The Trash Guide Awakens: The Youngest General's Hidden Wife
Chapter 97: The Impossible Alliance
The unanswered question burned like a white-hot ember in her chest, refusing to let her go. The words on the holographic display remained floating in the air, glowing with unyielding clarity.
[REINCARNATION FACILITATOR: TRUE KING.]
The True King had not merely crossed paths with her dying soul in the vast expanse of the void; he had intentionally guided her back into the realm of the living.
He had known her soul would awaken in this era. He had orchestrated her return, watching and waiting through the slow turn of centuries.
Rhaevia slowly lifted her head, her gaze shifting from the glowing interface toward Raevor. Her voice sounded strange in her own ears, stripped of all color and emotion. "There is something we haven’t understood."
Raevor’s expression remained intensely focused, his eyes searching her pale face for any sign of mental collapse. "What?"
"The war," she whispered, turning her gaze back toward the dark observation window. Beyond the reinforced glass, the Imperial Capital trembled beneath the weight of ancient machinery and cosmic resonance.
"The ancient war wasn’t what we’ve been told," she continued, her fingers tightening into fists against her sides. "Everything we believed about the past is a lie."
Raevor followed her gaze, his presence beside her a solid, unwavering anchor in the middle of a collapsing reality. He did not interrupt, allowing her time to piece together the fractured memories.
Rhaevia’s thoughts raced through every vision she had recovered. She saw the Second Sovereign’s burning hatred, the pristine golden throne, and her own voluntary sacrifice beneath a sky of dying stars.
She remembered the Sentinel, the elusive True King, and the terrifying form of the Zombie King on the blood-soaked soil of Earth. Each piece was a jagged shard of a much larger, terrifying picture.
"Everything keeps connecting back to me," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "Every single faction is moving because of what I did."
Raevor’s brow furrowed, his jaw tightening as he analyzed her words. "Explain."
"The Third Sovereign faction knows who I was," she said, looking back at him. "The Second Sovereign claims I stole her throne, and the True King personally helped me reincarnate."
She paused, taking a shallow breath that burned in her chest. "And the Zombie King..."
Raevor’s expression changed instantly, his military instincts sharpening at the mention of humanity’s greatest nightmare. His dark eyes locked onto hers with intense scrutiny.
Rhaevia remembered the final battlefield of her previous life on Earth. She recalled the Zombie King’s colossal form, its suffocating pressure, and the desperate struggle that had ended in her own death.
She had driven her weapon straight into its chest, believing she was ending the apocalypse once and for all. But now, looking back through the lens of her ancient memories, that moment felt entirely wrong.
"It never truly hated me," she said, the realization washing over her like ice water. "Not even at the end."
Raevor stared at her, his posture rigid. "What?"
"The Zombie King," Rhaevia repeated, her voice dropping to a low murmur. "When I killed it, I thought I was destroying the ultimate monster."
Her fingers slowly curled, her nails biting into her palms as she summoned the forgotten details of that final breath. "But now I remember something else."
She remembered the creature falling to its knees before her blade. She remembered the strange, horrifying absence of malice in its glowing eyes as life drained from its massive frame.
Most of all, she remembered the words that had haunted her soul long after her physical body had perished. You will return. The King remembers what you cannot.
Raevor’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "You believe it knew you."
"I believe it was waiting for me," Rhaevia said, meeting his gaze with unyielding certainty. "It was waiting for me to take my own life back."
A suffocating silence settled over the command deck, broken only by the rhythmic vibration of the flagship’s core. The magnitude of her words hung in the air like a physical weight.
Rhaevia turned her entire body to face him, searching his face. "What if the Zombie King wasn’t trying to destroy me?"
Raevor’s expression hardened, his jaw set in a rigid line. "Then what was it doing on that dead world?"
"Protecting something," she answered softly. "Or someone."
The possibility sounded insane, a contradiction of everything she had fought and died for in her past life. Yet the more she scrutinized her recovered memories, the more the pieces locked seamlessly into place.
