The Wolf God's Unwanted Luna
Chapter 282: Starlit Promises
Vivian’s POV
Smooth stone tiles stretched out in a narrow path right before me, each side lined with flickering candles that gave the night an almost reverent stillness. At the end of that glowing trail stood a small house quiet and unassuming. Its exterior was painted a muted blue-gray, edged with dark black trim. The front door faced us directly, a match in tone to the dark wooden roof overhead. Modest in size, simple in design... yet somehow, it felt like it carried an immense amount of weight. Like the air itself shifted around it, thick with unspoken meaning. It looked lonely, but it felt undeniably strong.
"I used to come here when I needed space... away from the noise, away from everyone," Zahliver murmured softly beside me, his voice heavy with memory. "Being the pack Alpha wears on you much more than you would ever think possible."
"And what about now?" I asked under my breath, still staring intently at the little house. Something about it made my chest tighten in a strange way. It clearly meant a whole lot more to him than he was letting on with his words. I could feel it radiating off him. And gods above, why was my heart suddenly racing so fast?
His warm hand settled firmly on my back, steady and grounding. "And now, I am not so sure. Why don’t you go on inside and find out for yourself?"
With a gentle nudge, he urged me forward down the path.
We walked together in quiet silence. As we finally reached the heavy front door, his arm shifted, and one hand reached around to twist the brass knob. His broad chest brushed lightly against my back, and I could feel it his heartbeat. It was fast. Unsteady. Deeply alive.
The wooden door creaked open, and I stepped inside. He followed closely behind me, the door clicking shut softly in its frame, cloaking the entryway in shadows. I waited for a wall switch to flick on, but nothing happened. Instead, the ceiling directly above us slowly parted, revealing the vast, endless stretch of the night sky overhead. Countless stars spilled their bright light straight into the room, bathing everything in a soft, silver glow. I froze in place, my eyes wide with wonder, while right behind me I heard something heavy drop to the floor a soft thump followed by the quiet rustle of movement. I did not turn around to look. The open sky had me completely entranced. We were positioned close enough to the beach that the view was totally unfiltered, and the night had dressed up in its finest for us.
When I finally looked away from the stars, I let my eyes roam slowly across the interior of the house. Just as I had thought, it was small. Cozy. The living room and tiny kitchen shared the same open space, and beyond a low dividing wall, I assumed the bedroom lay tucked away in privacy. Shelves lined with old books, a small wooden desk, a comfortable couch, a few end tables... all the basic necessities were there, but there were no modern electronics. No glowing screens. No background music. Just this profound stillness. Just the two of us.
I turned my head to ask him something maybe about the glass ceiling or the sparkling stars but the words caught completely in my throat.
Zahliver was down on one knee.
I froze.
My breath hitched sharply in my lungs, and my feet refused to move. I was not ready for this my chaotic heart definitely was not ready but my body stubbornly refused to back away. Every single emotion I had ever known seemed to surge through my veins all at once, overwhelming and confusing me. Some of those heavy feelings did not even feel like they were entirely mine.
I did not know what to do with my hands. Should I cover my mouth in shock? Reach down toward him? Clap? Cry? Instead, I just stood there like a statue, my arms hanging slack at my sides, as if my limbs had completely forgotten how to function.
Then he looked up at me. And those eyes... those fierce, ocean-deep eyes that I had come to love so deeply held mine in a way that stole the breath right out of my lungs. They were so intense. So wonderfully sure. If it had been literally any other ordinary moment in my life, I might have actually fainted right there on the floor.
"Vivian Grey," he began, his voice low, steady, but completely unwavering. "Getting us here was not an easy road. Mostly because of my own mistakes. But if I had to go back and do it all over again, I would. Every single step, every single mistake, if it ultimately brought me right to you."
A sharp ache blossomed in my chest.
"You are the most stubborn, fiery, inappropriately hilarious, and confusingly wonderful female I have ever met in my entire life," he went on, the corners of his lips tilting upward into a faint, affectionate smile. "But you are mine. And I have fallen completely for all of that and for everything you carry hidden inside you. The beauty of your pure heart. Your sharp sarcasm. The way you care about others even when you pretend you do not."
I swallowed hard past the lump in my throat, my hands trembling slightly at my sides.
"I have spent the vast majority of my life surrounded by darkness. By death. By absolute power. And yet... somehow, with you standing by my side, I have never felt more alive. More truly whole. You have brought brilliant color into places I honestly thought would stay cold and gray forever."
He paused for a second, taking a slow, deep breath. "I am a deeply selfish man, Vivian. The whole pack knows that about me. I have taken things, claimed things that were never truly mine to begin with. But tonight... I am not taking anything by force. I am asking."
He looked straight up into my face, his expression completely open, deeply vulnerable, and utterly raw.
And my heart my stubborn, scared, frantically beating heart felt like it had finally, finally found its true home.
Hot tears blurred my vision before I could even fully process the meaning of his words. My heart clenched hard at how soft and uncertain Zahliver’s deep voice had suddenly become sounding so entirely unlike the fierce, unyielding Alpha I had come to know. Pure vulnerability radiated off his massive frame in thick waves, each individual syllable carrying the immense weight of all his hidden hopes and quiet fears.
"Will you become mine in every way possible, and allow me to introduce you to the world not just as my mate, but as my legal wife, the future mother of my children, and the only woman whom I could ever love and live with forever?"
"Will you marry me?"
