The Trash Guide Awakens: The Youngest General's Hidden Wife
Chapter 41: The Zerg Tide
The Level Black emergency report had barely finished transmitting through the encrypted imperial channels when the academy’s planetary defense network suddenly roared to life.
A deafening, continuous emergency siren erupted across the entire training world, rattling window panes and command console frames alike.
Every functional screen remaining across the military academy flashed with an aggressive, pulsing crimson illumination.
[PLANETARY EMERGENCY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.]
[ALL CADETS: IMMEDIATE EVACUATION PROCEDURES.]
[THIS IS NOT A TRAINING EXERCISE.]
A final secondary message unspooled across every tactical display in bright yellow lettering.
[REPEAT: THIS IS NOT A SIMULATION.]
Students froze in their tracks across the vast training grounds. For several agonizing seconds, nobody spoke, and nobody moved.
Then, total chaos erupted across the campus sectors.
"What?" a junior cadet yelled, looking around in utter panic. "An actual emergency protocol?"
"Where are the senior field instructors?" another student shouted over the blaring sirens. "Why isn’t the virtual simulation system responding to our logouts?"
The academy’s field instructors rushed out onto the main grounds, but even their usual strict expressions had completely changed. There was no controlled, professional composure visible on their pale faces. There was only genuine, unadulterated fear.
A senior tactical instructor immediately activated his high-priority command channel, his voice amplified across the local area.
"All cadet units, abandon the scheduled training zones immediately!" he barked. "Fall back to the fortified perimeter sectors!"
A student’s trembling voice cut through the localized communication network. "Sir, what is actually happening out there?"
The instructor hesitated for a single microsecond.
Then came his heavy, raspy answer over the speakers: "Zerg."
That single word caused the entire military academy to fall into dead, frozen silence.
The cadets had trained against simulated Zerg constructs countless times inside their neural pods. They had studied alien anatomy, memorized tactical battle formations, and learned to calculate threat levels for various mutated species.
However, synthetic simulations operated under strict algorithmic rules and safety boundaries. Virtual simulations ended the exact moment an instructor pressed a manual button on the console.
This time, there was no safety button to press.
The hardened ground beneath the western training field suddenly shuddered violently.
BOOM!
Several cadets stumbled off-balance, dropping their energy rifles into the dirt. A second, far more powerful tremor immediately followed the first.
BOOM!
Deep, jagged cracks spread rapidly across the reinforced concrete deck plates. A cadet stared downward at the fracturing earth, his face draining of all color.
"Did you... did you feel that beneath us?" he stammered.
His squad leader immediately raised his heavy weapon, snapping into a low stance.
"Everyone, assume defensive formation right now!" he bellowed.
The ground suddenly ruptured upward in a shower of shattered rock and torn metal.
CRAAAAACK!
A massive, obsidian-armored claw tore through the surface deck. Cadets screamed as a grotesque Zerg creature dragged its heavy body from beneath the soil, its jagged carapace covered in steaming, black biological fluid.
It was not a holographic projection. It was not a training construct. It was real.
The creature parted its mandibles and released a shrill, ear-splitting roar.
SKREEEEEE!
Every Sentinel in the surrounding area acted on pure combat instinct, raising their weapons in unison.
"FIRE!" the squad leader screamed.
Dozens of energy rifles erupted simultaneously, blinding plasma bolts tearing through the air. The creature collapsed heavily onto the rocks beneath the concentrated barrage of fire. However, another massive tremor immediately shook the entire plateau. Then another. And then another.
The instructors exchanged horrified, pale looks with one another.
"This isn’t an isolated perimeter breach," a chief tactical officer whispered, his eyes wide as he stared at the monitoring console.
"How many signatures are coming up?" a instructor demanded.
The planetary sensor array struggled to process the sheer volume of subsurface movement.
[SCANNING...]
[UNDERGROUND BIOLOGICAL SIGNATURES DETECTED.]
[THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME.]
The numerical counter on the monitor continued climbing at an impossible rate.
[10,000. 50,000. 100,000.]
Then, the automated system stopped counting entirely, flashing a system fault.
[ERROR: TARGET COUNT EXCEEDS SENSOR CAPACITY.]
A terrible, suffocating silence settled across the entire academy grounds. The students finally understood the grim reality of their situation. This was not a minor raid by a few stray Zerg creatures. Something unfathomably enormous was moving directly beneath their feet.
Far below the academy grounds, deep beneath layers of bedrock and artificial foundations, millions of creatures surged through a massive, subterranean network of tunnels. They were moving upward toward the surface at terrifying speeds.
They were coming for the humans above.
Rhaevia felt the approaching horde before anyone else on the planet.
High above in orbit inside the flagship’s medical bay, her eyes snapped open, glowing with blue radiance. The perfect 100% synchronization she shared with Raevor allowed her newly awakened Guide senses to reach far beyond normal physical limits.
She could feel the entire planet beneath them. She felt every living human mind, every terrified Sentinel cadet, and every squirming Zerg consciousness.
And deep beneath all of them, she felt a single, massive, coordinated mental presence directing the swarm. Her expression turned thoroughly cold.
"They’re coming," she stated softly.
Raevor immediately turned his dark, analytical gaze toward her.
"How many?" he asked quietly.
Rhaevia’s face became grim.
"I don’t know," she replied.
She closed her eyes, letting her mental energy sink deeper into the planetary crust. The overwhelming sensation grew stronger.
Hundreds of thousands, millions, an entire subterranean Zerg swarm is breaching the crust.
Unlike the wild, chaotic Zergs she had encountered on Planet V-17, these creatures moved with terrifying, strategic coordination. Someone, or something, was actively commanding their movements from the dark.
Raevor immediately tapped his private comm-link, restoring his commanding tone.
"All fleet units, prepare immediate planetary defense protocols," he ordered.
His officers responded over the channel without hesitation. "Yes, General!"
High above the atmosphere, massive imperial warships altered their thruster vectors, locking into battle formations. Down on the surface, frantic instructors organized the panicked cadets into defensive divisions.
The academy’s primary defense barriers activated with a loud hum, expanding massive energy shields over the central campus. Yet, the ground beneath the installation continued to tremble violently.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
Then, the entire western training field completely collapsed inward. A gigantic fissure torn across the landscape, swallowing structures and equipment.
Cadets screamed as the earth split open beneath them. From the pitch-black darkness below, countless crimson eyes suddenly illuminated the dust.
One.
Ten.
A hundred.
A thousand.
Millions.
The academy’s final automated emergency warning flashed across every remaining screen on the planet:
[MASSIVE ZERG SWARM DETECTED.]
[UNDERGROUND BREACH: PLANETARY SCALE.]
[ALL PERSONNEL - SURVIVE.]
The earth exploded upward, and the Zerg tide flooded the surface.
