The Villain's Karma System

Chapter 26: Before the Name

  • Next Chapter

"Welcome back."

The words echoed through the tower.

Kael stood completely still.

His hand remained wrapped around the hilt of his sword.

The voice had come from above.

From the door at the highest point of the ascending tower.

He couldn’t see the figure clearly.

Only a silhouette.

A person standing beyond the doorway.

A black quill rested between their fingers.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?"

The figure didn’t answer.

Instead, they raised the quill.

A single drop of black ink fell from its tip.

It floated downward.

Past the tower.

Past Kael.

Past the city.

Then—

Drip.

The moment it touched the ground, the entire tower stopped moving.

Silence.

Kael looked around.

"What did you do?"

The figure finally spoke.

"I stopped the climb."

Kael frowned.

"Why?"

"Because you aren’t ready to see what is above."

Kael laughed.

"You’re assuming I care."

"You do."

The figure’s voice remained calm.

"You have spent your entire existence searching for an answer to a question you didn’t know how to ask."

Kael’s expression changed.

"Don’t talk like you know me."

"I know what you were."

The figure lowered the quill.

"And I know what you chose to become."

Kael’s eyes sharpened.

"You know my First Name."

"Yes."

"You know who selected me."

"Yes."

"You know what happened before I became Kael Veyron."

"Yes."

Kael stepped forward.

"Then tell me."

The figure remained silent.

Kael’s patience disappeared.

"Tell me!"

His voice shook the tower.

Pi immediately moved closer to his leg.

The figure looked at the creature.

"Still with him."

Pi’s golden eye narrowed.

"Pi."

The figure smiled.

"Even now."

Kael noticed the reaction.

"You know Pi."

"I knew Pi before you did."

Kael’s expression hardened.

"Then answer me."

The figure turned toward the endless darkness beyond the door.

"You’re asking the wrong question."

Kael clenched his fist.

"What question should I ask?"

The figure looked back.

"Not who you were."

A pause.

"What did you choose to be?"

Kael went silent.

The words struck deeper than they should have.

He remembered the white room.

The quill.

The Selector.

The younger version of himself.

The question.

What will you call yourself?

He had remembered the answer.

But the System had refused to display it.

Why?

Because the name itself wasn’t the important part.

The choice was.

Kael slowly looked down at his hands.

"I chose..."

He stopped.

Something was wrong.

He remembered choosing the name.

He remembered holding the quill.

He remembered the Selector watching him.

But he couldn’t remember why he had chosen it.

His expression darkened.

"There’s another memory missing."

The figure nodded.

"Yes."

"What?"

"The reason."

Kael looked up.

"Why did I choose that name?"

"Yes."

"Why was it sealed?"

The figure’s expression became unreadable.

"Because you asked for it to be."

Kael froze.

"I did?"

"You did."

"Why?"

"Because you knew what would happen if you remembered."

Kael stared at the figure.

"What happens?"

The figure raised the black quill.

"The world notices you."

A cold sensation ran through Kael.

He remebered the white eyes.

The city.

The First Tower.

The Author.

The Observer.

Fourth.

The irregularities.

All of them.

Everything had been watching.

But something had been watching before all of them.

The figure continued.

"Your First Name is not merely a name."

Kael waited.

"It is an instruction."

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"An instruction for what?"

The figure smiled.

"To exist."

Silence.

Then—

BEEP.

The System appeared.

[CONCEPTUAL INFORMATION DETECTED]

First Name classification: Incomplete.

Current understanding: Identity + Authority + Instruction.

Warning: Further synchronization may permanently alter Host’s relationship with the worldline.

Kael stared at the message.

"Authority?"

The figure answered instead.

"Every name carries meaning."

"Not every name carries authority."

Kael looked up.

"Mine does."

"Yes."

"How much?"

The figure didn’t answer.

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"Enough to affect the Author?"

The figure smiled.

"Enough to frighten them."

Kael’s expression became serious.

"So that’s why the Author has been trying to erase my memories."

"Yes."

"And why the world keeps trying to assign me identities."

"Yes."

"And why Pi is important."

The figure looked toward Pi.

"Pi is not the source."

Kael frowned.

"Then what is Pi?"

The creature immediately hissed.

"Pi!"

The figure chuckled.

"Still protective."

Kael stopped between them.

"Don’t."

The figure raised both hands.

"I have no intention of harming it."

Kael stared.

"You said Pi isn’t the source."

"No."

"Then what is it?"

The figure’s gaze became distant.

"A witness."

Kael blinked.

"A witness to what?"

"To you."

That answer unsettled him more than any explanation could have.

Pi had been with him before transmigration.

It had seen him before he became Kael Veyron.

It had remembered him.

It had followed him between worlds.

It had watched him choose his name.

Pi wasn’t simply a companion.

It was proof.

Proof that Kael’s existence extended beyond the story.

Kael looked at Pi.

The creature stared back.

For once, its expression wasn’t childish.

It looked almost sad.

"Pi..."

The creature lowered its head.

Kael crouched.

"You remember everything, don’t you?"

Pi didn’t answer.

"Pi."

Its golden eye flickered.

