-gray surface.

“If we dealt with you too quickly, Wisdom would send reinforcements. We needed to buy time until Sky Island was occupied.”

“Ha….”

The Master of the Tower of the Sky lowered his head in despair. But he was not done.

“The First Daughter… the Family Head… will surely destroy you….”

“A curse from a Western mage. How frightening.”

SHHHK—

She drew the giant knight’s blade out completely. At its tip was the stabbed man’s soul instead of flesh.

With its soul gone, his body’s eyes lost focus, and it collapsed limply like a doll.

“At least you won’t live to see it.”

She absorbed the soul at the blade’s tip into the Spirit Prison. She also recalled all the spirits that had attacked the Tower of the Sky.

The spirit legion had not been as effective as expected. The reason was the faint blue chains the tower master and mages had wielded.

“Nullifying Decree Chains, was it? That’s a nuisance.”

Nod.

The Nullifying Decree Chains could touch spirits and even attack them. Wisdom had developed a defense against spirits, too.

But one did not need insecticide to kill an insect.

“They could defend against spirits, but they couldn’t stop you kicking them. That was funny in its own way.”

Nod, nod.

At her elder sister’s words, the younger sister raised the corners of her mouth ever so slightly.

Unlike her sister, Third Daughter Melaine had received the blessing of the body and relied on her superior physical ability.

The mages who tried to ward off the spirits with their Nullifying Decree Chains could not withstand the Third Daughter’s kicks.

Once a mage lost their stance, the protection of the chains fell away, and the Second Daughter struck.

She absorbed the soul, then repeated the process. They had watched the wider battle and drawn things out until…

“As expected, the youngest succeeded.”

She looked at the Black Ship in the sky. But it was not the only thing aloft.

“…A dragon?”

A white dragon with a long neck and tail darted to and fro. He appeared for a moment at a speed worthy of an arrow, then vanished just as quickly.

“Ah, ah! My toy!”

At the same time, they heard the Fourth Son’s cry from nearby.

They had just seen enough to tell what had happened.

“The Wind Dragon took the First Daughter and the Third Son and ran.”

The Third Daughter gazed at her elder sister. The Second Daughter nodded at the look.

“Yes. The Wind Dragon looked to be in a bad way, too. It seems our dragon nearly beat him.”

But their dragon could not catch a Wind Dragon moving at that speed and had only now reached the battlefield.

A dragon’s face was not easy to read, but his disappointment was palpable now.

There was something else they could see high above, besides the dragon’s thoughts.

The youngest, Millesdusk’s Fifth Son, stepped out onto the deck of the Black Ship.

“Let’s go, Melaine.”

Nod.

The daughters on the ground, along with the Fourth Son and the First Son, made their way to the Black Ship.

Now that the false Black Ship and the Clone aboard it had also returned, the youngest son greeted his siblings in person.

“You all worked very hard. My elder brothers and sisters were the ones who made this first advance possible.”

“You planned everything from beginning to end. Keep being too modest and I’ll get angry~.”

The Fourth Son gave him a few light punches with his little fist and a bright smile.

Despite his threat to get angry, his delighted grin seemed to ask for more praise, but the Second Daughter cut in.

“What will you do with the Towers of the Sky?”

“The Gatekeeper of my camp is dealing with them.”

The Gatekeeper had left the Black Ship ahead of them and first helped the First Son.

Then he began clearing the Towers of the Sky, flying between them on wings of rock scales.

His aerobatics were enough to make onlookers’ hearts lurch. They also took hearts in a much more literal sense.

It was the youngest son’s order: remove each heart and leave one of the Skeleton Soldiers he had supplied beside it.

The fires of the Towers of the Sky began to go out one by one, and before long all eighty Mana Cannons lost their light.

In their place, Skeleton Soldiers of the Fifth Son’s legion took over and lit new fires in the Mana Cannons.

“Sky Island and all eighty Mana Cannons of the Tower of the Sky are ours now. We will take the remaining twenty today as well.”

“Yes, yes. The sooner we get this done, the better~.”

Taking the last twenty would be the work of the Fifth Son’s camp, whose forces still had strength to spare.

“First we need to move the Skeleton Giant Horse and the Black Colossal Fortress close to Sky Island and regroup. The Head Maid will have preparations under way, so let us go.”

“Whew~. Busy, busy.”

“Word that Sky Island has fallen will reach Wisdom before long. We must move twice as fast as they do.”

“We must.”

Sweat he had not yet wiped away covered the nodding First Son’s forehead.

Only the First Son could have held his own in a direct battle against the First Daughter.

She had even reached the 7th Circle and become a true high-level mage, a veritable walking fortress that could not be breached.

Had the First Son’s progress in the Six Paths been slower or inadequate, he could not even have matched her.

Of course, the System’s balance patch in response to the Fifth Son’s actions had played a large part in making her so strong.

“I’m sorry, Eldest Brother. I don’t think I can give you much time to rest.”

He spoke with a measure of guilt to the eldest brother on whom he inevitably had to rely in such a large war.

Hiler gave a faint smile.

“It is fine. My younger siblings are lacking, so I must make up the difference.”

