The Solar Heretic
Chapter 27-Lyra Vane(3)
Chapter 27: 27-Lyra Vane(3)
In Sol’s thermal vision, the bright, defiant blue star in Valera’s chest violently flickered.
The golden threads of heat he had spent four days weaving into her veins went dark, swallowed up by the invading purple rot of Lyra’s mist and her own unchecked Permafrost rushing in to claim her injured body.
Valera’s eyes rolled back. She slid down the brick wall into the dirty water, completely unconscious, blood pooling from the back of her skull and the deep wire-cuts across her chest.
"Val?" Sol said.
She didn’t answer. In his vision, her heartbeat was slowing down.
Thump... ... thump...
Without her conscious will holding her bloodline back, her own core was beginning to freeze her lungs from the inside out.
If she didn’t get heat in three minutes, she was going to die in the mud without ever waking up.
Up the tunnel, Lyra let out a long, shuddering breath, lowering her rapiers slightly as she stepped down from her tightrope into the shallow water.
"That was fast," Lyra said, sounding genuinely disappointed as she looked past Sol at Valera’s limp body.
"Uncle Cassian made it sound like the Fyrn bloodline was some terrifying monster from the old days. One good pull and she breaks her own head on the bricks. What a waste of a walk."she continued.
She looked back at Sol.
Sol was standing in the middle of the tunnel. Blood was running down his chest and pouring from his left hand where he’d grabbed the wire.
He wasn’t looking at Lyra anymore. He was staring over his shoulder at the slow, fading blue light in Valera’s chest.
"Hey," Lyra said, flicking her right rapier so a wire snapped across Sol’s cheek, opening a thin red line below his eye.
"Look at me when I’m talking to you, dog. Uncle wants the crystals back, and I want to know how you burned Kael’s wrists. Drop the sword and I’ll let you bleed out slow enough to watch me take her head."she said, watching his face change.
Sol slowly turned his head back toward her.
Inside his chest, the heavy, Mid-Stage furnace was hammering against his ribs.
He had spent a week learning how to be careful. He had listened to Valera. Condense the heat. Don’t let it bleed out into the air. Keep the ledger clean. Save four crystals in the bag so you don’t burn yourself out.
And while he was being careful, Valera was dying three feet behind him in two inches of sewer water.
Sol let go of his sword hilt with his bleeding left hand. He reached down to his belt, ripped open the burlap sack, and pulled out all four of the remaining refined inner-city crystals at once.
Lyra’s slit-pupil eyes narrowed as she saw the four glowing octagons in his fist. "Put those down. Those belong to House Vane."
Sol didn’t put them down.
He shoved all four pure crystals into his mouth, bit down with enough force to crack two of his own back teeth, and swallowed the jagged chunks of stone whole.
"Are you stupid?" Lyra hissed, stepping forward and raising both rapiers to sever his neck before the crystals could hit his stomach. "Eating four pure shards at once will blow your heart through your spine!"
It should have.
When the four crystals hit the bottom of his throat and dissolved, the sheer volume of pure lunar mist was enough to take a man from Mid-Stage straight to the ceiling of the realm, if he had three days to digest it. Taking it in three seconds was suicide.
His veins immediately bulged against his skin like thick, black worms, the pressure in his skull spiking so hard blood poured straight out of his nose and ears.
His core couldn’t process it. The walls of his furnace began to crack under the pressure.
I don’t care, Sol screamed inside his own head, staring at the woman blocking him from warming Valera up. Burn the walls. Burn the blood. Burn it all!
Something inside the center of his chest snapped, not breaking, but unlocking, like a heavy iron grate being kicked clean off its hinges at the bottom of a furnace.

Sol didn’t glow orange.
A shockwave of invisible, suffocating heat blasted outward from his body in a thirty-foot sphere.
The ankle-deep water around his boots didn’t just steam; it flash-boiled in half a second, filling the brick tunnel with a deafening, pressurized roar of scalding white vapor.
The wet slime on the brick walls dried, cracked, and turned to gray ash.
