The Viltrumite Across the Worlds
Chapter 300: Brother vs Brother
As the Kent Group's private jet landed, Jonathan and his family stepped off the plane and stared at the unfamiliar metropolis in amazement.
It was completely different from the countryside they had called home. Luxury cars sped along the roads, and crowds of pedestrians filled the streets.
"Where's my brother?"
After leaving the airport, Clark boarded a bus heading downtown. He leaned against the window and admired the magnificent city before him.
This was the city his heroic older brother had built.
"Your brother is right over there."
The smiling secretary pointed toward a tower that pierced the clouds. It was the tallest building in all of Metropolis, another triumph of human civilization and a structure known as the modern Tower of Babel.
Kent Tower.
"Wow, that's incredible. That building must be more than three thousand feet tall. How did they build it?"
Clark marveled at the tower.
"Mr. Jovian designed it himself."
A trace of reverence flashed through the secretary's eyes.
"Mr. Jovian is powerful and perfect. He has brought countless miraculous creations to this planet. He is like a god, a god who descended from the heavens."
"My brother really is incredible."
Clark sighed in admiration. His brother truly was unlike anyone else.
"By the way, Mr. Clark, you still don't know what the Kent Group does, do you?"
As Clark continued marveling at Jovian's achievements, the secretary suddenly remembered something and turned toward him.
"Uh…"
"I honestly don't know much about my brother's company."
Clark shook his head. He had spent most of his life working on a farm and paid little attention to affairs in major cities. Naturally, he had no idea what his extraordinary brother had been doing.
"The Kent Group is dedicated to maintaining a balance between metahumans and ordinary people. We help governments manage metahumans responsibly and deploy superheroes to unstable regions, allowing the world to move closer to genuine peace."
The beautiful secretary began explaining the greatness of the Kent Group.
"At present, the Kent Group operates across more than two hundred countries and regions. Our superhero services cover the entire world. We fight criminals, protect the vulnerable, and resolve civil unrest."
"It would be no exaggeration to say that the modern world can no longer function without the Kent Group or Mr. Jovian."
"The world needs Mr. Jovian."
"Oh…"
Clark nodded.
He had always known that his brother was impressive, but he had never understood just how influential Jovian had become.
Now he knew, and he sincerely admired him.
"I can't wait to see him. I'm going to become a superhero too and fight criminals!"
Clark grew excited. He could already imagine himself wearing a suit and soaring through the sky.
It would be amazing.
Meanwhile, as Clark, Jonathan, and the others traveled toward Kent Tower, Jovian was speaking with several guests.
They were among the wealthiest people in Metropolis, and even in the entire United States.
"I understand your situation."
"I'll help you resolve the problem."
Jovian stood before an enormous floor-to-ceiling window with his hands clasped behind his back, facing away from the people behind him as he spoke quietly.
"Thank you."
"We'll be leaving, then."
The man leading the group was one of the most famous philanthropists in the United States.
The reason he had sought Jovian's help was simple. Some of his workers had gone on strike, and he wanted Jovian to deal with the organizers.
As for why the philanthropist did not handle them himself, it was because he was not permitted to do so.
Had he punished the workers without first reporting the matter to Kent Tower, Kent Tower would have dealt with him instead.
"Very well."
Jovian nodded without saying anything more.
This clearly was not the first time he had handled such a matter.
Jovian had no intention of stopping these wealthy men from going too far. After all, only darkness could emphasize the greatness of light and justice.
Once darkness disappeared, light would no longer seem so sacred.
Ever since Jovian established himself in Metropolis, the city's light had grown increasingly brilliant. At the same time, the darkness lurking in its hidden corners had become even deeper.
In Jovian's eyes, this was inevitable.
"Jovian."
While Jovian admired the scenery outside the window, a friendly voice called out from behind him.
A muscular man in a white bodysuit entered the office. He had dark hair and a powerful build.
"Mark."
Jovian did not turn around. He already knew who had arrived.
"The situation in the East has been handled."
Mark folded his arms across his chest, his expression calm.
He was no longer the inexperienced boy who had once understood nothing. He had endured far too much and had gradually come to understand the decisions made by his father and his brother.
"Excellent. Go welcome Clark. He's your new brother."
Jovian turned and addressed Mark.
"I know. I'd also like to see how powerful this world's chosen one really is."
Mark seemed eager to test him. He rolled his shoulders before leaving Jovian's office.
At the same time, Clark, Jonathan, and Martha entered the twelve-hundred-meter tower, a building that rose like a man-made mountain.
"This is amazing!"
The moment Clark entered the building, he stared at everything around him and repeatedly exclaimed in wonder.
"Of course. Mr. Jovian personally designed everything here, including the building's entire aesthetic."
The secretary followed beside Clark with a smile.
"Really?"
As Clark admired his surroundings, a figure moving in a hurry suddenly collided with him.
"Ugh!"
Clark was instantly knocked to the floor.
"Watch where you're going, kid."
The newcomer was Mark, dressed in his white bodysuit. He examined Clark with a critical gaze.
"Is that how you act after knocking someone over?"
Annoyed, Clark stood and confronted him.
"That's exactly how I act. It always has been."
"What's the matter, kid? Do you have a problem with it?"
Mark had clearly come looking for trouble.
"Inside this tower, you have to earn everything yourself. I'm not going to treat you differently because of who you are."
"If you want other people's respect, prove that you deserve it."
Mark glared at Clark.
