Chapter 416: Chapter 413: Repaying Kindness with Enmity?

With that, the five elders charged the demonic decoy without another moment’s hesitation.

Seeing the five elders arrive, the Thief Master immediately disengaged from the demonic creature, switched targets, and swung his sword toward Saint Envoy Tian.

A dark light pulsed from the deep purple longsword. A condensed, dark energy swirled around it like a hurricane. As the blade descended, this power coalesced into a black gleam of sword light, which grew larger as it flew, transforming into a colossal blade in the blink of an eye.

SWOOSH!

The sword light tore through the air. A dozen or so Root Cutting Sect masters tried to block it, but found the colossal blade was like an intangible phantom; it passed straight through them and struck Saint Envoy Tian.

Saint Envoy Tian, who was focusing all his power, had no time to dodge and was instantly cleaved in two by the black sword light!

With Saint Envoy Tian dead, the Magic Power gathered in the [Array-Breaking Spear] instantly dissipated, and the weapon plummeted to the ground...

In a matter of moments, the tables had turned once again.

Seeing the attempt to break the array fail, the demonic decoy grew even more furious. Its massive, fleshy wings beat frantically, blanketing all of Five States City in a deluge of Demonic Qi. Countless dark fireballs rained down like meteorites.

"You will all die—!" the demonic decoy roared, engaging the Thief Master and the five elders in a ferocious battle.

Meanwhile, the battle on the ground was dealt an unprecedented blow. The damage from the monster’s black fireballs was terrifying. More importantly, these fireballs carried a corrosive demonic poison. If an ordinary Mage was so much as touched by it, their entire Genetic Tree would be damaged and weakened.

The moment the black fireballs began to fall, Feng Hao pulled out the spare Demonic Poison Antidotes he was carrying. He had Lin Luo and the other three take them, then rushed to support Yao Girl.

"Stop fighting! Everyone, fall back to the Elder Hall!" Feng Hao shouted to the others as he retreated.

Hearing Feng Hao’s warning, the instructors and elite students quickly disengaged from their fights and fell back toward the Elder Hall.

Just as Feng Hao and his four companions were about to rendezvous with the Xiyue sisters, they were suddenly intercepted and surrounded by a squad from the Root Cutting Sect. The young man leading them was none other than Lu Wen Jie.

"Wen Jie, what is the meaning of this?" Feng Hao demanded, his expression darkening.

Beside him, Mei Meimei also recognized Lu Wen Jie immediately. "Huh?" she said, her expression a mix of shock and suspicion. "Isn’t that the kid from Yuanfu Town?"

"What’s going on? You know this kid?" Lin Luo and the others asked in confusion.

Mei Meimei frowned and explained, "We rescued him from the True God Sect back when we were escorting Fifth Brother."

"Uh, then why has he joined up with the True God Sect?" Wang Tongqian asked, stunned.

"I don’t know." Mei Meimei shook her head helplessly.

Facing the questioning gazes of Feng Hao and Mei Meimei, Lu Wen Jie’s expression was as calm as ever, as if the chaotic battlefield around him had nothing to do with him. "Attack!"

At Lu Wen Jie’s command, the crowd of Root Cutting Sect Mages swarmed forward.

The sudden turn of events left Feng Hao stunned and suspicious. A strange anger surged within him. "Damn it! If I had known, I never should have saved you!"

Mei Meimei was just as furious. She raised her Magic Energy Gun and opened fire. "If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s an ungrateful bastard!"

"Second, Third, kill them—!" Lin Luo’s expression hardened as he gave the order to attack.

The two sides clashed in an instant. However, the Root Cutting Sect Mages posed little threat to Lin Luo and his three companions. Within moments, a large number of them had been cut down.

Meanwhile, Feng Hao was already clashing with Lu Wen Jie, dagger flashing as he attacked without mercy.

"So you think you’re hot shit now, huh?" Feng Hao cursed as he attacked. "Real proud of your two Genetic Trees, are you? Today, I’ll show you what a real badass looks like!"

With that, he deftly adjusted his footing and unleashed a combination of [Rapid Shadow Slash] and [Moon Wheel Dance].

But Lu Wen Jie was no pushover. With two Genetic Trees, he was nearly as strong as Feng Hao, and what’s more, he was now level sixty-seven, giving him a definitive advantage.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

The flash of the dagger and the glow of magic clashed and tore at each other, sending out ripples of force. After several exchanges, they were surprisingly evenly matched.

Mei Meimei, who was providing covering fire from the side, saw this and her eyes widened in disbelief. "Something’s not right. How is this kid so strong?"

"By all accounts, he doesn’t seem like a Sixth-rank Mage. He’s terrifying, frankly," Lin Luo mused.

"No, that’s not what I mean," Mei Meimei said, shaking her head. "What I mean is, he *shouldn’t* be this strong."

Lin Luo stared at her, dumbfounded. "What do you mean by that?"

Mei Meimei pressed her lips together and briefly explained Lu Wen Jie’s backstory.

After hearing Mei Meimei’s story, Lin Luo and the other two turned pale with shock and couldn’t help but gasp.

Meanwhile, Feng Hao and Lu Wen Jie were still locked in a stalemate. But as the fight wore on, Feng Hao gradually calmed down. He realized that Lu Wen Jie was mostly defending, and even when he did attack, he only used simple moves.

It was obvious he was going easy on him, or at the very least, just going through the motions.

Thinking about Lu Wen Jie’s situation, Feng Hao felt he was starting to understand something. "You’ve still got a conscience after all," he said. "The Root Cutting Sect is finished. I’d advise you to cut your losses and switch sides."

Lu Wen Jie shook his head meaningfully, then suddenly lunged at Feng Hao. He moved so fast that Feng Hao had no time to react.

"You—!" Feng Hao cried out in alarm, instinctively raising his dagger to counter.

However, just as he thought Lu Wen Jie was about to strike, he found that as Lu Wen Jie’s palm hit his chest, the young man simultaneously shoved a strange syringe into his shirt.

"Use this," Lu Wen Jie murmured softly, then impassively glanced up at the demonic creature in the sky, as if giving a hint.

Feng Hao was about to ask what he meant, but Lu Wen Jie suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood and was sent flying backward.

Then, to everyone’s astonishment, Lu Wen Jie clutched his chest and fled from the Five Provinces Academy.

With Lu Wen Jie gone, the Root Cutting Sect Mages instantly lost their nerve. They broke and fled, and were quickly finished off by Lin Luo and his companions.

"Xiaowu, how could you let him get away? I wanted to finish that traitor off myself!" Mei Meimei rushed over to Feng Hao, looking displeased.

"Well..." Feng Hao hesitated, pulling the syringe from his shirt. He glanced up at the chaotic battle in the sky and said thoughtfully, "Maybe we were wrong about him."

Mei Meimei stared at him, baffled. "What do you mean? The kid’s an ungrateful traitor!"

"No, no, no." Feng Hao shook his head. He tried injecting some of his Magic Power into the syringe Lu Wen Jie had given him, aimed it at the demonic decoy in the sky, and fired.

WHOOSH!

A silver needle, as fine as a strand of silk, shot out and struck the demonic creature with ease.

The demonic decoy, busy fighting the Thief Master and the elders, didn’t notice such a minuscule attack. It didn’t even feel the needle pierce its skin.
