Gasp.

The breath was violently stolen from Florianthum’s throat.

Her body moved in a sudden, violent jerk. Her spine snapped straight, her thighs slamming against the edge of the heavy table with a sharp, echoing thump.

Her right arm flared outward in a blind, instinctive spasm, the edge of her crimson glove striking the stem of a white rose resting at the corner of the grand table.

Fwip.

The heavy bloom was launched from the wood. It spun through the tense air, dropping like a stone.

Clack.

The sound of the flower hitting the crystalline floor was unexpectedly loud. A few bruised, white petals tore away from the stem, scattering across the polished surface like broken glass.

Her wide eyes stared blindly at the empty throne. The decorative smile she had worn a second ago shattered completely, leaving her jaw stiff.

Deep within the locked vault of her mind, her thoughts fractured into panicked pieces, struggling to process the sound.

Is that...

Her heart hammered wildly against her ribs.

No... It couldn’t be!

It is fundamentally impossible.

The silence in the room stretched thin, suffocating her. To pull a soul back from the very threshold of the void?

The logic of her entire existence screamed against it. To mend a shattered vessel completely? It violates every absolute law of the world.

She stared at the darkness, her chest heaving slightly as she waited for the shadow to move.

No matter who you are, it is not possible.

To siphon and channel that much raw, world-bending energy... just to force a revival?

The sheer reality of it made her stomach turn.

The sheer cost alone should have torn his own core to bleeding ribbons.

Yet, the voice echoed in her ears, terrifyingly real.

Unless...

A sickening realization settled deep in her gut.

Unless he didn’t care about the cost.

Tug. Twist.

The invisible, barbed wire of the contract sensed the explosive spike in her heartbeat. It tightened like a noose around her lungs, a burning reminder that she was being monitored.

Control it, the tether demanded. Breathe.

She forced her chest to lower, her trembling, crimson-gloved hand slowly pulling back from the edge of the table. She kept her eyes locked on the velvet dark behind the throne, waiting.

The dark expanse behind the empty throne stretched out like a hungry maw, the blue candlelight dying completely at its border.

Florianthum did not hesitate. She didn’t let herself reason through the danger.

Clack.

Her heavy midnight-velvet gown swept across the crystal floor as she stepped away from the diamond chair, walking directly toward the shadows.

Her movements were a fluid, deliberate glide, her body coiled tight like a spring.

Step.

The dim blue light glinted off the tiny diamond shards embedded in her bodice, flashing like dying stars with every movement of her chest.

Step.

She entered the threshold of the dark. The ambient warmth of the candlelit hall instantly vanished, replaced by an unnatural, biting chill that seeped right through her crimson gloves.

The thick, suffocating stench of the rotting white roses faded, swallowed by the scent of old stone and frozen dust.

She pressed deeper, her eyes straining against the absolute blackness. She reached the exact center of the dark spot... the very origin point of the voice.

Nothing.

The space was hollow. Cold stone walls, empty air, and dead silence.

Her breath exhaled in a faint, trembling hiss. She turned her head, her sharp eyes scanning the shifting velvet curtains behind the throne.

Right beside her ear, a smooth, low cadence shattered the void.

"You followed me?"

Florianthum’s knuckles turned white within her crimson gloves as she stared into the empty, cold stone corner.

The echo of the voice still vibrated right beside her ear, yet the air was entirely hollow. Suddenly, a bizarre, suffocating pressure dropped from the cavernous ceiling.

The unnatural chill of the dark spot was instantly shattered.

CRASH.

The heavy velvet curtains behind the obsidian throne were violently torn aside as a body came flying through the air, thrown with such immense force it looked like a discarded sack of grain.

Thud--- scrrrch!

The body hit the crystalline floor hard, sliding fast across the polished surface until it slammed directly into Florianthum’s feet, jarring her ankles.

It was Fukuro.

He lay there for a second, trembling from head to toe, a faint, pathetic wheeze escaping his lungs.

His clothes were shredded, and his face was entirely caked in gray floor dust, smudged with dark streaks where he had clearly been trampled.

He looked less like he had been in a proper fight and more like he had been brutally caught under the stampede of an entire regiment’s iron boots.

Twitching violently, Fukuro pushed himself up onto his elbows. He reached up with two shaking fingers, adjusting his crooked, circular spectacles which were smeared with grease and sitting dangerously sideways across his nose.

He looked directly up at Florianthum, his wide eyes shining with a frantic, desperate terror.

"Madam... save me..." he whimpered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic squeak as he grabbed a fistful of her heavy midnight-velvet gown.

Florianthum’s mind stalled. The sheer absurdity of the sight briefly short-circuited her panic. Without thinking, her maternal instincts overrode the rigid protocol of the mask.

She dropped to one knee, her crimson-gloved hand coming down onto his head.

Her fingers sank into his messy, dust-covered hair, smoothing it down automatically...treating him exactly like a terrified child who had just run home from a playground beating.

Pat. Pat.

But the tenderness lasted only a fraction of a second. Realization hit her like a bucket of ice water. If Fukuro is here, thrown like a piece of garbage...

