Chapter 610: Maybe Not That
Chapter 610: Maybe Not That
As they talked, Dominic began to prepare clay for the pistol moulds.
They needed those more than anything else, with the new wave of soldiers that were being sent to Wistover.
Well, pistols and Mortars.
The soldiers were likely to be equipped with spears and swords already, though the quality was sure to be questionable at best.
However, they would not be issued artillery of any sort, and they certainly wouldn’t be given magitech pistols.
Dominic didn’t know whether they were going to get veterans or a bunch of freshly drafted recruits from orphaned families, the sort who wouldn’t mind being shuffled around the nation for the majority of their career.
But they were going to be getting soldiers, the King had said so.
“I will show you the mass production method for pistols next.
It’s not pretty, and it’s not intended to be. It’s the fastest and easiest way to make basic magitech weapons known to Cygnia.
Actually, now that I’ve said that, I likely shouldn’t do it in front of the lot of you, given that you’re all not from Cygnia, and these are weapons destined to end up in the hands of our troops.” Dominic realized.
The Advisors laughed. “Well, I suppose that is true. There is military cooperation baked into the treaties, but not to the level of sharing manufacturing secrets.
What else do you have that will keep us out here and away from the chaos inside the house for at least one more hour?”
“Well, I can show you the method for making our local fireplace inserts. That’s far from a trade secret, the design isn’t even original to Wistover. At least not entirely.
We used design elements from multiple existing products to make the magitech orb to be as mana efficient as possible while still heating the house, or working as a stove.
Then, we insert it into a kiln fired clay fake log bundle, and sell it for use in a standard fireplace or wood stove.
The idea is that there are nearly two hundred million households in the northeastern region of the continent, and mostly only the noble few percent have a magitech stove.
Not only will this reduce the amount of wood that needs to be harvested, which will free up a lot of labour time for some Baronies, it will also reduce air pollution within the city.
Even in Cygnia, a properly Magitech Capital, nearly everyone in the lower side of the city brings in wood or coal for heat.” Dominic offered.
“That’s because they can’t afford a magitech stove. Hell, a magitech stove insert likely isn’t much cheaper than a whole stove, it’s the orb that’s the expensive part.”
Dominic nodded. “Indeed it is. And in most cities, there aren’t enough trained workers to mass produce them, even if they wanted to.
But here, I have a full factory, and they’re turning out over two hundred units a day. It’s still quite time intensive, and the product isn’t what anyone would call a small purchase.
However, it is cheaper than having a lumber man bring in a winter worth of wood, or ordering a cart full of coal for the winter.
Those in the slums will probably never be able to afford it, but they can’t afford a whole cart of coal, either. But if we can work our way through the middle class, and the upper middle class, who are much more likely to replace things that aren’t broken, there will eventually be a chance for the poorest few to scavenge them.
There is a good reason that salvage yards keep armed guards on site.”
Advisor Trionne nodded. “Indeed. I’ve seen more than one vagrant take a good thumping for trying to steal raw materials from the salvage yards.
If they could get their hands on a magitech fireplace insert with a damaged log but a functional orb, it would make their whole year, and their family would likely pass it down for generations.”
Dominic rolled out a thin sheet of clay with a rolling pin, and transmuted it to copper. Then he took out a template and marked the pieces for the orb before starting any of the other work.
“I believe that you’re all familiar with the basic process?” He asked.
“Of course. In fact, the only one who doesn’t know the most basic fire creation orb design is likely Trionne, and that’s because a Techno Witch’s methods are different.”
“That makes things easier. I’m not sure if you’ll understand the changes, they’re subtle, but I will make an orb and show you just why it’s so inexpensive for us to make them when we’re using hired employees instead of outside specialist Techno Wizards.” Dominic explained.
Once the runes were carved, Dominic motioned to Amie, who laughed and created him a small ruby.
“She’s much better at creating gems than I am. I’ve learned the basics of making them and mana crystals, but I really should practice more. We have taught the staff at the factory to make lower grade gems for the purpose. They don’t determine the mana use, only the maximum output, and we’re just trying to make a fireplace, not a forge or a tactical weapon.
Now, with that in place, we bend the pieces and interlock them, then test the connections before we solder the joints with copper rod and do a final check.
It activates, so it’s ready to be inserted into whatever object needs to create fire.
Alternately, you can use a Spell Gem of [Create Campfire], which is also a spell that I know. It’s a simple utility spell, and an unbonded level zero spell gem is enough for the fireplace insert.”
“You say that you know the spell. Were you classically trained as a mage?”
Dominic smiled, while Amie laughed.
The little mage leaned over to whisper conspiratorially, loud enough for everyone to hear.
“He’s got a sorcerer’s spellbook, so all his spells cast at the level of the book. It’s like being a skilled mage, but while still having a Blacksmith’s Trade Skill Core.”
