The Villain's Karma System

Chapter 36: The Fifth

  • Next Chapter

The final chain broke.

For a moment—

nothing happened.

No explosion.

No earthquake.

No scream.

Nothing.

Kael stood at the edge of the abyss, the silver key clenched tightly in his hand.

The academy had gone completely dark.

Not merely without light.

The darkness itself felt unnatural.

It swallowed the glow from Elena’s magic.

It consumed Leon’s sword.

Even the faint illumination coming from the ancient runes beneath Aetheris had disappeared.

Kael couldn’t see his own hand.

Then—

a single point of white light appeared.

Below.

Two white eyes.

Then a third.

A fourth.

Kael’s breathing stopped.

Those weren’t eyes.

They were reflections.

The Fifth was standing somewhere beneath them.

And whatever it was—

it had brought the darkness with it.

"Kael."

Elena’s voice came from behind him.

"I’m here."

"Where?"

"Right behind you."

Kael reached backward.

His hand found hers.

Warm.

Real.

He exhaled.

Good.

At least his friends were still here.

"Everyone?"

Leon answered.

"Here."

"Mira?"

"Still alive."

"Lucien?"

"I’ve had better evenings."

Kael almost laughed.

"Second?"

Silence.

Kael’s expression changed.

"Second?"

Nothing.

"Third?"

Again—

silence.

Kael turned.

He could barely see anything.

"Second!"

A faint voice came from the darkness.

"Don’t move."

Kael froze.

"Why?"

"Because something is standing behind you."

Kael’s entire body went rigid.

He slowly turned his head.

Nothing.

Then—

Pi growled.

"Pi."

Kael looked down.

The little creature was staring at the darkness behind him.

Its two eyes were glowing.

Not gold.

Not black.

White.

Kael whispered.

"Pi."

Pi’s tiny body trembled.

Then it pointed.

Behind Kael.

Kael looked.

A silhouette stood there.

Tall.

Thin.

Motionless.

Kael’s fingers tightened around the Return Key.

"Who are you?"

The silhouette didn’t answer.

Instead—

it stepped forward.

One foot.

Then another.

The darkness around it seemed to move with it.

Kael raised his hand.

"Karma."

Threads of golden energy appeared.

They illuminated the area.

The silhouette vanished.

Kael’s eyes widened.

"What?"

Leon raised his sword.

"Where did it go?"

Mira activated a spatial detection spell.

"I can’t detect anything."

Lucien’s voice became serious.

"Because it isn’t there."

Kael frowned.

"What?"

Lucien looked at him.

"It isn’t standing behind you."

He pointed toward Kael’s shadow.

"It’s standing inside your shadow."

Kael looked down.

His shadow was moving.

But he wasn’t.

The shadow slowly lifted its head.

Kael stepped backward.

The shadow smiled.

Then—

CRACK

The ground beneath him split.

Kael fell.

"KAEL!"

Elena grabbed his wrist.

Leon grabbed Elena.

Mira grabbed Leon.

For several seconds, the entire group hung above the abyss.

Kael looked down.

The darkness beneath them was gone.

Instead-

he saw a city.

A burning city.

Buildings collapsing.

People running.

Aetheris Academy standing in the distance.

But it wasn’t the current Aetheris.

It was older.

Damaged.

Destroyed.

Kael’s heart tightened.

"I’ve seen this."

Mira looked down.

"What?"

Kael couldn’t answer.

He recognized the city.

Not because he’d visited it.

Because he’d lost it.

A memory surfaced.

His previous life.

No.

Something before his previous life.

He had stood here.

He had watched the city burn.

He had failed to save it.

Then—

another image appeared.

Leon.

Dead.

Elena.

Gone.

Mira.

Crying.

Lucien.

Falling.

Pi—

disappearing.

Kael’s breathing became ragged.

"No."

The vision changed.

He saw himself standing alone.

The same silver key in his hand.

