Chapter 90: When the Vampire King Says "Dismissed" But You’re on the Floor

Slosh. Chomp. Slosh.

Down in the dark pool, the initial explosion of white foam began to settle, but the water didn’t clear. Instead, a thick, unnatural hue began to bleed outward from the center of the thrashing vortex.

It wasn’t the crimson of ordinary mortals or the dark, curdled fluid of normal humans. It was a deep, luminescent violet.

The alien liquid uncoiled like thick smoke beneath the surface, clouding the murky depths until the entire subterranean lake turned a heavy, glowing purple.

The prehistoric crocodiles thrashed through the neon-tinged wake, their rough, armored scales slick with the glowing residue of Cassius’s blood.

The harsh overhead lights caught the shimmering, violet ripples, casting a surreal, sickly lavender glow across the damp masonry of the vault walls and up onto the frozen face of Lord Vilucious.

Down in the deepest shadows, pressed so flat against the cold stone his chest ached, Fukuro was experiencing what could only be described as a spiritual exit from his own body.

His eyes, blown out so wide the whites showed all around his iris, stared fixedly at the mop handle resting dead center under the artificial glare. He didn’t dare blink.

He didn’t dare breathe. His spine vibrated with a terrifyingly frantic tremor.

Slowly, with the agonizing stiffness of a rusted machine, he began to pull his outstretched fingers back into the darkness.

He curled his toes inside his boots, trying to make himself physically smaller, wishing with every fiber of his being that he could dissolve into the literal bedrock.

"Oh, great ancestors of the broom," Fukuro murmured, his voice a breathless, microscopic squeak that barely cleared his own lips.

His jaw trembled so violently his teeth clicked like loose dice.

"I am a shadow. I am a speck of dust. I am not a-"

He squeezed his eyes shut, his hands coming up to grip his own hair as he tilted his head back against the damp granite.

Please let the giant armored lizard man think it was a very loud, very talented ghost. His mind screaming the words louder as the shock he got was brutal.

He started to whisper non human language to himself slowly, his throat burning as he swallowed hard, trying to force his heart down out of his throat.

If they look down here, I am legally dead like my bird. My soul has already left the premises. I am just a very sweaty corpse.

He opened one eye, peering through the gap in his fingers toward the dais where Kerwon’s massive, gauntleted silhouette stood.

Fukuro’s knees knocked together once, a soft thud against the stone, prompting him to instantly lock his joints in a fresh wave of sheer, unadulterated panic.

The chaotic churning of the purple lake slowly began to establish a steady, rhythmic cadence.

Slosh. Chomp. Slosh.

Up on the stone dais, the rigid, suffocating tension that had paralyzed Lord Vilucious finally cracked. The tight, defensive terror that had grippedOhis sharp features melted away into a wave of pure, intoxicating relief.

His light grey, water like eyes drank in the sight of the glowing violet lake, watching the neon ripples reflect off the dark vault walls. The defect was gone. The poison in his ears had been swallowed by the deep.

A slow, deliberate breath expanded his chest beneath the heavy velvet robes. His long, pale fingers uncurled from his sleeves, and a sharp, razor-thin smirk carved its way across his pale face.

He looked down at the empty pit, his voice returning with its full, smooth, conversational purr: dripping with absolute, uncontested dominance.

"Let the shadows wash clean what the light refuses to claim,"

Vilucious announced, his tone echoing off the wet masonry with the heavy weight of an empire.

As soon as the final syllable left the monarch’s lips, a heavy, rhythmic shifting broke the silence of the dais.

Clank. Clank. Clank.

Kerwon moved. Despite the crushing weight of his thick gauntlets and massive armor, the giant vanguard walked toward the King with a terrifying, fluid grace... like a predatory cat encased in steel.

His bare, tanned face remained an unblinking mask of pure discipline.

As he closed the distance, Vilucious’s light grey eyes darted upward, instantly noticing his governor’s approach.

The King didn’t flinch, but his posture went rigidly alert. He reached into the folds of his robes and drew the small, ornate ear device- the golden trumpet-styled instrument designed to maintain his absolute, untouchable distance from the rest of the court.

Vilucious brought the golden piece to his ear just as Kerwon halted exactly at the permissible boundary.

Without bending his spine, maintaining the flawless, rigid posture of a true governor, Kerwon leaned his head just enough for his voice to carry directly into the device.

His tone was a low, resonant baritone, perfectly steady, projecting the absolute discipline of a military vanguard who served the crown before his own life.