"It looks like we're going to have to fight."
Clark loosened his shoulders, showing no concern that he might lose to Mark.
"Uh…"
"Mr. and Mrs. Kent, Mr. Jovian is waiting for both of you upstairs. Please come with us."
The secretary quickly understood what was happening. As soon as Mark appeared, she began guiding Jonathan and Martha toward the elevator.
"But Clark…"
Jonathan and Martha were clearly worried about their younger son.
"He'll be fine. This is only a test."
"Mr. Jovian must have heard about Clark's dream of becoming a superhero and sent someone to give him some training. There's nothing to worry about."
The secretary ushered Jonathan and Martha into the elevator. Once they were inside, she shot Mark a sharp glare.
"Heh."
Mark gave her an apologetic look before gripping Clark's shoulder with one hand.
"Come with me, kid."
Mark and Clark instantly disappeared from the building.
Their speed surpassed the limits of human vision. Had the violent gust created by their departure not knocked everyone nearby off balance, it would have been difficult to believe that two people had been standing there only a moment earlier.
Mark brought Clark to the summit of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world.
This was also the place where Mark himself had once undergone training.
"All right, kid. Let's see what you can do."
Mark pushed aside his memories and frowned at Clark.
"Wait, are you like us?"
"Are you an alien too?"
Clark had no interest in fighting. He stared at Mark in excitement.
He had originally believed that only he and Jovian were special. Now it seemed that the world was home to countless extraordinary beings.
"Something like that."
"Now attack me, kid."
Mark gave Clark an ambiguous answer, then extended a finger and beckoned him forward provocatively.
"Be careful. I've never met anyone who could match me before."
Clark assumed a fighting stance and threw a punch at Mark.
"Too slow."
"Far too slow."
Mark floated casually in midair as Clark continued swinging his fists.
Not a single blow landed.
Mark danced through the air like a butterfly flying freely through an open field.
"You're too weak."
After Clark missed several hundred punches, Mark finally moved. He caught Clark's fist with one hand and shook his head.
"What?"
Clark's face went pale.
This was the first time in his life that anyone had stopped one of his punches.
Smack!
Before Clark could react, Mark's fist struck him in the face.
A series of sonic booms erupted as Clark shot through the air like a cannonball and crashed into the snowy mountain behind him.
The violent impact instantly triggered a massive avalanche.
"That's it?"
Mark raised an eyebrow as he watched Clark disappear into the snow.
A red beam of heat vision suddenly tore through the avalanche and shot toward him.
"What?"
Mark instinctively raised both arms to block it.
He was not worried that Clark might sever them. Mark had once fought inside the heart of the sun. This level of damage was insignificant by comparison.
Even so, Clark's unusual heat vision still caused him considerable pain.
The beams burned Mark's arms.
"Good. Not bad at all."
"You've officially pissed me off."
Mark examined his burned arms before launching himself forward like a cannonball and crashing into the avalanche.
Boom!
Thunderous explosions and endless sonic booms shook the mountain.
Clark's body was driven straight through the peak and blasted out the other side. Blood spilled from his mouth as he struggled to regain his balance in midair.
Mark flew after him like an arrow.
Clark had no intention of waiting helplessly. He fired his heat vision at Mark again.
Mark was already prepared.
He tilted his body to one side and easily avoided the beams.
"Damn it."
Clark cursed and repeatedly adjusted his aim, but no matter where he directed his heat vision, he could not hit Mark.
The difference between their reaction speeds was enormous.
"Clark, you have far too much left to learn!"
Another series of sonic booms erupted as Mark appeared directly in front of Clark and punched him in the face.
"Ugh!"
Clark spat blood and plummeted toward a nearby peak.
Boom!
The snow covering the mountaintop was blasted away when Clark crashed into it.
"Ugh…"
Clark staggered to his feet and looked up at Mark, doing his best to maintain a fighting stance.
"You have potential, Clark, but you're nowhere near ready."
"You aren't strong enough, you aren't fast enough, and your reactions are too slow. Even your heat vision lacks power."
"In your current state, you could never become a competent hero. Go to school and focus on your education."
Mark was teaching Clark in the same way Jovian had taught him years earlier.
"I can still fight!"
Blood continued flowing from Clark's wounds, staining the white snow beneath him red.
"Clark, you still don't understand."
"In that case, I'll make you understand."
Mark attacked Clark once again.
Boom!
A deafening sonic boom erupted as the two clashed violently.
On the top floor of Kent Tower, Jovian was having lunch with Jonathan and Martha.
"Jovian, when we entered the building, a very strong man took Clark away. Is he going to be all right?"
Martha was clearly worried about Clark and directly asked her eldest son about him.
"Don't worry. He doesn't mean Clark any harm."
"I imagine he's calmly teaching Clark the most basic qualities required of a hero."
"I know Clark has always wanted to follow my example and become a superhero, but being a hero is exhausting and troublesome."
"Clark needs to understand what he'll have to sacrifice if he chooses that path."
Jovian smiled at Jonathan and Martha.
"I see."
After hearing their eldest son's explanation, Martha and Jonathan gradually calmed down.
Meanwhile, Mark held the still inexperienced Clark off the ground by his throat with one hand.
"Clark, do you understand what a superhero needs now?"
"What does a superhero need?"
Clark stared at Mark in confusion. He no longer had enough strength to fight back.
"Power."
"As long as you possess enough power, you can destroy anything you don't like."
Mark calmly instructed Clark.
