The Surrogate He Discarded

Chapter 65: The Story Behind KitKat

Isobel watched as Morgan returned to his seat. The moment he stepped away, the stage suddenly felt much larger and overwhelming.

Standing behind the podium, she clasped her trembling hands together and slowly surveyed the sea of faces before her.

Hundreds of eyes stared back. Curious, expectant and skeptical gazes.

She could almost hear their thoughts.

They had expected the creator of KitKat to be someone older. Someone with decades of experience and a long list of accomplishments.

Not a young woman who looked as though she had only recently graduated from college.

For a brief moment, self-doubt crept into her heart. But Morgan’s encouraging gaze below grounded her.

Immediately, her breathing steadied.

A small smile touched her lips. The audience leaned forward to speak.

Everyone expected technical jargon about AI, machine learning and algorithms.

Instead, Isobel took a deep breath and said,

"Most people think Project KitKat began in a laboratory."

She paused and looked at the crowd.

"It didn’t."

The hall grew quieter.

"It began with two babies."

A ripple of surprise swept through the audience. Even Martin lowered his phone. Charlotte looked up from her seat. Several executives exchanged puzzled glances.

At the VIP table, Kristoff’s attention sharpened immediately.

"It was during one of the most difficult periods of my life."

Her voice softened.

"My darkest hour."

For a brief moment, her composure cracked. Almost unconsciously, her gaze drifted toward the VIP table, past Morgan until it landed on Kristoff.

Their eyes met. Only for a second. But it was enough.

Kristoff felt as though all the air had been ripped from his lungs.

The look in her eyes held pain. Not a fresh one but an old pain she carried since that day at the hospital. The kind of pain that had settled deep within the soul.

Before he could make sense of it, she looked away.

"Then I met two babies."

A genuine smile appeared on her face. The kind that reached her eyes.

"And somehow, they gave me a reason to keep moving forward."

The audience listened attentively. Gone were the whispers. Gone were the doubts. Everyone was captivated.

Isobel spoke about sleepless nights.

About exhausted mothers struggling to balance work and childcare.

She talked about medication reminders and temperature monitoring.

The endless cycle of worry that accompanied caring for a child.

As she spoke, her words carried the authenticity of someone who had lived through every experience.

Not studied it but lived it.

"The twins couldn’t tell me what they needed."

The giant screen behind her displayed a simple image of tiny footprints.

The room remained silent.

"So I had to learn to understand them."

Her voice grew stronger.

"I learned their cries The way they moved. The tiny changes in their expressions. The subtle differences between hunger, discomfort, fear, and fatigue."

She smiled softly.

"And it made me wonder something."

The audience hung on every word.

"What if technology could learn people the same way?"

Several executives straightened in their seats. Now they understood. This wasn’t just a heartwarming story. This was the birth of an idea.

"I wanted to create a system that could understand human behavior before a person even realized they needed help."

The screen shifted to display complex behavioral models and predictive patterns.

"So I began developing algorithms capable of analyzing responses to external stimuli and predicting future actions."

A murmur of awe swept through the room. Even the rival CEOs looked impressed.

What started as a simple solution for caring for two infants had evolved into revolutionary technology.

"The first version was crude."

An ugly puppy was displayed on the screen. It looked very clumsy bumping something along its way.

A few chuckles echoed through the hall.

"I honestly didn’t think it would become what it is today."

She paused.

"Technology should understand people before people have to ask for help."

Silence followed, not awkward silence but the thoughtful one.

The kind that came when people encountered an idea that resonated deeply.

At that moment, the audience finally understood.

Project KitKat wasn’t born for profit or ambition and competition.

It was born from compassion...from responsibility...

From love.

Kristoff couldn’t take his eyes off her. Everything else faded into the background. The applause. The audience.

Even Charlotte sitting beside him. He didn’t notice her hand tightening around his arm. Didn’t hear her call his name three times.

His attention remained fixed on the woman standing beneath the spotlight. Her green dress seemed to shimmer like the emeralds.

Every word she spoke struck something deep inside him. Then came the realization that unsettled him most.

The twins. Morgan’s twins. They were the inspiration behind Project KitKat.

Not Alex, their son.

A strange pain pierced his chest. Why did it bother him?

Then a memory surfaced. A memory he had buried long ago.

Her pathetic state when she begged him for just one look at their son. Just one chance to hold him.

But he rejected her heartlessly.

At that time, he convinced himself it was necessary. That seeing Alex would only make it harder for her to move on. That he was protecting her.

But now... for the first time...he wondered if he had simply been cruel.

His jaw tightened.

Then another thought followed. A selfish and shameful one.

Why had she built something so beautiful inspired by another man’s children?

Why not Alex? Why not their son?

The irrational jealousy shocked even him. Yet he couldn’t suppress it.

...

While Kristoff wrestled with emotions he couldn’t understand, Morgan watched from his seat with quiet pride.

Unlike everyone else in the hall, he already knew this story.

He knew the countless nights she had spent perfecting the prototype.

Though Isobel rarely spoke about her struggles, he had seen them.

Many nights, long after everyone else had gone to sleep, the nursery’s security cameras would show her sitting beside the sleeping twins.

A laptop balanced on her knees, code reflected in tired eyes.

Sometimes she worked until dawn. Sometimes she fell asleep beside the cribs. Only to wake up and start again.

Morgan had witnessed her determination. And now the world was finally seeing it too.

As her speech neared its end, Isobel smiled.

Near the end of her speech, Isobel revealed why the project was called KitKat.

Everyone expected some sophisticated tech explanation.

Instead, she said smiling.

"Kit and Kat were the nicknames of the twins who were the inspiration behind this product.."

The entire hall falls silent. ℯℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Then the giant screen behind her changed.

A photo appeared. Two smiling babies looking at the two white Maltese.

The true inspiration behind the project that sold millions on its first month of release.

At the VIP table, Kristoff stared at the photograph. And for reasons he couldn’t explain, something inside him broke.

Because as he looked at those smiling children... he couldn’t stop thinking about Alex.

Their son.

The son Isobel had never been allowed to hold.

The son who could have been her inspiration too.