And the Fifth standing before him.

The masked figure spoke.

"You can’t save them all."

Kael’s younger self answered.

"Then I’ll save the ones I can."

The Fifth laughed.

"That’s why you failed."

The vision vanished.

Kael returned to reality.

Elena was still holding his hand.

"Kael!"

He blinked.

"I’m here."

She looked relieved.

"What happened?"

"I saw..."

He stopped.

He didn’t know how to explain it.

He had seen a future.

A memory.

Or perhaps both.

The System appeared.

[Temporal overlap detected.]

[Current worldline and previous failed worldline are intersecting.]

[Warning.]

[Host is viewing a possibility that has already occurred.]

[Contradiction detected.]

[Possible explanation: The worldline has failed before.]

Kael stared at the notification.

A cold realization settled over him.

The black book.

Lucien’s research.

The failed worlds.

The endings that refused to remain ended.

They weren’t possibilities.

They had happened.

Over and over.

Kael looked toward Lucien.

"Professor."

Lucien understood immediately.

"You saw one."

"One what?"

"A failed world."

Kael nodded.

Lucien closed his eyes.

"So it begins."

Mira looked at him.

"What begins?"

Lucien opened his eyes.

"The cycle."

A low laugh echoed beneath them.

The masked figure emerged from the darkness again.

This time—

everyone could see it.

White mask.

Black clothing.

Chains hanging from its arms

White eyes.

It stood several meters away.

Kael stared.

"You."

The Fifth tilted its head.

"Me."

"You’re the reason the world keeps failing."

"No."

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"Then what are you?"

The Fifth smiled.

"I am the reason it keeps trying."

Kael’s expression changed.

The Fifth continued.

"Every time your world reaches an ending, something remains."

"The black book?"

"One of the remnants."

"The First Story?"

"Another."

"The Author?"

"Another."

"Fourth?"

"Another."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"Then the irregularities?"

The Fifth smiled.

"Fragments."

Second suddenly appeared beside Kael.

His epression was grim.

"That’s what you are."

The Fifth looked at him.

"Yes."

Second’s fists tightened.

"You’re not Fifth."

The figure smiled.

"No."

Third stepped forward.

"Then what are you?"

The Fifth turned toward him.

"You tell me."

Third froze.

The masked figure continued.

"You’ve always been the one who doesn’t belong."

Third’s expression hardened.

"Neither do you."

"No."

The Fifth looked toward Kael.

"But he does."

Kael frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The Fifth pointed toward him.

"You think you’re the outsider."

Kael said nothing.

"You think you were inserted into this world."

The Fifth’s white eyes gleamed.

"You think you’re the one who doesn’t belong."

Kael tightened his grip around the key.

"Am I not?"

The Fifth shook its head.

"No."

It pointed at the ground.

"You’re the reason this place exists."

Silence.

Kael’s mind went blank.

"What?"

The Fifth continued.

"You didn’t enter the cycle."

"You started it."

The words struck harder than any attack.

Leon stepped forward.

"That’s impossible."

The Fifth looked at him.

"Is it?"

Leon raised his sword.

"Kael didn’t create this world."

"I never said he did."

Leon hesitated.

The Fifth turned back to Kael.

"He created the question."

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"What question?"

The Fifth answered softly.

"Can a story choose its own ending?"

Silence.

Kael remembered.

The white room.

The black door.

The countless stories.

The First Story.

The Author.

The irregularities.

Everything.

His memories were connected by one idea.

A story that refused to end.

Kael whispered.

"I asked that."

The Fifth nodded.

"And the world answered."

Kael’s expression darkened.

"By failing."

"Yes."

"And every failure created another version."

"Yes."

"Until I returned."

The Fifth smiled.

"Until you returned."

Kael stared at the Return Key.

"So why was I brought back?"

The Fifth’s smile disappeared.

"You weren’t brought back."

Kael looked up.

"You came back."

His heart skipped.

