The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse
Chapter 57: Worshiping Shadow: First Rule of Sovereignty
The rustle of the satin sheets settling over Florianthum’s chest was the loudest sound left in the room.
Cassius did not look back down at her. He kept his hand suspended for a beat, his finger still warm from the brief contact with her lips, before letting his arm drop to his side. The movement was entirely loose, the posture of a man standing in a tavern rather than a king’s inner sanctum.
The smoky ink bleeding from his blacked-out eyes didn’t flare with effort; it simply drifted, leaving faint, gray stains against the heavy royal air before evaporating.
Lord Vilucious had not shifted his stance. The heavy purple tendril on his shoulder hummed, its violet light pulsing in sync with the slow, rhythmic beat of his own pulse. His silver-grey eyes followed the trajectory of Cassius’s hand with the detached curiosity of a scholar watching an insect crawl across a map. The silence stretched between them like a wire pulled near to snapping, dense with the metallic tang of old, stagnant sorcery and the hot, heavy scent of sweat.
Cassius turned fully away from the bed, his bare soles pivoting against the polished white marble. He expected the king to strike. He expected the glacial calm in those silver irises to shatter into a sudden, lethal tempest of royal magic.
He braced his weight, sinking slightly into his hips, preparing for the sheer kinetic violence like a ruler who had not lost a battle in centuries.
Instead, he faced a very unexpected situation.
From the high, shadowed canopy of the royal bed, a flash of pristine white fur erupted like a launched arrow. It wasn’t a soldier, nor was it a construct of purple light.
It was Vermonia.
The white Persian cat, usually a pampered, silent ornament of the court, came flying through the violet gloom. Her spine was arched into a rigid, furious crescent, her tail puffed to three times its normal size, and her front paws were thrown wide.
In the dim light, her unsheathed claws gleamed like rows of tiny, curved needles, slicing through the air straight toward Cassius’s face with a ferocious, unblinking hatred.
"That dumb, big-mouthed idiot-"
The sentence tore out of Cassius before he could stop it, his lazy composure instantly evaporating into pure, startled disbelief.
The trajectory of the chaotic skirmish had broken. Vermonia, thrown off balance by Cassius’s sudden disappearance, was still sailing through the air with her claws extended, completely out of control. Her furious, blinding arc was headed straight toward the bed.
She was about to land directly on top of Florianthum, who was lying defenceless on the mattress just behind where Cassius had been standing a millisecond prior.
"Vermonia! Watch!" Florianthum shouted as soon as she looked toward the terrifying situation, her voice cracking with a high, panicked edge.
Before the panicked cry could even fully leave her throat, the air in the room warped violently. Lord Vilucious came right in front of her like a flash too, answering her distress with the terrifying, instantaneous speed of a true predator. He didn’t just step between them; he materialized out of thin air, a blinding, heavy crest of his own royal blue aura exploding outward from his frame.
The sheer weight of the blue light slammed against the remaining purple dark of the room, instantly rewriting the gravity around the mattress.
The violent momentum of the flying white cat died instantly.
Vilucious stood absolutely tall, his posture rigid and commanding. His eyes were looking straight down at the prestigious marble floor, cold and completely detached from the frantic rush of adrenaline that had just gripped the chamber.
Cradled securely against his chest, Vermonia was suddenly calm in his hands, resting against his royal garments as if nothing had happened at all.
On the mattress, Florianthum’s hazel eyes were squeezed tightly closed. She had pulled the fine satin sheets over half of her face in a frantic, desperate hurry, burying herself beneath the luxury fabric to shut out the incoming strike.
The delicate skin of her forehead was tense, the muscles bunched tight with the sudden, harrowing reminder of the attack that had almost torn into her flesh.
Far from the bed area, Cassius’s pitch-black eyes widened as he instinctively raised both hands, his fingers clawing at the empty air in a desperate attempt to manifest his shadows when he saw Vermonia sailing toward Florianthum.
"There are two rules in my kingdom," Vilucious’s voice cut through the freezing air, flat and entirely calm. His silver eyes remained fixed on the pristine white marble floor, his posture unyielding and rigid as he cradled the now-quiet cat against his chest.
"The first is that you are required to worship even my shadow."
Cassius let out a sharp, breathless laugh, lowering his hands as his gaze locked onto the king. "Is that a rule or a delusion? Don’t bother with the second; I don’t even want to hear it."