Up the incline, Lyra gasped, throwing an arm over her face as the wall of boiling steam slammed into her.
Through her Glass Nerves curse, which amplified every sensation tenfold while her threads were active the sudden, violent shift from freezing sewer air to two hundred degrees felt like someone had thrown a bucket of boiling oil straight into her open eyes.
"What did you do?!" Lyra shrieked, stumbling back a step and slashing wildly with both rapiers.
Twenty silver threads whipped down the tunnel through the steam, woven so tightly together that not even a rat could slip through without being cut into ribbons.
Sol didn’t dodge a single one of them.
He walked forward.
His skin was bright, angry red, the veins underneath glowing like white-hot tungsten wires through his flesh.
Every step he took burned away one percent of the energy in his core, eating through the four crystals he had just swallowed and starting to chew on his own muscle fibers for fuel..
When the twenty Peak-Stage frost threads hit the three-foot radius around Sol’s body, they didn’t cut him.
The air around him was so catastrophically hot that the microscopic silver wires simply evaporated into purple mist two inches before they could touch his skin.
"My threads-!" Lyra’s voice cracked with genuine terror as she felt her web vanishing in the steam.
Sol stepped out of the boiling fog five feet in front of her.
His blind eyes were two solid orbs of blinding white light.
Black blood was running down his chin from his nose and mouth, sizzling and drying into crust before it could drip off his jaw. He held his wrapped silver sword in one hand and the cloth wrappings on the hilt had finally caught fire, burning around his fist as the blade itself turned a terrifying, translucent white-hot, softening at the edges like wax.
Lyra didn’t try to use her wires at close range. She was a Vane, she had been trained by Level 2 masters since she could walk.
She dropped her weight and lunged with both rapiers in a blinding, five-point thrust aimed at Sol’s throat, eyes, and heart.
With Override active, Sol’s muscles didn’t move like a Mid-Stage cultivator’s.
He didn’t parry delicately. He swung his softening, white-hot sword like a butcher’s cleaver right across the front of his chest.
CLANG-SHATTER.
Sol’s blade hit the middle of both needle-thin rapiers at once. The combination of brute, over-clocked physical force and two thousand degrees of concentrated solar heat snapped the high-grade silver steel of Lyra’s blades cleanly in half.
Before the broken points of her rapiers even hit the boiling water at their feet, Sol dropped his own half-melted sword, stepped inside her guard, and grabbed the remaining twelve threads trailing from her left wrist with his bare, burning hand.
"Let go!" Lyra screamed, trying to cut her own threads off at the hilt.
Sol didn’t pull the threads.
He squeezed his fist shut around the bundle of silver wires and dumped the full, unfiltered roar of his Override straight down the conductive frost-lines into her nervous system.
For a normal cultivator, it would have burned their hand.
For Lyra Vane, whose Glass Nerves wired every thread directly into the sensory center of her brain, it was like having a white-hot iron rod driven straight through both ears.
Lyra didn’t even get to scream. Her jaw locked open, blood burst from both of her nostrils from the neural overload, and her slit-pupil eyes rolled back into her head as her brain short-circuited from the pain.
Sol didn’t stop there. He couldn’t afford to leave her alive, and he couldn’t wait to interrogate her while Valera was freezing behind him.
With his right hand, Sol caught her by the high leather collar of her hunting coat, lifted the Peak-Stage noble three inches off the bricks, and drove his fist-glowing like a miniature sun straight through the center of her silver-scaled breastplate.
The leather and scale-mail charred and split. The kinetic impact, backed by a furnace burning through its own ribs, crushed her sternum directly into her heart and shattered her Peak-Stage core from the outside.
Lyra went completely limp in his grip, her broken rapiers splashing into the hot water.
Sol threw her body aside against the brick wall. He didn’t even wait for the Silver Eye to finish dissolving her corpse into mist, the moment her massive, glowing Peak-Stage crystal materialized in the rising silver dust,.
Sol snatched it out of the air, shoved it into his pocket, and then he stopped the Override.