The Fifth continued.

"No one selected you."

"No one reincarnated you."

"No one chose your soul."

"You made the decision yourself."

Kael’s mind became silent.

The Selector.

The white room.

The memory.

The promise.

It all fit.

But one question remained.

"Then who is the Selector?"

The Fifth said nothing.

Kael stepped forward.

"Who is the person behind the mask?"

Still nothing.

Kael’s voice hardened.

"Who was standing beside me when I returned?"

The Fifth finally answered.

"You already know."

Kael’s pupils contracted.

"Then tell me."

"No."

"Why?"

"Because you made that another rule."

Kael’s expression twisted.

"How many stupid rules did I make?"

The Fifth laughed.

"More than you remember.

Kael sighed.

"Wonderful."

For the first time, Elena smiled faintly.

"At least you’re consistent."

Kael looked at her.

"Was that supposed to comfort me?"

"A little."

Then—

the Return Key began glowing.

Kael looked down.

The silver metal was transforming.

Its surface became covered in ancient writing.

Words appeared.

RETURN.

REMEMBER.

CHOOSE.

Kael’s eyes widened.

The System appeared.

[Unique Item evolution detected.]

[Return Key has responded to Host’s memory.]

[Return Key → Origin Key]

[New Function unlocked.]

[Function: Open one origin-sealed truth.]

[Warning.]

[Only one use available.]

Kael stared at it.

"One use."

Lucien approached.

"Then choose carefully."

Kael looked toward the Fifth.

"What happens if I use it on you?"

The Fifth smiled.

"You’ll remember why you made me."

Kael froze.

"Made you?"

The Fifth nodded.

"You wanted someone to remain."

Kael’s breathing slowed.

"Remain after what?"

The Fifth looked toward the darkness.

"After the ending."

Kael suddenly understood.

The Fifth wasn’t the destroyer.

It wasn’t the cause of the failed worlds.

It was—

a remnant.

Something Kael had created to survive the end.

Something he had left behind.

Something he had forgotten.

Kael’s hand trembled.

"You were my..."

He couldn’t finish.

The Fifth waited.

Then—

Pi jumped from Kael’s shoulder.

"Pi!"

The creature ran toward the Fifth.

Kael’s eyes widened.

"Pi!"

Pi stopped directly in front of the masked figure.

The Fifth looked down.

For several seconds—

neither moved.

Then Pi whispered.

"Found."

The Fifth’s mask cracked.

A single fracture appeared across the white surface.

The figure staggered.

"No..."

Pi’s eyes returned to gold and black.

"Found you."

The Fifth touched its mask.

Its voice became unstable.

"You remember?"

Pi nodded.

The Fifth stepped backward.

"No."

Another crack appeared.

Then another.

"You weren’t supposed to remember."

Kael stared.

"What did Pi remember?"

The Fifth didn’t answer.

Pi turned toward Kael.

Its eyes were wet.

"Not Fifth."

Kael crouched.

"What?"

Pi pointed at the masked figure.

"Name."

Kael froze.

A name.

The Fifth had a name.

Pi was remembering it.

The System suddenly flashed.

[Critical memory interference detected.]

[Attempting to recover sealed designation...]

[Failure.]

[Failure.]

[Failure.]

[Designation protected by Host’s own authority.]

Kael stared at the final line.

"My own authority?"

The Fifth laughed.

A broken, distorted laugh.

"Even now..."

Its mask continued cracking.

"...you don’t understand."

Kael stood.

"Then explain."

The Fifth looked directly at him.

"You didn’t create me."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"You remembered me."

Silence.

"There’s a difference."

The Fifth removed its mask.

Kael saw its face.

And his entire world stopped.

It was him.

Not exactly.

But enough.

The same face.

The same eyes.

The same scar beneath the left eye.

The same expression.

Kael couldn’t breathe.

Leon stepped backward.

Mira whispered.

"Kael..."

Elena stared.