"Your Majesty," Kerwon whispered into the golden transmitter, his eyes scanning the court to ensure no one else could track the movement of his lips.

"The arrangements proceed exactly to your design."

He paused, his scanning slits shifting slightly toward the dark edges of the vault.

"As you previously commanded," Kerwon continued, his tone dropping an octave to maintain total secrecy,

"...the banquet is prepared."

The heavy scent of ozone and iron-tainted mist rolled up from the pit, swirling around the governor’s thick boots.

"The feast awaits your presence," Kerwon spoke on, his chest rising as he drew breath to detail the structural security reports next,

"...and that of the Lordess. Furthermore, the vanguard transit logistics are-"

Before the next syllable could leave the governor’s lips, Lord Vilucious smoothly raised a single, pale finger.

With a slow, deliberate movement that carried the absolute weight of a command, the King lowered the golden ear device from his face.

The elegant gesture cut Kerwon off instantly, freezing the giant vanguard mid-sentence in perfect discipline.

The King didn’t look back at the pit where the purple water still lapped against the stone. He didn’t look at the frozen vanguards.

He simply stared ahead into the vast, damp emptiness of the vault, his voice dropping to a microscopic, feather-light whisper that barely stirred the humid air around the dais.

"You can continue it later," Vilucious said very slowly, a faint, chilling amusement dancing in his light grey eyes.

"Today is a very nice day."

Lord Vilucious turned his back to the pit. With a single, sharp flick of his large velvet sleeve, he made a gesture that was utterly dismissive, treating the entire execution like dirt scraped off his royal shoe.

"Dismissed," the King purred, the word carrying a casual, savage coldness that sliced through the chamber.

Clack-whump!

The command hit the tranced vanguard like an electric shock. In perfect, terrifying unison, the entire military force snapped into motion.

The firing squads, the armored elites, and the massive vanguard units turned on their heels, their boots striking the granite floor like a single sledgehammer.

THUD. THUD. THUD.

They didn’t look left. They didn’t look right.

Bound by the heavy golden magic, their eyes remained locked dead ahead, a wave of moving steel and unblinking trances marching directly toward the exit vaults.

They were a tunnel-visioned wall of flesh and iron.

Down in the deepest shadows, Fukuro didn’t even have time to scream.

The heavy, metallic wall of soldiers surged forward, blindly trampling the dark corners. A massive, steel-toed boot caught Fukuro right in the ribs.

OOF!

The air violently left his lungs as he was thrown out of the shadows, his body crashing hard against the rough, wet granite.

Before he could even draw a breath, another armored boot slammed directly onto his outstretched hand.

CRUNCH.

"Ah! Sweet ancestors of pain!" Fukuro wheezed, his face flattening against the dirt.

He tried to scramble backward, his fingers clawing desperately at the stone, but the mindless march didn’t stop. They didn’t even notice him.

A heavy pauldrons clipped his shoulder, spinning him like a top, while another boot kicked his thigh, sending him sprawling face-first into the grime right next to his rolling mop handle.

He was completely trapped beneath the stampede, treated no better than a loose piece of gravel.

Clank. Thud. Stamp.

"I am trash,"

Fukuro groaned into the floorboards of the stone, his cheek pressed against a puddle of iron-tainted water.

He pushed his palms against the ground, his arms shaking like twigs as he tried to lift his torso, only for a passing scabbard to whack him in the back of the head. Whack.

He collapsed right back down with a pathetic splat.

"I am literal, actual janitorial garbage," he whimpered, a tear of pure humiliation mixing with the dirt on his nose.

He curled into a tight, pathetic ball, squeezing his eyes shut as the heavy boots continued to scrape past inches from his ears.

Thud. Crunch. Stamp.

"They aren’t..."

Oof! A heavy heel slammed between his shoulder blades.

"...even executing me," Fukuro wheezed into the dirt.

Crack. A massive steel pauldron clipped his skull.

"They’re just..." He sucked in a ragged breath.

"...walking on me."

Thump-thump. Two boots kicked his hip, dragging him through the grime.

"I’m a... human doormat," Fukuro whimpered, his teeth clicking against the stone. "A very... sweaty..."

Squulch. A heavy sole ground right over his bruised palm.

"...highly expendable... floor rug."

He squeezed his eyes shut as the final line of moving steel surged over his head.

"Welcome to the... Raw Court," he gasped in a tragic squeak. "Please... wipe your muddy boots... on Fukuro..."
