A few of the men’s expressions immediately soured, and they watched Li Yang with even greater vigilance.

As for the scarred man, he was stunned for a moment before he started to laugh. He subtly signaled for his men not to get agitated and looked at Li Yang with an amused expression. “What kind of adventure are you looking for in the mountains? Forget it. It’s dangerous in there. You should just stay here.”

If he weren’t trying to avoid trouble here, the scarred man would have slapped Li Yang across the face.

“It’s fine, it’s fine…” Li Yang said, unable to take a hint. “I just like thrilling activities. Besides, there are so many of you. What do we have to be afraid of? Once we’re in the mountains, with so many people to protect me, it’ll be fine.”

“You think we’re here to protect you?” One of the guys lost his appetite, slamming his chopsticks down and looking ready to fight.

The scarred man was getting pissed off too. ‘This kid really doesn’t know when to quit. I’ve already told him this much, and he still won’t let it go.’

He took a deep breath to calm himself before speaking again. “Alright, stop messing around. Get out of here. It’s true we’re going into the mountains, but it’s far more dangerous up there than it is here.”

He finished with a cold sneer.

A wave of killing intent radiated from him.

Li Yang immediately frowned. ‘What potent killing intent. If I’m not mistaken, this guy has definitely killed before.’

This only made Li Yang more curious. ‘Just who are these people?’

“You all…” Li Yang hesitated for a moment. ‘These people are well-armed and numerous. If I really went into the mountains with them, it might not be so safe. I might as well be direct with them here.’ “Are you going into the mountains to find the giant snake?”

At that, everyone inside shot to their feet. Some had already moved to the door, looking ready to shut it and start killing at a moment’s notice.

‘So professional!’

Li Yang’s heart sank. These people were clearly well-trained, on a completely different level from your average desperadoes.

The scarred man’s face darkened.

‘What’s with this guy? Does he have a death wish? We’ve already reached this point, and he’s still spouting nonsense at me.’

“Kid…” the scarred man said grimly, “don’t you know that stupid people live longer?”

Li Yang laughed. “Over a snake? Is it really that serious? At worst, it’s just illegal hunting. Why would you need to kill me?”

The scarred man was taken aback.

“Or are you hiding some other unspeakable secret?” Li Yang asked again.

“Brother Scar, kill him!” the big man who had been rude to Li Yang earlier spoke up at once. “Our presence here is supposed to be a secret! How could he possibly know? This whole thing is top secret. Could he have been sent by our rivals?”

The others nodded in agreement.

Clearly, in their line of work, killing people made things much easier.

Looking at them, Li Yang was now almost certain: these men were desperadoes.

The scarred-faced man hesitated. He didn’t want to kill anyone here. The act of killing itself wasn’t a big deal, but it wasn’t the most important thing right now.

While he was hesitating, he looked up at Li Yang and saw that the kid was still smiling, completely unfazed by the big man’s threat.

This stunned the scarred-faced man for a moment. He subconsciously asked, “You’re not afraid?”

Li Yang smiled. “I’m afraid. I’m scared to death, in fact. So, can you let me say a few words?”

The scarred-faced man was getting angry. ‘Fuck, do you take me for a blind man? Is that the face of someone who’s scared?’

Seeing that they weren’t saying anything, Li Yang spoke again. “The reason I know is because I ran into that giant snake. It had been shot in three places. And you all… you’re carrying guns, right? That’s why I asked.”

“Damn it!” the big man shouted again. “Brother Scar, look at him! This guy definitely followed us here…”

“You’ve seen the giant snake?” But the scarred man’s face lit up with joy. “Where did you see it?”

Li Yang remained silent.

“How about this: you tell us, and I’ll let you live,” the scarred man said with a chuckle. “We came here specifically for that giant snake. The creature is incredibly smart. It ran off after we hit it, and it’s been hard to find since. We had no other choice but to come to this village to see if we could find any trace of it.”

“Let it go…” Li Yang said after a moment of thought. “A snake this huge must have lived for countless years, and it’s nearly gained sentience. It’s better not to kill something like that.”

“Hah!” The scarred man laughed contemptuously. “Gained sentience? What do you think this is? I don’t care what it’s gained, we’re killing it this time, no matter what. Kid, don’t try to act like some kind of saint in front of me. If you don’t talk, I’ll send you on your way with it. I mean what I say.”

The other men all glared at Li Yang, their faces filled with killing intent.

Li Yang wasn’t nervous at all. Instead, he sat down, poured himself a cup of tea, and then looked at them with a smile. “Alright. Since you insist on putting it that way, let’s have a proper chat. Why do you have to kill it?”
