The Surrogate He Discarded
Chapter 127: The Reason and the Tragic Fate
Emelia lowered her gaze, letting out a long, weary sigh.
"It wasn’t because we didn’t want you."
Her voice trembled with guilt.
"We loved you from the moment you were born."
She paused, struggling to continue.
"But your uncle... he was still consumed by grief."
"He couldn’t forgive the man who had broken your mother’s heart."
Her fingers tightened around Isobel’s hand.
"And because your mother died bringing you into this world... he couldn’t bear to look at you without remembering the only family he had lost."
Tears welled in Emelia’s eyes.
"It wasn’t right. I told him so many times. But grief can make good people say and do terrible things."
She wiped away a tear before continuing.
"So your grandfather and I made the hardest decision of our lives."
Her voice cracked.
"I asked my husband to take you to the city... and send you in an orphanage."
Isobel’s breathing hitched.
"We convinced ourselves it was for your own good. We were very poor and staying with us, you will have no future."
Emelia’s shoulders shook with quiet sobs.
"We believed a child as beautiful as you would be adopted by a loving family... one that could give you opportunities we never could."
She looked into Isobel’s eyes, tears flowing freely now.
"But not a single day passed without me wondering..."
"...whether you had enough to eat."
"...whether someone held you when you cried."
"...or whether you thought your family had abandoned you."
"I’m so sorry, my child."
"I’m so... so sorry."
The old woman bowed her head, unable to stop the tears that had been buried in her heart for more than two decades.
Isobel hugged Emilia tightly. The old woman gently stroked her hair, patting her back with the tender rhythm of someone comforting a frightened child.
Emilia leaned back just enough to look at her, her eyes crinkling with a warm smile.
"Look at you now," she said softly. "You’ve grown into such a beautiful young woman. It seems a wonderful family adopted you."
Isobel’s body went still.
The words lodged in her throat.
If only Emilia knew the truth. That no family had ever truly kept her.
That every place she’d called home had eventually slipped through her fingers.
Would the old woman still be smiling?
Or would her heart break for the little girl who had spent her entire life searching for a place to belong?
People often assumed no one wanted to adopt her. That wasn’t true. Families had wanted her.
They just never kept her.
When she was only six months old, a wealthy couple fell in love with her bright eyes and infectious smile. They completed the paperwork and were on their way to bring her home when a speeding truck slammed into their car.
Both survived after weeks in intensive care, but the couple was deeply superstitious. They believed the accident was heaven’s warning that the child wasn’t meant to become part of their family. They quietly withdrew the adoption.
When she was five, another family gave her a chance. They brought her home for a trial stay, bought her new dresses, and even let her call them Mommy and Daddy.
For four glorious days, she believed she finally had a home.
On the fifth day, they took her to the mall.
A terrorist attack shattered the afternoon.
Explosions echoed through the building. People screamed and ran in every direction. Both of her prospective parents were badly injured while shielding her from the blast.
They spent weeks recovering in the hospital.
Isobel was returned to the orphanage before they were discharged.
The couple never came back.
By then, whispers had begun to spread.
She’s cursed.
She’s bad luck.
No one said those words where she could hear them. Not at first.
Then, when Isobel turned seven, a businessman named David and her wife, Hannah, walked into the orphanage.
Unlike everyone before them, they weren’t overly wealthy. They did not promise her fancy toys or expensive vacations. But Hannah knelt in front of Isobel, smiled warmly, and asked if she’d like to help bake cookies that weekend.
They were choosing her.
Six months later, the adoption became official.
It was the happiest day of Isobel’s life.
She finally had parents.
She finally had a home.
For three wonderful months, life was ordinary in the best possible way.
Hannah braided her hair before school every morning.
David taught her how to ride a bicycle, jogging behind her until she could balance on her own.
They read her bedtime stories, taught her board games, and laughed around the dinner table.
Sometimes, late at night, Isobel would wake just to make sure they were still there.
They always were.
Until they weren’t.
On a rainy evening, as they drove home from visiting Hannah’s sister, a drunk driver crossed the center line.
The crash killed Hannah and David instantly.
Isobel survived with only a few bruises.
People called it a miracle.
She didn’t.
Within days, she was back at the orphanage, carrying the same small suitcase she’d packed when she’d left three months earlier.
Only now, everyone knew the stories.
The wealthy couple. The mall attack. The fatal accident.
Some of the older children avoided her.
Some of the staff pitied her.
Others whispered when they thought she couldn’t hear.
"Everyone who tries to keep that girl..."
"...ends up suffering."
It didn’t matter whether it was true. Soon enough, everyone believed it.
Eventually...
So did Isobel.
Even the orphanage staff, who should have known better, couldn’t completely shake the unease. Whenever prospective couples came looking for a child, Isobel’s name was quietly left off the list.
Three tragedies were no longer dismissed as terrible coincidences.
They had become a pattern.
As the years passed, younger children came and went, each leaving hand in hand with a new family, while Isobel remained behind. She learned not to get her hopes up whenever visitors arrived. It was easier that way.
By the time she graduated from high school, she had aged out of the orphanage without ever finding a permanent home.
College became her only way forward.
Armed with excellent grades and unwavering determination, she earned a scholarship that gave her the chance to build a future on her own.
For the first time in her life, the path ahead belonged to no one but herself.
