The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse
Chapter 69: A Messenger’s Truce and Flamingo Feather
Fukuro’s legs seemed to have lost their bones. He turned toward the narrow, broken exit, his boots dragging through the thick soot as if he were wading through wet cement.
Every inch of his movement was agonizingly slow. He looked less like a theatrical performer now and more like a beaten alley cat, his shoulders hunched so high his neck had completely vanished into the collar of his shirt.
Halfway to the threshold, he stopped.
Without moving his torso, Fukuro twisted his neck around, his head pivoting back toward the dark recess like an owl looking for an escape route. His lopsided glasses slid a little further down his nose. He didn’t speak a word, he didn’t dare to... but his face did all the groveling for him.
His eyes widened behind the smudged lenses, his lower lip trembling just enough to show the edge of his teeth, and his eyebrows pinched together in a silent, pathetic plea. Don’t make me do this.
Cassius didn’t blink. He sat perfectly still in the shadows, his massive frame anchored against the shredded stone wall like an iron anvil. His slate-grey eyes caught the faint, greasy light, locking onto Fukuro with a heavy, unyielding pressure. There was no sympathy in that gaze, no room for negotiation, and absolutely no going back. It was a stare that could have pinned a wild beast to the dirt.
Fukuro let out a tiny, high-pitched whine from the back of his throat; a sound usually reserved for small, cornered rodents, before his head snapped back toward the dark corridor.
He took another miserable step forward, his hand reaching out to gingerly grip the damp edge of the broken exit, preparing to face whatever was going to occur on the other side of this base.
Before Fukuro could take another dragging step, a cold blade hissed out of the dark, catching him right beneath the chin. The sharp steel bit into his throat, forcing him forward into the gloom as Floriantum effortlessly pulled him toward her.
She leaned close, her voice a terrifyingly smooth whisper. "Speak, Fukuro. I don’t expect indiscipline from your side."
Fukuro’s throat clicked against the freezing steel, his knees shaking so violently they knocked together.
"M-M-Madam," he wheezed, his eyes bulging as he tried to pull his chin away from the edge.
"C-c-c-Cassius is saying that... m-m-madam, I—I swear, he has completely lost his mind in the dark!"
Floriantum’s knuckles turned white as she twisted the hilt, the cold edge biting a fraction deeper into his skin.
The physical threat didn’t break Fukuro; it reset him. The frantic, sweating coward vanished. His spine went perfectly straight, and his eyes cleared, taking on the cold, flat precision of the professional clerk he actually was.
"Madam," Fukuro said, his voice dropping into a smooth, measured cadence, completely stripped of the stammer.
"The man you wish to support demands the military protocols straight from your mouth. It is his design. He believes no harm will come of this, even if Lord Vilucious catches wind of it."
He didn’t blink, his gaze locking onto hers with absolute bureaucratic focus. Fukuro paused slightly, letting the weight of the name hang in the damp air.
"The narrative will frame this as Cassius’s independent rogue action, leaving you merely trapped in his wake. We all remain insulated."
He leaned a fraction of an inch closer to the steel.
"When the Lord Sovereign moves to eliminate him for the breach... and he will... Cassius already has a counter-strategy mapp-"
"Enough," Floriantum cut him off, her voice striking the dark corridor like ice hitting stone.
The single word killed the air between them.
The sharp edge of her blade remained perfectly still against his throat, pinning the rest of his sentence behind his teeth before he could even draw breath to finish it.
"You know I trust you, Fukuro," Floriantum murmured, her gaze holding his with an unsettling softness. "And you know that I could never bring myself to end your life."
She slowly tilted the hilt of her sword, but the razor edge didn’t leave his skin. It just hovered there, a freezing reminder of her mercy.
"But if even the slightest misstep occurs... something that compromises the understanding of our friendship..."
She paused, letting the damp chill of the passage settle into his bones.
"I will ensure you survive long enough to regret every breath you ever took. Because this is to spare all of our lives here, Fukuro. Not only mine, or yours."
Fukuro’s clerk-like composure instantly fractured, his eyes widening as he stared down at the glinting steel.
"M-M-Madam," he stammered, his hands flying up in a frantic, open-palmed gesture of surrender, his voice cracking on the vowels. "I... I am j-just a messenger. I don’t support this at all."
He paused, his jaw working as he swallowed hard, the distinct sound of his own saliva gulping down his tight, dry throat echoing in the quiet corridor.
Then, drawing on whatever shred of dignity he had left, he forced his shoulders back. He looked straight into her eyes, his tone suddenly striking a chord of absolute, desperate confidence.
"I am merely delivering the pieces, not playing the board."
With that final word, Fukuro carefully, deliberately took a slow step backward, easing his chin away from the freezing bite of the weapon.
