The Smiling Death

Chapter 630 Waiting For her

  • Next Chapter

After speaking with Atlas, Amon and Arnold spent the remainder of the day keeping an eye on Sira and Alice’s house.

They continued their surveillance throughout the night, carefully observing the surroundings in case the kidnappers returned.

However, no one approached the house.

The same thing happened the following day and throughout the next night. Despite their vigilance, they didn’t spot a single suspicious figure near the house.

On the one hand, it was a relief that Alice hadn’t been targeted again.

On the other hand, it was rather disappointing that they hadn’t gotten the opportunity to capture either of the remaining kidnappers and interrogate them.

And so, another night passed, bringing them to the morning of the third day.

Amon and Arnold were now walking through the woodland near Sira’s house, heading toward a secluded spot where they could wait for Alice.

“Do you think she’ll actually come here to meet you?” Arnold asked.

Amon shook his head.

“No idea. But I hope she does. If she’s willing to tell us the truth, we might finally get a lead on what’s happening in this village.”

“I hope so, too.”

They continued walking, their boots crunching against the dry leaves scattered across the forest floor.

For a while, neither of them spoke. The morning breeze rustled through the trees, and the occasional chirping of birds broke the silence.

Then Arnold spoke again.

“But there’s something I’m worried about.”

Amon glanced at him. “What is it?”

“What if she told the villagers about you? What if they’ve already surrounded this place, waiting for us to show up?”

Amon chuckled at his companion’s concern.

“And what if they have?”

Arnold looked at him as though he were waiting for a sensible answer.

“We run, obviously!” Amon replied cheerfully. “It’s not like we’re obligated to stand around and let them arrest us.”

Arnold sighed.

Amon continued, “Besides, you should wear that mask you bought. If your little prediction turns out to be correct, we definitely don’t want anyone recognizing our faces. As for me, I’ll use the same trick I used the other night.”

With that, Amon gestured toward his face, which was currently uncovered.

Understanding what he meant, Arnold reached into his storage ring and retrieved a plain silver mask. He put it on, concealing his face, then pulled up the hood of his cloak to hide his dark blue hair.

“All right. At least this should make it harder for anyone to identify us.”

He adjusted his hood before glancing at Amon.

“By the way, where exactly did you tell her to meet you?”

Amon’s steps abruptly came to a halt.

“Um…”

He rubbed the back of his neck, a slightly awkward smile appearing on his face.

“Hehe…”

Arnold stared at him.

A moment later, he understood.

“You didn’t tell her where to meet you, did you?”

Amon immediately turned toward him.

“Of course I couldn’t! The villagers were searching for her that night! I had to get out of there as quickly as possible. Do you think I had time to give her detailed directions?”

“Yes, yes. I understand.” Arnold nodded, though his expression suggested otherwise. “You were in a hurry. It happens.”

“Exactly!”

Amon nodded emphatically, relieved that Arnold seemed to understand his predicament.

Then Arnold asked the obvious question.

“So, where should we wait?”

Amon paused for a moment before pointing farther into the woodland.

“We shouldn’t go too deep. Let’s find a place about half a kilometer from her house and wait there.”

Arnold turned to look at him.

“Half a kilometer? That’s quite far, isn’t it?”

“Nope. It’s not.”

“…All right.”

Arnold decided not to argue.

After all, considering Amon’s inability to provide proper directions, half a kilometer was probably the least of their problems.

The two continued deeper into the woodland until they found a suitable tree with thick branches and a good view of the surrounding area.

They climbed onto one of its sturdy branches and settled down to wait.

The forest remained peaceful, with sunlight filtering through the canopy and casting patches of light across the ground.

Amon leaned back against the trunk, looking remarkably relaxed.

Arnold, on the other hand, kept glancing toward the direction of the village.

Now, all they could do was wait and hope Alice would show up.

After all, she was their only promising lead.

And if she decided not to come. Well, they’d have to figure out another way to uncover the mystery surrounding Leonera Village.

—

They waited patiently as the minutes slowly turned into hours.

Gradually, the morning sunlight began to fade, and the sky took on a warm orange hue, signaling the approaching evening.

By this point, Amon had stretched himself lazily across a thick tree branch, looking as though he had all the time in the world.

Arnold, sitting on a neighboring branch, glanced toward the woodland’s entrance before letting out a sigh.

“I don’t think she’s coming. It’s already getting late, and it’ll be dark in a few hours. We can’t possibly stay here all night.”

“Yeah…” Amon replied lazily, letting out a yawn. “But let’s wait until nightfall. After that, we can head closer to her house and keep an eye on it again.”

He sounded remarkably unconcerned about their wasted time.

In truth, Amon had barely slept during the previous two nights. Between keeping watch over Alice’s house and investigating the village, he hadn’t gotten much proper rest.

Right now, all he wanted was to return to the academy, find Seraphina or Scarlett or perhaps both and fall asleep between them, surrounded by their warmth.

Just imagining himself lying comfortably between the two beautiful women, feeling their softness against his body as he drifted into a peaceful sleep, brought a silly grin to his face.

‘Ahh, what a wonderful life…’

“Hehehe~”

Amon chuckled to himself.

Arnold’s face twitched.

He slowly turned toward his companion, eyeing the grinning fool sprawled across the branch.

‘What the hell is he thinking about now?’

Judging by that ridiculous smile, Arnold could only assume that whatever was going through Amon’s head was utterly inappropriate.

He decided not to ask. Some mysteries were better left unsolved.

Just then, a small, nervous voice came from somewhere nearby.

“Is-is there a-anyone here?”

Arnold immediately turned toward the sound.

Amon’s ridiculous daydream vanished in an instant as he raised his head and looked in the same direction.

For a moment, the two exchanged glances.

“She’s here,” Arnold whispered.

Amon nodded.

“Yeah, she is.”

As he spoke, shadows began creeping across his face, gradually concealing his features beneath a mask of darkness. Only his lips and the spaces around his eyes remained visible.

With his face concealed, Amon shifted his attention toward the source of the voice.

Their guest had finally arrived.

Now, they could begin getting some answers.
