Chapter 14: 14-The plan

Sol did not lower his sword. The contained, blistering heat of the silver blade cast a harsh orange underglow against the narrow brick walls of the alleyway, illuminating the thick, metallic scar tissue covering the left side of Voss’s face.

In Sol’s thermal vision, the Slum King was a sprawling, chaotic storm. Unlike the Enforcers, whose cores were tightly bound, refined spheres of cold blue, Voss’s energy bled outward in jagged spikes of deep purple and red.

It was the undeniable signature of heavy lunar mutation, a man who had consumed raw, tainted crystals to force his way to the Peak of Level 1, sacrificing his humanity for brute, unyielding power.

"Burn the House of Vane to the ground," Sol repeated, his voice a low, grating rasp. "You have the men, you have the maps, and you have a Level 1 Peak core. If you could take their main Harvest House, you would have done it already. Why do you need two strays?"

Voss let out a booming laugh that rattled the loose debris in the alley. He leaned heavily on the haft of his massive double-headed warhammer, the iron head sinking an inch into the frozen cobblestone.

"Smart," Voss grunted, his visible eye narrowing with sudden, predatory calculation. "I like smart. The slums are full of strong idiots who die the second they hit inner-city armor. You’re right, butcher. I have two hundred men in Purgatory ready to die for a scrap of pure crystal. But throwing bodies at a Harvest House only gets you into the slaughter-line. It doesn’t get you into the vault."

Valera stepped forward, the frost on her boots crackling sharply in the quiet alley.

She placed a hand gently on Sol’s arm, a subtle command to hold his strike, though the icy touch sent a familiar, grounding shiver through his overheated veins.

"The Vane vaults are most likely sealed," Valera said, her tone slipping effortlessly back into the arrogant, analytical cadence of a Fyrn noble. "Forged from deep silver and powered by a continuous stream of mist. If you try to smash it with that oversized hammer, the kinetic trigger will shatter every crystal inside the vault to prevent theft. You need a key."

"Or a lockpick," Voss corrected, flashing his metal teeth.

He pointed a thick, scarred finger at Sol’s glowing blade, then at Valera. "My spies have been watching you two for two days. I saw what you did to that extortion squad. The girl freezes the ambient moisture, slowing the kinetic triggers. The butcher brings a pinpoint heat so intense it vaporizes the silver without setting off the pressure plates. You two are a walking skeleton key for inner-city vaults."

Sol glanced at Valera in the dark. He couldn’t see her face, but he could feel the sudden, sharp spike of calculation in her cold blue aura.

"And our cut?" Valera asked.

"Fifty percent of the raw meat and shards," Voss offered instantly. "And thirty percent of the pure, unregistered inner-city crystals. I need the rest to keep my captains loyal."

"No," Sol said bluntly.

Voss’s scarred brow furrowed. The chaotic purple energy around the giant flared, a silent threat of violence. "Excuse me?"

"You keep the meat," Sol said, his grip tightening on his sword. "You keep the shards. Feed your men. Build your army. I don’t care. But Valera and I take sixty percent of the pure inner-city crystals, and we get first pick of any silver-forged weapons inside that vault. You want your lockpicks to walk into a fortified Enforcer stronghold, that’s the price."

For a long, agonizing moment, the alley was completely silent save for the hissing of Sol’s blade. Voss stared at the blind butcher, his massive chest rising and falling.

Then, the Slum King threw his head back and laughed again.

"Deal," Voss barked, spitting a wad of dark phlegm onto the frozen ground. "Follow me, your majesties. Let’s go plan a robbery."

Voss led them deeper into the labyrinth of Purgatory. The deeper they descended, the more the oppressive, suffocating atmosphere of the upper slums gave way to a chaotic, desperate vibrancy.

The tunnels widened into massive subterranean caverns held up by ancient, rusted iron pillars. Makeshift bridges of scavenged wood and wire crisscrossed over glowing, toxic green chemical rivers.

Sol kept his Strobe vision active, pulsing the heat to his optic nerves in short, rhythmic flashes.

Purgatory was a sea of yellow and orange thermal signatures.

Scavengers, merchants, and crippled Cultivators huddled around burning barrels of chemical sludge. The stench was overwhelming, a mix of roasting beast meat, unwashed bodies, and the sharp, metallic tang of lunar mist.

They arrived at Voss’s command center, a massive, hollowed-out cistern fortified with scavenged Enforcer barricades.

Dozens of heavily armed, mutated slum fighters watched them walk in.

They eyed Valera with lecherous hunger and Sol with blatant contempt, but a single, warning growl from Voss kept them chained to their posts.

Inside the cistern, Voss unrolled a heavy, oil-stained map across a rusted iron table.

"Sector Four Harvest House," Voss grunted, pointing a massive finger at a crudely drawn schematic. "It’s a fortress. Solid concrete walls, iron gates, and forty Enforcers on the payroll. Tomorrow night, the Vanes are expecting a massive shipment of chained beasts from the deep wastes. The main gates will be open to receive the caravans."

"That’s when you strike," Valera said, tracing the map.

"My men will hit the caravans right as they enter the courtyard," Voss confirmed with a feral grin. "It will be a bloodbath. We’ll release the beasts, set the transport carts on fire, and draw every single Enforcer out of the inner sanctum to defend the main gates."

"Where does that leave us?" Sol asked, crossing his arms.

He kept his core burning at a low simmer, letting the ambient heat warm Valera, who was standing close enough for their shoulders to brush.

"The drainage pipes," Voss said, tracing a finger away from the main gates to the rear of the facility. "The Harvest House slaughters hundreds of beasts a day. The blood and offal have to go somewhere. There is a massive, subterranean exhaust pipe that dumps the waste directly into the deep sewers. While my men are dying at the front door, you two will crawl up the blood pipe. It leads directly into the sub-basement, right beneath the primary vault."

"Exactly," Voss said. "You breach the basement. You find the vault. You crack the Frost Lock. My strike team will hold the courtyard for exactly twenty minutes. If you aren’t out by then, the inner-city reinforcements will arrive, and you’ll be trapped inside with a hundred angry nobles."

They spent the next hour memorizing the layout, counting the theoretical guard rotations, and synchronizing the timing.

When the planning was done, Voss offered them a small, relatively clean side-chamber in the cistern to rest before the raid.
