The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 37: The Chosen Vessel
Captain Rowan Hale stood at the center of the battlefield.
The soldiers around him had raised their weapons, but none dared to attack.
A violet mark covered his chest.
It looked like a black heart surrounded by a silver circle, yet it pulsed with the rhythm of something far older than human life.
Rowan’s eyes were no longer brown.
They had become silver.
A voice spoke through him.
**You were created to be my successor.**
Ethan Vale tightened his grip around the black sword.
The First Sovereign had found a vessel.
Not the strongest mage.
Not the oldest bloodline.
Not a fragment bearer.
A soldier who had chosen to follow him without being forced.
A man who had lowered his weapon when everyone else was still willing to fight.
The First Sovereign had chosen him because his decision had been genuine.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Rowan."
The captain’s head tilted.
For a brief moment, his own expression returned.
"Ethan..."
Then the violet mark expanded.
The First Sovereign’s presence filled the battlefield.
**Do not call him.**
"Why?"
**Because he is no longer alone.**
"You are using him."
**I am continuing him.**
Rowan’s hand moved toward his sword.
Ethan raised his own blade.
"Everyone, back away."
The soldiers hesitated.
Rowan looked at them.
His silver eyes held no anger.
That made the situation worse.
If the First Sovereign had possessed him through violence, the soldiers might have attacked without hesitation.
But Rowan still looked like their captain.
Still wore the same armor.
Still carried the same sword.
The only difference was the presence inside him.
A soldier stepped forward.
"Captain?"
Rowan turned toward him.
The violet mark pulsed.
The soldier dropped to his knees.
Not because he had been commanded.
Because his Mana Core recognized something ancient.
The First Sovereign looked at Ethan through Rowan’s face.
**Your fragments are incomplete.**
Ethan felt them respond inside his soul.
The Crown.
The Witness.
Knowledge.
The Sword.
The White Flame.
The Sixth Prison.
The Identity.
The Eighth.
The Ninth.
All of them were present, but none had fully recovered from the battle.
The First Sovereign knew it.
It had chosen its moment carefully.
"You are not taking him," Ethan said.
**You have no authority over him.**
"He chose to fight beside me."
**He chose to obey you.**
"Those are not the same thing."
The First Sovereign’s silver eyes turned toward the soldiers.
**He followed because he needed a purpose.**
Rowan’s fingers tightened around his sword.
**I gave him one.**
Ethan watched Rowan carefully.
The captain was still inside his body.
Still aware.
Still fighting.
His heartbeat was irregular, but it had not stopped.
"Rowan," Ethan said. "Listen to me."
The captain’s eyes moved toward him.
For one moment, the violet light faded.
"Do not..."
His voice broke.
"Do not let it..."
The First Sovereign forced its way forward.
**Silence.**
Rowan’s body jerked.
A wave of violet energy burst from him and threw the nearest soldiers across the ground.
Elena Frost raised a wall of ice.
The energy shattered it immediately.
She stumbled backward.
Ethan caught her arm.
"He is resisting."
"For how long?"
"Not long enough."
Professor Aurelia Voss approached, her staff glowing weakly.
"Can you remove the Sovereign?"
"Not without killing Rowan."
"Then we need to separate them."
Ethan looked at the mark on Rowan’s chest.
The First Sovereign had not entered Rowan’s soul completely.
It was attached through the black heart symbol.
The symbol was a door.
A small one.
But it was connected to the same network Ethan had severed.
If he cut the connection, he might save Rowan.
Or he might tear open the Door inside his body.
"What do you see?" Elena asked.
Ethan activated the Witness.
The battlefield disappeared.
He saw Rowan’s soul.
It was bright, ordinary, and deeply tired.
Memories moved around it.
A village.
A younger brother.
A mother waiting beside a window.
Years of military training.
The moment Rowan chose to follow Ethan.
The choice had not been made out of worship.
Rowan had followed because Ethan had admitted uncertainty.
Because he had refused to command them.
Because he had allowed them to choose.