Lucien’s face went pale.

Second looked away.

Third didn’t react.

Kael stared at the figure.

"No."

The other Kael smiled sadly.

"Yes."

"You..."

"I was you."

Kael’s mind screamed.

The Fifth continued.

"Before you became the person who returned."

Kael clenched his fists.

"Then why don’t I remember you?"

"Because you couldn’t."

"Why?"

"Because one of us had to forget."

Kael’s heart sank.

"And the other?"

The Fifth looked at him.

"The other had to remember."

Kael finally understood.

The promise.

The second reason.

The Return Clause.

The Fifth hadn’t been waiting for Kael to return.

It had been waiting to return Kael’s memories.

Kael looked down at the Origin Key.

The Fifth extended its hand.

"Use it."

Kael didn’t move.

"Why?"

"Because you need to know."

"Know what?"

The Fifth smiled.

"The reason you really came back."

Kael looked at the key.

Then at his friends.

Then at Pi.

Finally—

he looked at the Fifth.

He raised the Origin Key.

But before he could use it—

the sky above Aetheris shattered.

Not cracked.

Shattered.

A familiar enormous eye appeared beyond the broken sky.

The sky entity.

It stared down at Kael.

Then another eye opened.

And another.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

All watching.

Fourth suddenly roared.

"THEY FOUND YOU."

Kael looked upward.

The Fifth smiled.

"No."

Its voice became strangely calm.

"They found us."

The System exploded with warnings.

[MULTIPLE HIGH-LEVEL AUTHORITIES DETECTED.]

[Worldline integrity: CRITICAL.]

[Aetheris integrity: 41% → 29%.]

[Foreign observation detected.]

[Return Authority: 21% → 28%.]

[Memory Recovery: 71% → 78%.]

[WARNING.]

[The Origin Key has been activated.]

[One truth will now become impossible to forget.]

Kael’s eyes widened.

The key dissolved into light.

The light entered his chest.

And suddenly—

he remembered.

Not everything.

Not his First Name.

Not the entire truth.

But one thing.

One promise.

One sentence.

A sentence he had spoken before everything began.

Kael heard his younger voice.

Clear.

Certain.

Unshaken.

"If the story can’t save them..."

A pause.

"Then I’ll become the ending that does."

Kael’s eyes widened.

The memory ended.

The Fifth smiled.

"Now you remember."

Kael stared at the shattered sky.

The watching eyes.

The broken chains.

The ancient academy.

His friends.

Pi.

Fourth.

Second.

Third.

And the thing beneath them all.

For the first time since his transmigration—

Kael understood what the System had been hiding.

He hadn’t returned because he wanted another life.

He hadn’t returned because he wanted revenge.

He hadn’t returned because he wanted to become stronger.

He had returned because—

he had already failed once.

And this time...

he had come back to finish what he started.

The Fifth stepped backward into the darkness.

Kael immediately reached for it.

"Wait!"

The Fifth smiled.

"I’ll see you at the end."

Then it vanished.

The abyss began closing.

The broken chains dissolved.

The ancient chamber disappeared.

And the academy began falling.

Kael grabbed Pi.

Leon grabbed Mira.

Elena seized Lucien.

Second and Third vanished into the collapsing darkness.

Fourth rose toward the sky.

And above them—

the countless eyes began opening wider.

Kael looked up.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Determination.

He had spent weeks trying to escape the fate written for Kael Veyron.

Now he finally understood.

That fate had never been the real problem.

The real problem—

was the ending he had already failed to prevent.

Kael tightened his grip on Pi.

"Everyone..."

Pi looked up.

"Pi?"

Kael smiled.

"This time..."

The world began collapsing around them.

"...we’re making it to the end."

And somewhere beyond the broken sky—

something laughed.

Not the Fifth.

Not Fourth.

Not the Author.

Something else.

Something that had been watching since before Kael remembered how to exist.

A final System notification appeared.