“Thank you.”

That covered the important instructions. All that remained was to enter Sky Island quickly.

“Have the Skeleton Giant Horse and the fortress head toward Sky Island. For now, I suggest you take the Black Ship there.”

“What, did you set up a party to celebrate~?”

“Nothing that elaborate, but we should celebrate. There is alcohol and some food aboard to last until the supplies arrive.”

“Oh~. That’s incredible!”

The Fourth Son clapped his hands in delight, but the First Son would not let his younger brother carry on like that.

“Fourth Son. Why not stick to your usual hot chocolate? Drink now and you might never grow any taller.”

“…Hey. Round two. Now.”

“Dante. Get us moving.”

“A wise decision.”

RUMBLE—

The Black Ship turned its bow and flew toward Sky Island again.

***

“Hahh…. Hh….”

Ventus, who had barely managed to Polymorph, landed somewhere whose name he did not know and set down the two humans he had saved with the last of his strength.

In truth, there was only one he had wanted to save so desperately. He had rescued the other as well because he could not bear the anger the first would unleash when she woke.

Ventus laid Wisdom’s First Daughter and Third Son side by side, then collapsed beside them.

The Wind Dragon had barely closed his wounds through a dragon’s healing ability, but his skin was pale. A great mass of blood had suddenly been taken from his body.

It was not simply blood lost to a bite. Taken was the right word.

“That bastard…. Was his mother a bat? How can a dragon suck blood?”

He muttered as he lay on the grass. The few seconds he had surrendered in sheer surprise had been enough to turn the fight around.

The dragon that had drunk his blood broke out of the iron cage of storm winds with firepower beyond anything he had shown before.

He had literally broken through it. With his own legs, he had torn the wind apart brutally, cut through it, and absorbed even that.

After swallowing blood and then wind, the Fire Dragon had leaped across the years that separated him from the Wind Dragon.

The wind had played a part, but that was temporary. Ventus knew the true reason.

“He really grew stronger through blood, like a vampire….”

A chill seemed to pass over his skin, raising goose bumps.

“The more blood he drinks, the stronger he becomes….”

His mouth gave a hollow laugh after voicing an assumption that seemed close to the truth.

This was the first dragon from the East he had ever met, and he felt he was about to develop a strange prejudice against Eastern dragons.

“I’ve seen some mad bastards in my time.”

Though he had spoken to no one, his muttering inadvertently woke one of the humans beside him.

“…Ventus….”

“…You’re awake.”

Cos could barely open her eyes. Through blurred vision, she looked up at the sunset sky.

She could not possibly get up. The moment she opened her eyes, pain flooded in like a tide, leaving her unable to move even a finger.

“I didn’t even get to see the Fifth Son in the end.”

“That gray-eyed human was stronger than I expected. I never imagined he could match you after you reached the 7th Circle.”

“Even apart from the First Son, none of the blood relatives could be dismissed. I never thought they’d be this strong….”

The First Daughter realized that, without knowing it, she had been looking down on the East.

Perhaps reaching the 7th Circle had naturally broadened her view. Not only the East, but so much of the world had seemed small to her.

Yet the human was not the only one who had stepped out of the well today.

“I nearly came to grief myself. If the Fire Dragon had been even slightly familiar with blood-drinking, I might have died there.”

Just as the Wind Dragon was unused to drinking blood, so was the Fire Dragon.

The young Fire Dragon had left an opening, and for the Wind Dragon, that opening was a path to survival.

He had barely escaped and returned to the battlefield, only to find it in chaos as well. He saved those he could and fled.

“Is your younger brother all right?”

“Yes. Apart from mana exhaustion, he isn’t badly hurt.”

“Let him sleep. No one followed us, so we should recover here before returning to Majia.”

The Wind Dragon clicked his tongue after speaking.

“Damn it. I do not know if even one of the other dragons will believe me when we return. A dragon sucking blood. Hah.”

“…Thank you, Ventus.”

The thanks came out of nowhere. It was the first time he had heard it from that arrogant human.

“For saving you? Forget it. I only did what I could.”

“You saved my brother, too.”

“I could do that, so I did. I could not save the Second Daughter.”

Cos nodded heavily.

“I’ll save Pia.”

“It seems the Fifth Son has her. She was not on the battlefield, and that black ship came from the direction of Sky Island.”

“They broke through our defenses, occupied Sky Island, and then attacked us from behind.”

“Yes. What looked like a frontal assault was a way to buy time.”

Ventus shook his head where he lay.

“That Fifth Son is no ordinary human, just as you said. How he hid a black ship in that clear sky and brought it in, I cannot imagine.”

For the second time since he was born, the dragon acknowledged a human.

The first had been the West’s First Daughter. The second was the East’s Fifth Son.

He did not know how it had happened, and that was precisely the problem. The Fifth Son had used a method even a dragon could not understand.

They had been deceived once, and with no way to grasp how, there was no assurance it would not happen again tomorrow.

Yet they would have to fight again tomorrow. It was the only way to get her sister back.

They would have to break through all the difficult problems the Fifth Son had surely prepared and rescue her.
