The Sky Was Never Young: Vampire System Apocalypse

Chapter 49: Restraints Stripped Away: The Blood of a Son

  • Next Chapter

The world around Cassius lost its color, bleaching into a stark, blinding white of unadulterated reality. They were licking the ground. His father’s face was pressed flush against the jagged edge of a paving stone, desperately trying to slurp up a microscopic smear of purple fluid.

His mother was pushing her husband away, growling like a rabid stray over a scrap of meat, her fingernails splintering further as she dug at the stone lines.

They are licking the dirt, his mind repeated, a loop of madness. My parents are eating the dirt.

The sheer, sickening humiliation of the sight; the absolute cruelty of the trap designed by the monster who owned the carriage drove Cassius past the point of sanity. If they wanted his blood, if this world required his destruction to feed their cursed hunger, he would give it to them. But not like this. Not from the filthy, unwashed stones of Vilucious’s courtyard.

With a sudden, violent burst of movement that caught the perimeter entirely off guard, Cassius lunged forward. He didn’t run away. He charged directly into the line of weapons.

The front-line soldier didn’t even have time to squeeze his trigger before Cassius’s hands slammed down onto the heavy, reinforced frame of the tactical crossbow. The guard gasped, trying to pull the weapon back, but Cassius’s grip was like iron. He didn’t want the weapon. He wanted the edge. Fitted to the underside of the heavy military crossbow was a long, crescent-shaped bayonet blade, forged from black iron and sharpened to a razor’s edge to deter charging infantry.

Cassius didn’t hesitate.

With a guttural, desperate strength, he grabbed his own dripping left arm with his right hand, positioning his forearm directly against the serrated base of the blade.

Then, with a savage, agonizing yank, he pulled his arm across the metal.

The blade bit deep. It didn’t just cut; the sheer force of his desperate pull sheared through muscle, severed tendons, and cracked against the bone before slicing completely through the remaining flesh. The arm came away entirely.

"AaGHhh---"

The scream that ripped from Cassius’s throat was not human. It was a prolonged, shattering roar of absolute agony and shattered sanity that echoed off the high stone walls of the plaza, vibrating through the armor of every man present. The sound carried the weight of a dying god, a raw, bleeding noise that seemed to tear the very air apart.

Near the carriage, the dark, amused smile on Lord Vilucious’s face instantly vanished. His eyes, usually half-lidded and brimming with bored malice, widened in a minute shock. His fists tightened, which he had been resting in midair. For a fraction of a second, the king’s perfect composure cracked, a rare, genuine tremor of astonishment passing through his features as he stared at the boy who had just mutilated himself rather than submit to the theater of the court.

On the platform, the horror was too much to bear. Florianthum’s breath hitched violently. The sight of the severed limb and the fountain of vibrant, thick purple blood spraying across the pale stones broke her martial resolve. Inside her heavy silver armet, she slammed her eyes shut, her vision dark as pure fear and shock consumed her. She couldn’t look. The sound of that scream was already burning itself into her memory, an indelible stain on her soul.

A few paces behind Cassius, Fukuro collapsed. The secondary advisor, usually so precise and detached, bent himself completely to the ground. His knees hit the stone with a dull thud as he tucked his head toward his chest, his hands trembling violently as he pressed them hard against his ears, trying in vain to block out the agonizing resonance of Cassius’s scream.

"Wha... what- wa- that..."

His breath came in ragged, terrified gasps, his entire frame shaking as the sheer gravity of the tragedy unfolded inches away.

Out in the dirt, Cassius was falling, but his resolve refused to let his knees touch the ground just yet. The white-hot agony of the missing limb felt like a furnace roaring in his shoulder, the nerve endings screaming as a thick, heavy torrent of violet blood poured from the stump. His vision blurred, edges fraying into darkness, but his right hand remained steady.

He reached down into the dust. His fingers closed around his own severed left arm.

With a sickening, wet heft, he picked it up. He didn’t drop it. He didn’t scream again. Instead, his chest heaving, he staggered back toward the two figures who were still frantically trying to lick the stains from the flagstones.

"NEVER... BECAU... SE- O-OF... A RUTHLESS- IDIOTIC BASTAR---"

The words were wrenched from his throat, stammering and broken by the sheer, unadulterated pain tearing through his torso. Heavy, hot tears were still falling from Cassius’s eyes, mixing with the purple spray on his cheeks as he spoke, his voice cracking into a jagged, tear-soaked declaration of defiance.

He fell to one knee right in front of them, his body swaying dangerously from the rapid blood loss. With a trembling, blood-soaked right hand, he extended his own severed arm, offering it directly to his parents like a macabre peace offering.

He held the open, bleeding end of the limb directly over their faces, letting the thick, warm violet fluid pour into their open, waiting jaws.

"Eat..." Cassius whispered, his voice dropping into a broken, breathless sob as his parents instantly abandoned the cold stone, their jaws snapping hungrily at the offered flesh, consuming the blood directly from the arm instead of the ground.