The Zombie King had carried a direct fragment of the True King’s consciousness within its biological core. It had deliberately allowed her to strike the fatal blow without unleashing its full, apocalyptic power.
It had spoken to her as though her death was merely a doorway, knowing she would pass through the cycle of reincarnation. And the True King himself had been waiting on the other side to catch her soul.
The Zombie King had never been the final enemy of her story. It had been an ally trapped inside the terrifying skin of a monster.
It was a guardian deliberately placed between Rhaevia and a far more insidious threat lurking in the dark canopy of the stars. It had stood as a wall against something far worse than a Zerg invasion.
Rhaevia’s breathing grew shallow as the full realization hit her. "The apocalypse..."
She remembered Earth in its final days, buried under ash and blood. She remembered billions of lives extinguished in the blink of an eye, humanity fighting a losing battle against an unrelenting tide.
"What if that wasn’t a war between me and the Zombie King?" she whispered.
Raevor took a deliberate step closer, closing the distance between them until his shadow enveloped her. "What was it?"
Rhaevia looked directly into his dark, steady eyes, her voice shaking with profound emotion. "What if it was a war between the people who wanted me dead..."
She swallowed hard, the truth cutting through her heart like a cold blade. "...and the people trying to make sure I survived long enough to return?"
Raevor’s eyes widened slightly, a rare flicker of shock passing over his normally impassive features. The sheer scale of the deception was staggering, rewriting centuries of recorded history in a single breath.
If her theory was correct, the Zombie King had been guarding her awakening. The True King had been orchestrating her salvation from the shadows.
The monster Rhaevia had spent her previous life despising had actually been shielding her from the true dark forces now stirring across the galaxy.
Suddenly, a pulse of resonant energy swept through the command deck, causing the metallic floor beneath their feet to vibrate. The holographic interface before them violently flickered.
[MEMORY CONVERGENCE DETECTED.]
Rhaevia’s vision blurred as a sudden surge of mental pressure invaded her mind. The physical world faded into a sea of vast, golden light.
A voice resonated deep within her consciousness, echoing through the empty halls of her mind. It was ancient, calm, and intimately familiar.
It was the Sovereign Consciousness, the lingering remnant of her own transcendent power. "You are beginning to understand."
Rhaevia froze in the mental space, standing tall against the overwhelming pressure.
"Then tell me," she commanded, her voice ringing out like a clarion bell.
"Was the Zombie King truly my enemy?" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs as she waited for the truth.
For several agonizing seconds, the mental space remained dead silent. The golden light pulsed around her, heavy with the weight of forgotten millennia.
Then, the Sovereign voice answered, clear and absolute. "No."
Rhaevia’s heart stopped in her chest.
The voice continued, floating through her mind with haunting tranquility. "The one you called the Zombie King was never your true enemy."
Images flooded her vision in a flash of memory and emotion. She saw the colossal Zombie King standing resolute before a celestial gate, its body battered and bleeding black energy.
Countless warships and shadowy armaments surrounded the creature, unleashing relentless destruction upon its form. Yet the beast refused to step aside from the threshold.
It slowly turned its massive, terrifying head away from the invading armada, looking directly toward the distant spot where Rhaevia’s soul drifted. It stood there, holding the line against the universe to protect the passage.
It was waiting for her to cross over. It was buying her time with its own life.
"It was an ally," the voice murmured, fading slowly back into the depths of her subconscious.
Rhaevia’s eyes snapped open as her vision returned to the room. She stumbled backward, her gasping breath loud in the chamber.
Raevor immediately reached out, his strong hands catching her shoulders to keep her from falling. "Rhaevia?"
She barely heard his voice, her mind consumed by the final whisper echoing through her soul.
It died so you could return.
Rhaevia’s entire body went deathly cold as the tears spilled over her eyelashes. The monster she had hated, the creature she had celebrated killing on the ruined soil of Earth, had willingly sacrificed itself so she could live again.
And somewhere beyond the stars, hidden within the deep shadows of the cosmos, the real enemy had finally awakened. The impossible alliance had finally revealed its tragic, magnificent truth.
