The Smiling Death

Chapter 594: Misunderstanding

  • Next Chapter

Adelia walked over and sat beside Amon. She swallowed nervously before turning toward him.

"Why...? Why do you want to talk to me alone?"

Amon rubbed his chin while looking at her. "Well, it’s important. I can’t let anyone else hear what I’m about to tell you."

Adelia’s expression immediately froze. A sudden thought flashed through her mind.

’Is he...?’

Her eyes widened.

’No way! Is he going to confess to me?!’

Her heart gave a small, nervous beat.

Adelia was the head of the infirmary at Arcadia Academy. Although she wasn’t officially a professor who taught regular classes, she had given countless lectures to students who specialized in healing and medicine.

In a way, she was still a professor to Amon. A teacher and he was her student. Yet this young man had apparently come here to propose to her despite already having two lovers.

’How can Amon do this...? He was such a sweet child.’

Her cheeks slowly became warm. Before she could think any further, Adelia glanced toward the assistants working nearby.

"Could you bring us some coffee? And something to eat for Amon as well."

"Yes, Professor."

The assistants nodded. A short while later, the injured student finished their treatment and left the infirmary. The assistants also left to attend to other matters, leaving only Amon and Adelia in the quiet room.

Adelia’s fingers nervously rubbed against each other in her lap.

She lowered her gaze. "So... what did you want to talk about, Amon?"

Amon looked at her calmly. He had absolutely no idea what was going through her mind.

Meanwhile, Adelia’s thoughts were becoming increasingly chaotic.

’What am I supposed to say if he really confesses?’

She cared about Amon. She was close to him. She had always found him special. But did she actually love him? She didn’t know.

Before she could figure out an answer, Amon finally spoke.

"Actually... you talked to Seraphina a few weeks ago when she was troubled."

Adelia’s heart immediately began beating faster.

"She told you that I... I confessed to her."

’Yes! He’s actually going to confess to me after confessing to Seraphina!’ Her mind raced. And it came to a weird conclusion.

’What did Seraphina say? Did she reject him? Or did she accept him? If he really confesses to me... should I accept? No! I can’t! He’s my student!’

Her thoughts were completely tangled.

Amon, meanwhile, became slightly embarrassed. He looked away, his cheeks faintly red. "You see... I... I really love—"

"Amon, I think it’s too early!"

Adelia suddenly blurted out. "You are my student! You shouldn’t confess to your professor! You should at least graduate from the academy first!"

She squeezed her eyes shut as she said it, completely convinced that she had just stopped Amon from making a terrible mistake.

Silence spread in whole infirmary.

Adelia slowly opened one eye. She couldn’t hear a response. She opened both eyes.

Amon was staring at her. His jaw was practically hanging open.

"..."

Adelia stared back.

’Dear Goddess... is he shocked? Is he sad? I didn’t exactly rejected him...’

"A-Amon, are you okay?" Amon finally closed his mouth. "Professor Adelia..."

He rubbed his face, clearly flustered. "You’ve misunderstood something."

"Huh?"

"Dammit..."

He took a breath. "What I meant was that I really love Seraphina. I confessed to her, and she accepted."

Adelia’s eyes widened.

"And... I hope you won’t tell anyone about it." He looked at her seriously. "I really trust you, Professor Adelia."

"..."

Adelia went completely blank. For a moment, she didn’t move. Her cheeks turned bright red.

"Ah..."

She immediately covered her face with both hands. She wanted nothing more than to find a hole in the ground and disappear into it.

’Oh, Goddess... what was I thinking?! He was going to talk about something completely different, and I already assumed he came here to confess to me! What was I expecting?!’

"Hahaha!"

Her chaotic thoughts were suddenly interrupted by Amon’s laughter. Adelia slowly lowered her hands and looked at him.

Amon was laughing openly now.

"W-Why are you laughing?!"

Her face was still flushed with embarrassment.

Amon finally managed to calm himself down. He looked at her with an amused smile.

"Professor Adelia, what were you even thinking?"

He shook his head.

"How could I do something like that? Don’t think of me as some kind of womanizer."

’Aren’t you one?’

Adelia wanted to say it. But she wisely kept her mouth shut. Instead, Amon looked at her flushed face and chuckled.

"And you really looked so adorable just now."

"Amon, enough!"

Adelia covered part of her face again, embarrassed. But then another realization hit her.

’Wait...’

Her expression slowly changed.

’Seraphina actually accepted?’

Her eyes widened.

’That means... she and Amon are actually in a relationship?!’

She stared at Amon in disbelief. The more she thought about it, the more shocked she became.

’When did this happen?! And how can Seraphina accept when Amon already had a lover?’

---

Amon kept looking at her. To him, Adelia was the best professor he had ever met.

’I’ve completely ruined my image in her eyes. She probably thinks I’m some womanizer who confesses his feelings to one girl after another. First Seraphina, and now her...’

Amon felt a little sad. What had happened wasn’t exactly right, but he still hoped Adelia wouldn’t start looking at him differently.

"Professor Adelia, you won’t tell anyone about this, right?"

"Yes... I won’t. So don’t worry, okay?"

Amon nodded in relief.

"Thank you, Professor. You’re the best!"

He smiled widely.

Adelia also seemed to relax as she looked at his smile. For some reason, seeing him smile like that seemed to ease her own worries.

"If Seraphina is okay with it, then I don’t think I have the right to interfere in whatever relationship you two have."

"Yes. It’s good to see you’re back to your normal self."

Amon smiled awkwardly.

’Well... at least she doesn’t seem flustered and uncomfortable anymore.’

"Thank you so much Professor."

He decided to spend some more time with her.