The First Sovereign had noticed that.
It had entered through the moment of trust.
A dark root now wrapped around Rowan’s soul.
The root was not controlling his memories.
It was using his choice as an anchor.
Ethan understood the danger.
If he cut the root directly, he would also damage the memory of Rowan’s choice.
The First Sovereign had made consent into a chain.
A voice spoke inside Ethan’s mind.
**You cannot save him without destroying the reason he was chosen.**
Ethan looked at Rowan’s soul.
*Then I will save both.*
**You cannot.**
*I have heard that before.*
Ethan returned to the battlefield.
Rowan had drawn his sword.
The violet energy around him formed a second armor.
The soldiers backed away.
Noah Blake stood beside Elena, gripping his knife.
"Can the knife help?"
"Possibly."
"Possibly is becoming your favorite word."
"It is accurate."
"Then give me a more useful one."
Ethan looked at the mark on Rowan’s chest.
"Recognition."
Noah nodded.
"What do I recognize?"
"Rowan."
Noah frowned.
"He is standing right there."
"Not the vessel. The person."
Noah stepped forward.
The First Sovereign turned Rowan toward him.
**Stay away.**
Noah ignored it.
"Captain Rowan Hale."
The silver eyes flickered.
"You hate boiled cabbage."
The soldiers stared at him.
Noah continued:
"You pretend you do not, but you always trade it to the youngest soldier at dinner."
Rowan’s fingers trembled.
The violet armor cracked.
"You have a sister who sends you terrible poems every winter."
The captain’s lips moved.
No sound came out.
"You once fell asleep during a strategy meeting and blamed the chair."
A faint brown color returned to one of Rowan’s eyes.
The First Sovereign released a wave of violet force.
Noah was thrown backward.
Ethan caught him.
Noah coughed.
"That was working."
"Yes."
"Then I will continue."
"You are not strong enough to stand near him."
"I noticed."
Elena stepped forward.
"I know another memory."
She looked at Rowan.
"You joined the army because your brother was taken by a magical beast."
Rowan’s silver eyes shook.
"You blamed yourself for surviving."
The violet mark cracked.
"You promised his grave that you would never abandon another person."
Rowan’s sword dropped slightly.
The First Sovereign spoke through him.
**These memories are irrelevant.**
Elena’s voice sharpened.
"They are the reason he is resisting you."
The Sovereign’s energy expanded.
A black heart appeared behind Rowan.
It was enormous.
A second Door.
The edges of reality bent around it.
Professor Voss raised her staff.
"Ethan, now!"
Ethan moved.
The black sword formed in his hand.
He crossed the battlefield in a single step.
The First Sovereign struck with Rowan’s sword.
Ethan blocked.
The impact sent violet sparks across the ground.
Rowan’s body was stronger than before, but his technique remained human.
Ethan used that weakness.
He shifted his weight and redirected the blade.
The black sword touched the mark on Rowan’s chest.
The First Sovereign reacted immediately.
**Do not cut the heart.**
Ethan smiled coldly.
"I was not planning to."
He cut the shadow behind it.
The connection between Rowan and the black heart split.
The violet Door flickered.
The First Sovereign screamed through Rowan’s body.
A shockwave tore across the battlefield.
Ethan was thrown backward.
Rowan collapsed.
Elena caught him before he struck the ground.
The black heart remained suspended behind him.
It was no longer connected to Rowan.
But it had not disappeared.
The First Sovereign’s consciousness moved into the heart.
A faceless figure formed inside the violet light.
**You have separated the vessel.**
Ethan stood slowly.
"Yes."
**Then the vessel will die.**
Rowan’s body began to fade.
His Mana Core was losing its connection to the world.
Professor Voss rushed toward him.
"His life force is dropping!"
Ethan looked at the black heart.
The First Sovereign was using Rowan’s severed connection to pull his soul apart.
If Ethan destroyed the heart, Rowan would die.
If he restored the connection, the Sovereign would possess him again.
