The Smiling Death
Chapter 612: What Awaiting?
While Amon was enjoying his date somewhere far away from Elarith City, something moved inside a dark basement.
"I need more!! Give it to me!! I’m hungry!!"
Somewhere far away from the academy, hidden from the eyes of ordinary people, a place was consumed by darkness.
A cold, damp basement stretched beneath the ground. The stone walls were barely visible in the darkness, and the only source of light came from a few weak lamps that did little to push back the shadows.
A voice that doesn’t sound like human echoed through the darkness.
"Is everything prepared?" Voice was deep and unsettling.
A man dressed in a spotless white robe stood several meters away. His face was partially hidden beneath his hood as he lowered his head respectfully toward a particular corner of the basement.
"Yes, M’Lord." His voice was obedient. "Your feast has been prepared. We will serve it to you soon."
There was no response from darkness. Then the darkness shifted.
"I see." The unseen creature hidden there spoke slowly.
"Good." A brief silence followed. "But I need more."
The unknown voice became colder. "Much more."
There was a hint of dissatisfaction in his tone. "I am not satisfied."
The robed man immediately bowed his head lower. "We will prepare more for you as quickly as possible, M’Lord. Next one will come soon. We will do everything for you."
"Hmm..." The creature seemed to consider his words.
"You may go." He commanded to the robe person.
"Yes, M’Lord." The man in the white robe politely reply and bowed deeply toward the darkness.
He then turned around and walked toward the staircase. His footsteps echoed softly through the basement.
Step.
Step.
Step.
As he climbed the stairs, the darkness behind him remained completely still.
He reached the top. A heavy steel door opened with a loud metallic creak.
The man stepped through.
CLANG!
The door slammed shut behind him. Silence returned after that. The basement was once again swallowed by darkness.
Then a scream suddenly erupted from somewhere above.
"ARGHHHHHH!"
A woman’s terrified voice echoed through the building.
"NO! DON’T! PLEASE DON’T BURN ME!! WHAT HAVE I DONE !! ARGHH!!!"
Her voice trembled with terror. "PLEASE! SOMEONE, HELP ME! HELP MEE!!"
Another scream followed. "AAAAAAAHHHHH!"
The sound echoed through the darkness below. T1hen came laughter.
"Hehehe..."
The creature laughed softly at first. But heearing those screams above only made its laughter louder.
"HAHAHAHAHAHA!"
The sound was vile and unnatural from inside. It felt inhuman. "More..."
Its voice trembled with excitement. "More! MORE!!"
Another scream came from above. "ARRGHH!! ARGHHHHHH!!"
The creature laughed again. "SCREAM!"
Its voice echoed throughout the basement. "SCREAM LOUDER! LET ME HEAR YOUR PAIN!"
The woman’s screams continued for some time.
Then gradually they became weaker. Until only faint, broken sounds remained.
The creature fell silent. For a moment, the basement was completely still.
Then a strange mechanism groaned somewhere above.
The ceiling in the center of the basement slowly opened. A shaft of evening sunlight poured through the opening.
After spending so long in darkness, the sudden light briefly illuminated the basement.
And something fell through the opening with a sound.
THUD!
A body crashed onto the stone floor with a loud sound. Together with it the scent of burned flesh and iron like that of blood spread in that chamber.
The body that felt was that of a woman.
Her clothes were torn and burned, and her body was covered in severe burn marks. Blood slowly spread across the cold stone beneath her. Eyes closed shut.
She twitched, she was still alive but barely. Her chest rose and fell with weak, ragged breaths.
She tried to move but nothing happened. It was all useless. Her mouth opened, but no words came out.
Only a faint, broken gasp escaped her lips.
Her face was covered in burns, making her almost unrecognizable.
She lay helplessly beneath the opening, illuminated by the fading evening sunlight.
Something moved in the darkness.
Sniff.
Sniff.
The woman’s body suddenly went rigid. A low voice came from the shadows.
"Food..." The word echoed in chamber.
There was excitement in the creature’s voice. Then it laughed.
"HAHAHA! It finally came!!"
The woman’s fingers twitched. She tried desperately to crawl away. But she had almost no strength left as her whole body burned and weakned.
A shadow moved unnaturally.
Two enormous hands suddenly emerged from the darkness. They were covered in dark-gray skin.
Long, sharp nails extended from their fingers. One hand seized the woman’s burned leg.
Her body jerked, nails of the creature dung inside her already burned flesh, drawing more blood.
The creature pulled her. The woman disappeared into the darkness as her body went sliding, leaving a a trail of blood behind of the floor.
The opening in the ceiling immediately began to close.
CLANG!
The darkness returned. There was silence, the creature or whatever it was didn’t make any sound.
Thud!
A violent movement echoed from somewhere within the shadows.
Scratch something scraped against the stone floor. Then came a wet, disturbing sound.
Munch.
Munch.
Munch.
The creature was eating. The sound continued in the darkness. Then the heavy steel door suddenly opened again.
CREEEEAK...
The man in the white robe stepped inside. He stopped. His head turned slightly as he listened to the sounds coming from the darkness.
Munch.
Munch.
He remained silent for a moment. Then, without saying a word, he turned around.
He walked back toward the staircase. Before leaving, he glanced once over his shoulder.
Nothing could be seen beyond the darkness. He quietly stepped outside.
CLANG!
The steel door closed once more. The basement was left in complete darkness. And from somewhere deep within it.
Munch.
Munch.
Munch.
While the thing there continued its feast with delight, while waiting for its next feast to come as fast as possible.