Floriantum didn’t follow him.
Instead, she smoothly rotated her wrist, letting the tip of the blade drop toward the floor. With effortless grace, she slid the polished steel back into the scabbard hanging from her belt, the metal clicking shut with a single, crisp snap that signaled the immediate danger had passed.
Floriantum’s hand remained rested on the pommel of her scabbard, but her focus abruptly drifted away from Fukuro. Her sharp eyes cut directly past his silhouette, locking onto the deep gloom of the doorway behind him.
Fukuro caught the sudden shift in her glare. Instantly alert, he tracked the direction of her gaze and spun around to look behind himself.
The moment his eyes found the shadows, a violent shiver rippled through Fukuro’s entire frame, his shoulders jolting with a visible tremor.
Cassius was standing right there. The clever vampire was leaning heavily against a rotting structural pillar, his massive arms folded tightly across his broad chest, his frame bent just enough to fit under the low ceiling.
Fukuro’s panic flared instantly. Without uttering a single word, he began throwing out wild, frantic body gestures: his hands cutting through the air, his eyebrows pitching upward, and his head tilting sharply toward Floriantum as if desperately screaming in mime, Did you hear that? Did you listen to everything?
Cassius didn’t break his calm posture. Slowly, nonchalantly, the nonchalant vampire raised one heavy hand off his chest and gave a tiny, dismissive wave... a clear no signal gesture.
Then, with a slight, completely unbothered nod of his head, he stated that he hadn’t heard a single syllable.
Cassius didn’t look at Floriantum. Instead, he uncurled one massive, calloused index finger from his chest and gave a lazy, downward hook of his hand, a silent, commanding gesture for Fukuro to get over to him.
Fukuro didn’t hesitate. He immediately sprinted across the rotting timber, his boots skidding through the soot as he hurried back into the safety of the giant’s shadow.
Eager to catch whatever secret was coming, Fukuro instantly pushed himself up onto the very tips of his toes, straining his neck and leaning his ear right toward Cassius’s face.
Cassius’s jaw tightened. He looked down at the frantic clerk, his brow furrowing with a heavy, deadpan look that screamed, What the hell are you doing?
He didn’t hide his annoyance at Fukuro’s exaggerated, bird-like posture, tilting his head back slightly just to get away from the man’s desperate ear.
After a beat of pure visual judgment, Cassius leaned down just an inch. He let his lips hover near Fukuro’s messy hair, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly vibration that barely disturbed the dust in the air.
He whispered something short and quiet right into the clerk’s ear.
The moment the last syllable left Cassius’s lips, Fukuro snapped out of his tiptoe stance. Without looking back at Floriantum, he spun on his heel and sprinted deep into the darkest bend of the secret basement.
His frantic footsteps hammered toward the ruined library area. A sharp scratch of old drawers being yanked open and the dry rustle of forgotten records echoed out from the gloom.
A few seconds later, Fukuro emerged from the dust cloud, breathless. Clutched in his hands were a small vial of ink and a single sheet of old, unwritten paper. He hurried back and thrust the supplies right into Cassius’s palms.
Cassius didn’t accepted the supplies. He just stared down at Fukuro’s hands, his eyes hardening with pure, heavy disappointment.
Fukuro froze. His eyes drifted to the vial and the blank sheet, tracking his own blunder. A nervous, sheepish chuckle escaped his throat; a high, rattling sound that bounced awkwardly off the damp area.
With a jerky nod of apology, he spun on his heel. His boots skidded violently across the rotting timber as he sprinted straight back into the pitch-black library to fix the mistake.
A few seconds later, Fukuro came barreling back out of the library dust, a look of absolute triumph plastered across his face.
He slid to a halt and proudly held out his new discovery: a long, garish, bright pink flamingo feather quill. It looked like it belonged on a wealthy merchant’s vanity, complete with a plastic-looking glitter coating along the spine that caught the greasy cellar light in the most ridiculous way possible.
Cassius stared at the pink monstrosity hovering an inch from his chest. His expression didn’t change, but his jaw muscle ticked so hard a tiny vein popped up near his temple.
Fukuro’s proud grin faltered. He looked at the flamingo feather, then up at Cassius’s soot-stained fist, and gave another weak, apologetic little chuckle.
Without waiting for Cassius to speak, Fukuro took a slow, deliberate step back, dipped the ridiculous pink tip straight into the black ink vial, and held the entire setup out together like a pathetic peace offering.
Fukuro came sprinting back out of the darkness, completely bypassing Cassius. His boots clattered against the damp floorboards as he threw himself right toward Floriantum, chest heaving.
"Madam,"
Fukuro panted, his voice a sharp, urgent whisper as he leaned toward her. "He wishes to speak with the Kingdom’s mighty Lordess... directly, and without delay."