Then—

"Before."

Kael froze.

The word was barely audible.

But clear.

"You remember."

"Pi."

"What happened before?"

Pi stared at him.

Then looked toward the figure.

The figure nodded.

Pi slowly turned back toward Kael.

And spoke another word.

"Alone."

Kael’s chest tightened.

"Before... I was alone?"

Pi nodded.

Kael frowned.

"Where?"

Pi’s mouth opened.

No sound came.

The black quill above them suddenly moved.

The figure’s expression changed.

"Enough."

Kael immediately looked upward.

"What?"

The figure raised the quill.

"Someone is listening."

The tower trembled.

A white eye appeared outside the highest window.

Then another.

Then another.

Hundreds of white eyes surrounded the tower.

Kael’s expression hardened.

"They followed us."

"No."

The figure’s voice became serious.

"They were already here."

A massive crack formed across the tower wall.

BOOM!

Kael drew his sword.

"Who are they?"

The figure looked at the eyes.

"Remnants."

"Of what?"

"Everything that came before you."

Kael’s grip tightened.

"The previous irregularities?"

"Some."

The figure looked at him.

"Not all."

The white eyes suddenly opened wider.

The tower screamed.

Not metaphorically.

The structure itself produced a sound like thousands of voices crying out at once.

The System flashed.

[EMERGENCY]

Unknown conceptual entities attempting entry.

Classification: Impossible.

Estimated threat: Unavailable.

Recommended action: Flee.

Kael stared.

"Recommended action?"

[Yes.]

"You’ve never recommended running before."

[The System is adapting.]

Kael almost laughed.

"Fair enough."

The figure turned toward the door.

"Leave."

Kael looked at them.

"What?"

"You need to return to your worldline."

"Aetheris."

"Yes."

"The academy is being erased."

"Yes."

"Then why did you bring me here?"

"I didn’t."

Kael paused.

"What?"

"You came here."

Kael’s eyes widened.

The figure continued.

"The tower responded to your First Name."

"So the tower brought me here?"

"No."

The figure looked directly at him.

"You brought yourself here."

Kael stared.

The realization hit him.

The First Name wasn’t simply an identity.

It was an ability.

A connection.

A key.

His name had allowed him to reach a place outside the worldline.

Kael smiled.

"That sounds useful."

The figure’s expression became serious.

"It is dangerous."

"Same thing."

The tower shook again.

A crack spread across the ceiling.

One of the white eyes pressed against the tower wall.

Something began pushing through.

Kael raised his sword.

"I’m not leaving until I get answers."

"You already have enough."

"I disagree."

The figure stepped toward him.

"You have recovered your First Name."

Kael looked at them.

"Partially."

"You recovered the part you were allowed to recover."

Kael frowned.

"By who?"

The figure smiled.

"By yourself."

Kael went silent.

The figure continued.

"Remember that."

Then they pointed toward the center of Kael’s chest.

"Your First Name was never given to you."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"You chose it."

"Yes."

"Then why does everyone else seem to know it?"

"Because they heard you choose it."

Kael froze.

The implication was enormous.

His First Name had existed because he had spoken it.

It wasn’t written in a book.

It wasn’t assigned by the world.

It wasn’t created by the Author.

It came from his own choice.

The figure lowered the quill.

"And that is precisely why the Author fears it."

Kael stared.

Then the tower wall exploded.

BOOOOOOM!

A white mass entered.

It had no body.

No limbs.

Only countless eyes floating inside a shifting humanoid shape.

Kael took a step back.

Pi growled.

"Pi!"

The creature turned toward Pi.

Every eye focused on the little beast.

The figure shouted:

"Do not let it touch Pi!"

Kael moved instantly.

He grabbed Pi and jumped backward.

The white creature lunged.

Kael swung his sword.

CLANG!

The blade struck the entity.

There was no blood.

No wound.

Instead, the sword passed through its body and briefly caused several eyes to vanish.

The creature recoiled.

Kael stared.

"It can be damaged."

The System responded.

[Correction.]

The entity’s observation of Host was interrupted.

Kael blinked.

"So I didn’t damage it."

[Correct.]

"Of course."

The creature attacked again.

Kael moved.

He ducked beneath the attack.

The white mass passed over him.

Kael rolled across the floor and rose.

His sword glowed faintly.

Then—

A familiar sensation.

Karma.

Threads.

Thousands of invisible lines suddenly became visible around the creature.

Kael’s eyes widened.

"I can see them."

The figure looked surprised.

"Already?"

Kael stared at the threads.

Some connected to the city.

Some to the tower.

Some extended beyond reality.

But one—

One black thread connected directly to Pi.

Kael’s expression changed.

"It’s attached to Pi."

The figure’s eyes widened.

"No."

Kael grabbed the thread.

The moment his fingers touched it—

BANG!

A memory slammed into his mind.

A white room.

Pi.

A younger Kael.

The Selector.

But there was someone else.

Standing behind them.

Someone Kael hadn’t seen before.

A figure without a face.

Holding no quill.

Wearing no mask.

Simply watching.

Then the figure leaned toward Pi.