Her head snapped up. Her sharp eyes darted here and there, scanning the cavernous room, cutting through the dense, candlelit haze of rotting white roses.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed from the gloom just a few paces behind her.

Out of the deep shadows of the entry threshold, a massive silhouette closed the distance.

The heavy scent of iron-tainted leather and ozone rolled forward, preceding the man like a physical wave.

Governor Kerwon stepped into the flickering blue candlelight, his broad shoulders casting a monstrous shadow across the crystalline floor.

His steel pauldrons gave a slow, rigid clank as he stopped just a few feet away, his sharp, scanning eyes looking down at the pathetic heap at Florianthum’s feet with absolute disgust.

Governor Kerwon stopped exactly two paces away, his massive boots coming to a dead halt against the cold crystal floor.

The heavy, metallic smell of his iron-tainted leather rolled over them in the dark.

With a slow, rhythmic clank of his steel pauldrons, he lowered his heavy frame into a shallow, rigid bow toward her.

Clank.

Florianthum rose to her full height. Her midnight-velvet gown rippled around her like dark water, the diamond shards along her bodice scraping coldly against her skin.

Behind her, Fukuro scrambled backward on his hands and knees, frantically burying his face into the heavy folds of her dress, using her skirt as a human shield as he trembled violently.

She cast a brief, sharp glance down at the pathetic, dust-covered heap hiding behind her.

Then, her eyes snapped back up, leveling directly into Kerwon’s gaze.

"What is the meaning of this, Governor?"

Florianthum said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register that cut through the silent hall.

"Look at the hour. Have you forgotten what tonight is for? By what authority are you dragging Fukuro like a filth into His Majesty’s private dining hall right before the feast?"

Kerwon didn’t flinch. Instead, a small, dark smirk pulled at the corner of his mouth.

Chuckle.

A low, rumbling sound escaped his throat. He raised the back of his massive, gauntleted palm, casually brushing it against his lips to mask the amusement dancing in his eyes.

In an instant, the smirk vanished. He snapped back into his usual, impossibly rigid composure... his broad shoulders square, his armored posture flawless, his skin catching the sickly blue glare of the flickering candles.

He lowered his hand. But when he opened his mouth, the low, resonant baritone of Governor Kerwon was entirely gone.

"Always so formal when the lord is supposed to be around, my Lordess ," a smooth, dry cadence drifted forward.

"You used to be a much better liar back when we had fewer strings attached to us... But now with Fukuro and that vampire-"

The words didn’t just hang in the air... they shattered the world around her.

It sounded like Cassius.

The exact, unmistakable tone. The specific, casual rhythm of a man who had faced the abyss and laughed at it.

Thump.

Florianthum’s heart gave a violent, agonizing kick against her ribs.

The realization slammed into her mind with the force of a physical blow, turning her entire body completely numb.

It was him.

The giant silhouette at the threshold... the sharp, scanning eyes tracking her jaw... the mocking words about the dress fitting a ’perfect subject’...

It wasn’t Governor Kerwon. It might had been Cassius the entire time.

The relief was a trap.

For one single, agonizing heartbeat, the icy tension in Florianthum’s chest began to thaw. Her shoulders softened by a fraction of a millimeter.

Her lips parted, a desperate, unspoken name rising to the back of her throat.

Then, a cold, mechanical instinct slammed the brakes on her heart.

No.

Her gaze swept over the massive, unyielding silhouette of the Governor. Her sharp eyes caught the subtle, rigid rhythm of his chest- the specific, unhurried breath of a seasoned predator.

Cassius was clever, but he was reckless. He carried a heavy, chaotic warmth even in the darkest rooms.

This man didn’t. This was the precise, disciplined weight of a royal executioner.

It was a test. A horrific, meticulously crafted script.

Lord Vilucious hadn’t just given her a dress tonight; he had set a stage.

He had sent Kerwon out here with a stolen voice, throwing a battered Fukuro at her feet as a catalyst, all to see if her perfect mask would crack.

The soul-contract wasn’t just measuring her pulse; it was waiting for her to betray herself.

Forget him, her inner voice commanded, burying the memory of Cassius into the deepest, darkest vault of her mind.

He is dead. He is gone. This world is a meat grinder, and you are the blade.

In the span of a single breath, the phantom warmth vanished from her eyes, replaced by twin shards of lethal ice.

She didn’t let the sigh escape. She didn’t let her fingers tremble. She locked the armor back into place, her spine snapping into a line of rigid, aristocratic perfection.

She looked at the giant masquerading before her, her expression completely hollowed out.

"A pathetic parlor trick, Governor," Florianthum said, her voice rising into the high arches like a flat, melodic chime.

"Did His Majesty truly command you to play the mimic tonight, or are you simply growing desperate for my attention?"

She stepped forward, her midnight-velvet gown sweeping over the crystal floor with a sharp rustle, completely ignoring the trembling Fukuro clutching at her hem.

She closed the distance, staring directly up into Kerwon’s imposing face.

"My beloved Lord expects his valuables to be properly polished before the feast, and that includes the guard at the door."

Her gaze sharpened as she spoke further.

"I would hate for him to find you... out of character! And also what your deeds talking with respect to Fukuro..."
