His mommy was mad. She would punish him again. He didn't want to make her mad at him. He never did.
A little boy was standing in the distance with his head lowered and silently whimpering to himself. His mommy didn't like when he cried. He couldn't control his sobs but he could weep silently.
His mommy slammed the records on the doctor's table in fury.' You illiterate doctor. You can't cure a sick kid. Can't you see he's sick? Why your reports are suggesting contrarily. He can't even pronounce a single word. I'm firing you.'
The helpless man in white coat whom his mommy called the doctor said in a desperate tone, ' Ma'am please try to understand that you're scaring the child. He is not sick...just a little different.'
His mommy looked at the man in white in rage. He wanted to tell his mommy not to be angry with this uncle. He was kind and sweet to him. But he couldn't talk in front of his mommy no matter how much he tried.
'How dare you to talk to me like this? Do you think I'm unreasonable? Do you think I like to wander from doctor to doctor to cure my ill son especially when none of you can name his illness?'
The man in white looked at the weeping child helplessly.
'Ma'am he spoke with the nurse Jules without stuttering for a good few minutes. He can speak if he wants but he needs a loving and caring environment to overcome his problem.'
'Really?' His mommy asked him. There was a different twinkle in her eyes which was usually missing whenever he was near her.
The boys tried to look into his mother's eyes but he lowered again in fear of offending her.
She gripped his chin tightly and brought his face to connect her eyes with him.
'Is it true you talked to that nurse? ' She asked him.
The eight years old boy was trying his best not to let the tears fall in order to prove to his mommy that he was not a weak kid and she could love him like she did his brother. He looked into his mommy's eyes but couldn't find the words to utter.
'Speak,' She said loudly.
He flinched in fear and the tears he was holding back eventually streamed down his cheeks wetting his shirt in the process. Nevertheless, he held back his loud cries. He didn't want his mom to hate him anymore.
'Uuh.....' He struggled to utter the words. His lips moved but no sound came. He couldn't utter any word, his mommy was right he was ill and mute and such kids should be punished.
'Speak you, imbecile.' She gripped his chin even harder. It was hurting him but how could he tell his mommy when he couldn't even speak.
'Uuh...' He tried once again but miserably failed.
'Aaaahhhhhhh' His mommy screamed in outrage. She removed her hand from his chin with a jerk and the sudden movement caused the little boy to fell on the floor.
She threw all the things placed on the doctor's table in wrath and frustration.
She glanced at him, her eyes full of hate, disdain, and disgust.
'You disgraceful imbecile. You ruined my life. You are the biggest and darkest stain on my life. If not for you, I would be free and living my own life. But then you an ugly weakling popped into my lap and ruined my world. You ruined my life. I pray that you will suffer as much as you made me suffer. You will cry tears of blood. You mute imbecile.'
He wanted to decline her accusations.
'You ruined my life. I pray that you will suffer as much as you made me suffer. You will cry tears of blood. You mute imbecile.'
He loved his mommy but why did his mommy hate him?
'You ruined my life. I pray that you will suffer as much as you made me suffer. You will cry tears of blood. You mute imbecile.'
Stop, please. Stop, please.
He had his fingers in his ears, and he closes his eyes. The sound didn't stop.
"Nooooooooooo."
A chilling wail woke Long Jie. He glanced around to find him in his bed. Lord. He was drenched in his sweat. His heart was wildly beating against his ribcage as if it had run a marathon and now begging to rest. He sat upright on the bed and threw away the blanket that was covering him.
He took deep breaths and put his head in his hands. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. He kept on murmuring to himself.
He caressed the empty spot beside him. Thank God she was not there tonight otherwise he didn't know how to explain to her. The voices, the scenes they were back again. He didn't know what triggered it this time.
He stood up and removed his drenched t-shirt and tossed it on the floor. He opened the door and went out.
A different voice rang in his mind. ' Remember Ah-jie, music is therapy. Music soothes bruised souls. Music is the answer to your questions. Drown yourself in music Ah-jie and then find yourself. You will find a new you, the real and a strong you. You are not weak, you are not cretin and you are no different. You are just you, the unique you, the actual you, and the powerful you. Find yourself, Ah-jie. Find yourself.'
He was not weak. He was not lost. He just need to find himself yet again and his brother always said 'find yourself again and again if you need to, but do not lose yourself in the flood of nightmares and torrent of the past. As long as you are breathing, it's the proof you are living. Live Ah- jie don't just merely survive. Be strong, be true and be you. '