The First Sovereign spoke:
**Choose, Ethan Vale.**
Ethan looked at Rowan.
The captain’s eyes opened.
His voice was weak.
"Do not... put it back."
"You will die."
"I know."
"You chose to follow me."
"I chose... to help."
His breathing became shallow.
"Do not let it use that choice."
Ethan stared at him.
The First Sovereign was offering the same trap again.
A sacrifice.
One person dying so the rest could live.
The Sword Fragment pulsed inside Ethan.
The Ninth Fragment responded.
The Crown offered command.
The Identity offered recognition.
Ethan understood.
The First Sovereign believed every choice had to produce one victim.
That was the logic of the old world.
The same logic Veyron had used.
The same logic Ethan had once accepted.
Ethan stepped toward the black heart.
"I refuse."
The First Sovereign’s faceless form shifted.
**You cannot save him.**
"I do not need to save him alone."
Ethan turned toward the soldiers.
"Those who know Captain Rowan—step forward."
The soldiers looked at one another.
One woman approached.
"His name is Rowan Hale."
A man beside her followed.
"He saved my life at Hollow Ridge."
Another soldier stepped forward.
"He taught me how to hold a sword."
A fourth raised his voice.
"He never abandoned the wounded."
More soldiers approached.
Each spoke a memory.
Each named something Rowan had chosen.
The black heart trembled.
The First Sovereign tried to push them back.
But the soldiers’ memories formed a network.
Not a magical command.
A shared recognition.
The same principle that had strengthened the Identity Fragment.
Rowan’s soul stopped fading.
His Mana Core began to stabilize.
The First Sovereign’s connection to him weakened further.
Ethan raised the black sword.
The blade changed into a thin line of silver and violet.
He did not cut Rowan.
He cut the black heart.
The Sword entered the violet Door.
The First Sovereign screamed.
The heart split open.
Inside it was not an organ.
It was a small, dark child.
The child had violet eyes.
Its face resembled Ethan.
But it was younger than the Identity Fragment.
The First Sovereign had preserved its original consciousness in the form of a child.
The child looked at Ethan.
"You were made from me."
Ethan lowered the sword.
"I know."
"You cannot destroy me."
"I am not trying to."
The child tilted its head.
"Then what do you want?"
"To return what you stole."
Ethan reached into the broken heart.
The child’s expression changed.
The First Sovereign tried to pull away, but the shared memories of the soldiers held the Door open.
Ethan touched the child’s chest.
A violet thread connected it to Rowan.
Ethan pulled the thread free.
The child screamed.
The black heart collapsed.
The violet thread entered Ethan’s hand.
The First Sovereign’s consciousness was no longer inside Rowan.
It was no longer inside the heart.
It was connected to Ethan.
The child stood before him, small and trembling.
The battlefield disappeared.
Ethan found himself in a white space.
The First Sovereign stood across from him.
It no longer had a giant body.
No network.
No army.
No fragments.
Only a child’s face and ancient eyes.
"You have taken my connection."
"I have taken it away from Rowan."
"You cannot hold it."
"I do not intend to."
"Then where will you put me?"
Ethan looked at the child.
"Inside the First Door."
The Sovereign’s eyes widened.
"You would send me back?"
"You created the Door."
"It was built to imprison me."
"It was built to contain you."
"I am the source of magic."
"You are the source of the first magic."
"That is the same thing."
"No."
Ethan raised his hand.
The eight fragments appeared around him.
The Ninth Fragment formed a dark circle beneath his feet.
The Identity Fragment created a boundary around the child.
"You will remain connected to the world."
The Sovereign smiled.
"Then I will always return."
"Connected, but not in control."
The child’s smile disappeared.
"You cannot change what I am."
"No."
Ethan stepped forward.
"But I can change what you are allowed to do."
The First Sovereign attacked.
The white space erupted.
Ethan raised the Crown.
The Sovereign ignored it.
He raised Knowledge.
The Sovereign shattered the spell.
He raised the Sword.
