Gray reached out with his mind and selected the fourth path.

[EVOLUTION SELECTED: AURELIA ASCENDANT]

[Are you certain? This choice is permanent and will determine your growth path until the next evolution threshold.]

’Yes.’

[EVOLUTION — INITIATED]

His flesh dissolved and reformed in the same breath, caught between destruction and creation. The dark carapace that had defined his Night Shade form cracked and split, shedding away in layers of shattered chitin. Beneath it, new flesh emerged, pale, luminous, shimmering with a faint, golden light that pulsed from deep within.

His translucent bell darkened to a deep, divine white, and rings of gold traced across his surface like living veins. His blade-tentacles elongated, reshaping, their crystalline scythes smoothing into something more elegant. He could feel them responding to his will, hardening into blades at a thought, softening back into ribbon-like limbs just as easily.

The pain peaked, then faded into a cold, sharp clarity.

[Genetic Evolution — COMPLETE]

[Shapeshift — AVAILABLE]

Gray opened his eyes and the world was bright.

He flinched, his bell contracting on instinct, but the brightness didn’t hurt. It was soft, filtered through the water, the glow of the coral and the distant bioluminescence of the abyss painting everything in shades of blue and violet and pale gold. He could see the texture of the stone walls. The individual grains of sediment on the seafloor. The way the light bent and shifted through the water.

’I can see,’ he whispered, his mental voice trembling with something he hadn’t felt in a long time.

He looked down at himself, at his new body. His tentacles trailed beneath him, longer and more elegant than before, their crystalline edges softened into something almost beautiful.

He flexed them, watching the way they moved through the water. They responded to his will instantly, hardening into blades at a thought, softening back into ribbons just as easily.

’This is incredible,’ he said.

He pulled up his status, the golden text materializing in his vision and for the first time, he could see the color of it. A warm, radiant gold that matched the veins in his bell.

[Level: 50]

[Stat Points: 140]

[Skill Points: 14]

’Time to use these.’

He allocated the stat points carefully, methodically. Sixty into SPD, thirty into ATK, twenty into DEF, twenty into INT, and ten into LUK.

[SPD: 358 → 418]

[ATK: 204 → 234]

[DEF: 127 → 147]

[HP MAX: 1380 → 1880]

[INT: 138 → 158]

[MP MAX: 1300 → 1800]

[LUK: 50 → 60]

He felt the changes settle into his body. His senses sharpened. His bell felt denser, more powerful. His mana pool expanded, the ocean inside him growing deeper and wider.

Then the skill points. Fourteen of them.

He pulled up his skill list, studying each one.

[VOID REAPER’S LANCE — Lv. 5 → Lv. 10 (MAX)]

[TECTONIC SHIFT — Lv. 1 → Lv. 5]

[PHANTOM CLOAK — Lv. 5 → Lv. 8]

[ARCANE BURST — Lv. 1 → Lv. 7]

[NEEDLE STORM — Lv. 1 → Lv. 6]

[CURRENT DASH — Lv. 1 → Lv. 5]

He confirmed the allocation, and the skills settled into his core like blades sliding into their sheaths.

He flexed his tentacles, feeling the power humming through his carapace.

Lily circled Gray’s new body in a slow, joyful spiral, her five points orbiting like excited moons. Her dark core pulsed with bright, rapid beats, and she kept brushing her rounded edges against his bell as if confirming he was real.

Gray tracking her movements with quiet amusement.

"So?" he asked. "What do you think of the new body? Do you like it?"

Lily pulsed once, bright and enthusiastic, then spun around him in a tighter circle. If she had a face, she would have been grinning. She clearly loved it.

Cindy drifted closer, her silver glow steadying as she studied his new form. Her frills swayed slowly, thoughtfully, as she took in the sight of him.

"You’ve gotten brighter," she said quietly.

Gray’s bell tilted.

"That’s the first thing you say?"

Cindy blinked, caught off guard.

"What else was I supposed to say?"

"I don’t know. Maybe something like ’you look handsome’ or ’you look cool’?"

Cindy stared at him, her silver eyes flat and unimpressed.

"Since when are jellyfish handsome? Don’t be ridiculous, Gray."

Gray let out a soft pulse that might have been a laugh.

’You know, when I look at you like this... you’re actually kind of cute.’

Cindy’s frills flared instantly. Her small body stiffened, and her silver eyes widened with flustered alarm.

"What?! What do you mean by that all of a sudden?!"

Gray drifted closer. Two of his tentacles reached out and gently lifted her small axolotl body off the seafloor. Cindy squirmed, her tiny hands pushing uselessly against his grip.

"I always thought you were cute from your vibrations and electrical signals," Gray said calmly. "But seeing you directly like this... yeah. You’re definitely cute."

Cindy’s face flushed. Her frills trembled. Her silver glow flickered erratically, as if her mana channels were short-circuiting.

"S-Stop it! Put me down! Right now!"

"Why? You’re comfortable there."

"I said put me down!"

Lily, watching from a few feet away, pulsed with what could only be described as amusement. Her dark core flickered in a rhythm that almost sounded like laughter.

Cindy twisted and squirmed, her tiny webbed hands slapping uselessly against Gray’s tentacles. But Gray didn’t let go. He just hovered there, holding her gently, watching her flustered struggle with quiet satisfaction.

"You know," he said, "you’re even cuter when you’re angry."

Cindy’s frills snapped rigid.

"I WILL BITE YOU!"

"You already tried that. It didn’t work."

"I’LL BITE HARDER!"

Gray’s luminous gaze softened with amusement. He held her a moment longer, letting her stew in her own embarrassment, before finally, slowly, lowering her back down to the seafloor.

"Okay, okay. I’ll let you go."

Cindy landed on the mossy ground with a small huff. She immediately turned away, crossing her tiny arms, her frills still quivering with indignation.

"...stupid gray," she muttered.