The air seemed to solidify as Vilucious kept speaking, his voice carrying an unhurried, lethal cadence.
"I see your arm is back," Lord Vilucious murmured, the words dropping like heavy weights into the freezing stillness of the chamber.
Slowly, the king slid his eyelids upward to look directly at Cassius. The sight was jarring- his eyes had transformed into completely white, blank voids, entirely devoid of irises or pupils. They offered no reflection, only a blinding, featureless expanse of raw power that seemed to warp the very light around him.
Far across the room, Cassius’s pitch-black eyes instantly widened with a sudden, primitive flash of fear. In a chaotic heartbeat, the unnatural darkness bleeding from his gaze broke apart, snapping violently back into his normal, dark grey human eyes.
A wave of profound confusion washed over his face, his dense muscles instantly tensing as the weight of an ancient, overwhelming pressure locked his limbs in place.
"That’s-"
The word was nothing more than a slow, ragged whisper scraping out of the back of his throat, cut short by the sheer gravity of what he was looking at.
Florianthum’s hazel eyes widened, peering out from behind the king’s broad shoulders as she witnessed something she never thought possible.
For the first time since this nightmare began, Cassius: the unstoppable intruder who had just carried her effortlessly and mocked the crown- was losing his grip. His tight posture was slackening, his sharp movements giving way to a raw, visible confusion and a flickering, mild fear in the presence of the king.
Though her throat remained completely locked, preventing her from speaking a single word, her face betrayed the chaotic rush of her thoughts.
The tight line of her jaw softened just enough for her mouth to part in a silent, breathless gasp. The absolute terror that had gripped her just moments ago shifted into a stunned, morbid fascination.
Her gaze darted rapidly between the towering, unyielding back of Vilucious and the unraveling composure of the man across the room.
There was no triumph in her expression yet- only the pale, wide-eyed look of someone watching a legendary god finally step down from the tapestries to crush a mortal beneath his heel.
Zoop---
Without a sound, a violent, blinding eruption of white flash tore directly into Cassius’s eyes.
The light didn’t just blind him; it felt completely solid, striking his senses with the impact of a physical blow. The absolute radiance shattered his reality in a single, chaotic frame, and in the next heartbeat, the solid stone floor beneath his bare feet vanished entirely.
He was suddenly drowning, plunging downward into the crushing, freezing depth of an endless ocean.
An impossible volume of dark water materialized out of nothing, filling the massive royal bedroom chamber from floor to ceiling. The heavy, pressurized current swirled all around the vault, yet there was no roar of rushing waves- only a terrifying, absolute silence.
Cassius’s eyelids snapped shut, his body going completely limp as he began to sink weightlessly through the aquatic abyss, his arms drifting out at his sides like a fallen bird.
The majestic chamber was still entirely recognizable through the murky, blue-black depths, but the rules of gravity had been utterly rewritten. The fallen marble debris from the pillars, the heavy golden curtain rings, and the fine satin sheets from the bed were all floating effortlessly in the suspension, drifting past one another in a slow, eerie ballet.
The shattered glass shards from the windows hung in the water like a constellation of frozen stars.
Yet, as Cassius drifted deeper into the cold dark, his closed eyes blind to the floating wreckage of the room, one thing became terrifyingly clear.
There was no trace of Vilucious. There was no trace of Florianthum. The grand bed was empty, the space beside the pillars was vacant, and the two of them had vanished completely from the submerged chamber, leaving Cassius entirely alone to sink into the weightless, suffocating void.
What the hell is this? The thought cut through the fog in his mind, sharp and frantic. An illusion? A domain? No... my shadows aren’t responding. The ink is dead.
Around him, the debris of the room collided in slow motion. The heavy golden curtain rings drifted past his face, clinking together with a dull, muffled tink... clink that sounded miles away.He tried to force his eyelids open, but the pressure of the water felt like lead weights pressed against his skull.
He was completely weightless, his limbs drifting uselessly as he sank deeper into the cold, blue-black void.
He didn’t even move, Cassius thought, a cold spike of genuine panic piercing through his usual arrogance.
He just looked at me. Those white eyes... that wasn’t royal magic. That was something unreal. I’m drowning in a room with no water. Break it. Come on, snap out of it!