The Sovereign stopped the blade.
Then Ethan used the Ninth Fragment.
The consequences of every choice made by the First Sovereign returned to it.
The creation of the first vessel.
The manipulation of bloodlines.
The opening of the First Door.
The corruption of the Observer.
The attempt to claim the world.
All of it entered the child.
The First Sovereign screamed.
"You cannot judge me!"
"I am not judging you."
Ethan forced the memories into the boundary.
"I am making you remember."
The Witness opened.
The First Sovereign saw everything it had done.
Not as a creator.
Not as an ancient power.
As a being making choices.
The child fell to its knees.
For the first time, it looked afraid.
Ethan placed his hand over its heart.
"You are not the world."
The boundary tightened.
"You are not its owner."
The First Sovereign’s body began to break into violet light.
"You are not its destiny."
The First Door appeared behind it.
Ethan pushed the child toward the opening.
"You are its origin."
The child reached for him.
"You are like me."
Ethan looked at the ancient face.
"That is why I know what you are capable of."
He pushed once more.
"And why I refuse to become you."
The First Sovereign crossed the threshold.
The First Door closed behind it.
The white space shattered.
Ethan returned to the battlefield.
The black heart was gone.
Rowan lay on the ground, breathing weakly.
The violet mark had disappeared from his chest.
Elena was beside him.
"He is alive."
Ethan knelt.
Rowan opened his eyes.
"Did we win?"
"No."
Rowan frowned.
"That is becoming a habit."
"But you survived."
"Then... we won."
Noah crouched beside them.
"He has a point."
The soldiers began to lower their weapons.
The battlefield was silent again.
The First Sovereign had been forced back behind the Door.
Its connection to the world had been restricted.
But Ethan could still feel it.
A faint presence beneath every Mana Core.
Not controlling.
Watching.
Waiting.
Veyron approached.
"You sent it back."
"For now."
"You gave it a boundary."
"A prison."
"It will hate you."
"It already did."
Veyron looked at Rowan.
"You saved the vessel."
"No," Ethan said.
"The soldiers did."
Veyron studied him.
"You are changing the way power works."
"I am trying."
"That is dangerous."
"Everything worth doing is."
The broken gate beneath the battlefield began to close.
Before it disappeared, a final symbol appeared in the stone.
A violet circle with a black heart inside.
The mark of the First Sovereign.
Then a message formed beneath it:
**ORIGIN CONTAINED.**
**SUCCESSOR UNCONFIRMED.**
Ethan stared at the words.
The First Sovereign had been contained.
But the system still believed he was its successor.
The battlefield began to settle.
The armies were no longer enemies.
The false king was gone.
The Eighth and Ninth Fragments were quiet.
The First Door was closed.
For the first time in a long while, the world had a moment to breathe.
Then the White Flame appeared above the eastern horizon.
Princess Lyra’s voice reached Ethan through the magical network.
"Ethan."
He looked toward the light.
"What happened?"
"The Royal Palace is under attack."
"By whom?"
Lyra’s voice trembled.
"We do not know."
A second voice entered the connection.
Seraphina Crow.
"The Observer has returned."
Ethan looked at the sealed gate.
The First Sovereign was contained.
But the Observer had never been behind the First Door alone.
Seraphina continued:
"It is not attacking the palace."
"What is it doing?"
A pause followed.
Then she answered:
"It is looking for something."
The White Flame above the horizon turned black.
Every fragment inside Ethan’s soul reacted.
The Crown.
The Witness.
Knowledge.
The Sword.
The Fifth.
The Sixth.
The Seventh.
The Eighth.
The Ninth.
All of them pointed toward the same place.
The Royal Palace.
Seraphina’s voice became quiet.
"It has found the final vessel."
Ethan looked at Elena.
Then at Veyron.
Then at Rowan, who was still too weak to stand.
The First Sovereign had chosen a vessel.
But the Observer had found another.
And this time, the vessel was not a soldier.
It was Princess Lyra Aurelian.