And whispered:

"Keep him alive until he remembers."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"Who said that?"

Pi screamed.

"PI!"

The memory shattered.

Kael staggered.

The white entity recoiled.

The figure with the quill looked toward Pi.

"It’s waking up."

Kael looked at them.

"What is?"

Before they could answer—

The System appeared.

[CRITICAL DISCOVERY]

Pi’s status has changed.

Companion classification: Unknown

Previous classification: Unknown

New classification: Witness

Secondary classification: Sealed

Kael stared.

"Witness?"

The System continued.

[Pi possesses a sealed memory concerning Host’s original existence.]

[Access requirement: Host must recover First Name completely.]

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"So I need my full First Name to unlock Pi’s memories."

[Correct.]

The white entity suddenly screamed.

Every eye turned black.

The tower began collapsing.

The figure shouted:

"GO!"

Kael didn’t hesitate.

He grabbed Pi and ran.

"Second!"

No answer.

"Third!"

Nothing.

"Observer!"

Silence.

Kael looked back.

They were gone.

Everyone was gone.

Only the tower remained.

And the figure with the black quill.

Kael reached the doorway.

The figure called out.

"Kael!"

He stopped.

"Remember one thing."

Kael looked back.

The figure held the quill against their chest.

"Your First Name does not tell you who you are."

Kael waited.

"It tells the world what you refuse to become."

Kael’s eyes widened.

Then the figure smiled

"Now go."

The tower exploded.

Kael was thrown through the doorway.

---

Aetheris Academy

2 HOURS, 41 MINUTES.

Kael slammed into the floor.

"Gah!"

He rolled several times before stopping.

For several seconds, he couldn’t move.

Then—

"Pi?"

"Pi!"

The creature crawled out from beneath his coat.

Kael sighed in relief.

"You’re okay."

"Pi."

Kael pushed himself up.

He was back in the underground chamber beneath Aetheris.

The same ancient chamber.

The same stone walls.

But something had changed.

The entire room was covered in cracks.

Second stood near the center.

Third was beside him.

Observer was nowhere to be seen.

Kael looked around.

"Where’s Observer?"

Second stared at him.

"He never came back."

Kael frowned.

"What?"

"He stayed behind."

Third looked toward Kael.

"He said someone had to."

Kael’s expression darkened.

"Someone had to what?"

Third didn’t answer.

A deafening roar shook the academy.

BOOOOOOM!

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Kael looked upward.

"Aetheris."

The System appeared.

[WORLDLINE STATUS]

Aetheris Academy: 61% structural integrity.

Narrative integrity: 42%.

Student existence stability: 68%.

Erasure countdown: 2 Hours, 40 Minutes, 31 Seconds

Kael clenched his fist.

"Leon."

"Alive," Second said.

"Mira?"

"Alive."

"Elena?"

"Alive."

"Lucien?"

Third looked at him.

"Alive."

Kael released a breath.

Good.

At least they were still there.

Then—

BEEP.

A new mission appeared.

[EMERGENCY MISSION]

SAVE THE FIRST STORY

Objective: Prevent Aetheris Academy from becoming an erased narrative location.

Secondary Objective: Protect the individuals whose existence is anchoring the academy.

Targets:

- Leon Ardent

- Mira Ashbourne

- Elena Veyron

- Lucien Graves

- The Unscripted

Reward: 1,500 Karma

Bonus: Unknown

Failure: Aetheris will be removed from the current worldline.

Kael stared.

Then another line appeared.

[NEW INFORMATION]

Aetheris Academy is not merely being erased.

Something is using its erasure to open a path.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"A path to where?"

The System didn’t answer immediately.

Then—

[The path leads toward the First Story.]

Kael looked at Second.

Second’s face had gone pale.

"You heard that."

"Yes."

Third slowly looked toward the ceiling.

"It’s starting."

Kael tightened his grip on his sword.

"What is?"

Third answered.

"The academy isn’t being destroyed."

A deep rumble shook the chamber.

Third looked at Kael.

"It’s being rewritten into the entrance."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"To the First Story?"

Third nodded.

Above them, the academy’s bells began ringing.

One.

Two.

Three.

Then every bell at Aetheris rang simultaneously.

Students screamed.

Magic barriers shattered.

The sky above the academy turned completely white.

And within that white sky—

A single enormous black door appeared.

Kael stared at it.

The same crown.

The same eye.

The same broken chain.

His stomach dropped.

The First Story was opening.

And this time—

It wasn’t waiting for him to enter.

It was coming out.

Kael smiled.

"Of course."

He raised his sword.

"Why would anything in my life ever be simple?"

Pi climbed onto his shoulder.

"Pi."

Second sighed.

Third looked almost amused.

Then the academy shook again.

A voice echoed across the entire worldline.

"FIRST."

Kael’s expression hardened.

Another voice followed.

"RETURN."

Then a third.

"REMEMBER."

Kael looked toward the black door.

His eyes became cold.

"I remember enough."

He stepped forward.

"Now it’s my turn to make the story remember me."

The black door opened.

And something on the other side stepped through.

Something that had been waiting since before Kael ever learned what a story was.