"Not from his floo...f-floor never... from his flo..."

The suffocating silence that followed Cassius’s broken whisper didn’t last. It warped, thickening into something heavy and freezing as Lord Vilucious’s deadly aura expanded outward from the carriage.

The pressure of it was suffocating. For the first time in memory, that terrible, crushing presence wasn’t under the king’s absolute control. It rolled off him in jagged, erratic waves, fueled by a quiet, venomous rage that turned the air in the plaza brittle. To hear such treasonous defiance pour from the mouth of a Slavic tribune: a boy Vilucious had deemed nothing more than a piece of disposable trash to be broken for his morning amusement- had shattered the monarch’s pristine composure.

Vilucious didn’t shout. He didn’t order the ballistas to fire. Instead, the sudden, violent shift in his temper manifested in a chilling, deliberate focus.

With a sharp swirl of his heavy silk robes, the king turned abruptly on the raised platform. He didn’t look at the bleeding boy or the feral parents below anymore. His focus locked onto Florianthum. Before she could recoil, Vilucious reached out, his long, velvet-gloved fingers catching her wrists with an iron grip that rattled the heavy plates of her gauntlets. He didn’t just hold her; he wrenched her upper body around, forcing her to turn and face directly at him, bridging the inches between them with a cold, terrifying proximity.

Florianthum’s breath caught, but she froze under his touch.

Without breaking eye contact, Vilucious reached up with one hand and caught the edge of her silver armet. With a rough, unceremonious yank, he pulled the heavy battle helmet from her head.

The moment the metal casing cleared her brow, her ethereal features were fully exposed to the harsh light of the courtyard. Free from the tight confines of the armor, her long, winter-snowy hair fell open, cascading down her shoulders and back like a sudden flurry of frost against her dark mantle.

The king didn’t even have to look away to know what would happen next. Instantly, a high-ranking royal soldier stepped forward from the shadows of the carriage. The man moved with a fluid, terrifying precision, holding out a polished, velvet-lined presentation tray. Without a single spoken command from Vilucious, the soldier deftly took the heavy silver armet from the king’s hand. He knew his duty. He turned on his heel, carrying the helmet away to deposit it securely into the dark recesses of the royal carriage, preparing for whatever punishment or strip of title was to follow.

Vilucious ignored the departure entirely. His focus remained anchored to the woman in front of him. Slowly, deliberately, he raised both of his hands, pressing his palms against Florianthum’s cheeks. His skin felt like marble against hers; unbearably cold, yet carrying the coiled strength of a predator.

Beneath his palms, her striking, hazel eyes shone with a sharp, glassy brilliance. The horror of Cassius’s sacrifice was still screaming in the back of her mind, but as a seasoned warrior, she controlled all her emotions like an absolute pro. Not a single muscle in her jaw twitched. Her gaze remained level, unblinking, and entirely unreadable, hiding the fire consuming her chest behind a mask of flawless, disciplined stillness.

"Ahahaha... Aha... AHAHAHAHAHA!"

On the other side, it started as a wet, ragged cough, but it rapidly spiraled into a maniacal, hysterical laugh. Cassius was unraveling, his shoulders shaking violently as the horrific absurdity of his suffering broke whatever sanity he had left. The laugh was raw, choked with the thick purple blood bubbling at his lips, a terrifying sound born of absolute pain and absolute confidence.

He was crying at the same time. Heavy, hot tears cut clean tracks through the dust and ash caked onto his face, spilling over his cheeks even as his wide, bloodshot eyes locked onto the raised platform above. He had nothing left to lose. He had torn his own flesh apart to deny the king his twisted theater, and that realization filled him with a wild, untouchable arrogance.

"You expected me to attack..."

"Heh... hehehe..."

Cassius mocked, his voice a shattered, breathless rasp that still managed to carry across the stones like a curse.

He spat a mouthful of violet fluid onto the ground, his body swaying precariously from blood loss, yet he didn’t fall. He forced his remaining hand to tighten its grip on his severed limb, offering a final, agonizing sneer beside the royal carriage.

"You expected me to swing at your guards... to beg for their lives like a dog, AHAHAAHAA..." He howled, the maniacal laughter breaking through his words as he stared straight at the crown.

"Heh... aha... AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

"You thought you could make them eat from your floor, you bloated, pale-faced bastard! You expected an army... but you didn’t expect a son!"

The sheer weight of his mockery hung dead in the air, a blunt, bleeding insult aimed squarely at the king’s fragile composure.

A few paces away from the king’s freezing presence, Fukuro was entirely broken. He was crawling on his knees through the darkening shadows of the platform, his fingers clawing weakly at the floor as he dragged his weight forward. The sheer, suffocating pressure of Vilucious’s aura and the echo of the boy’s maniacal laughter had stripped away any semblance of his composure.

His entire body trembled violently, his breath coming in shallow, terrified gasps as he tried to sink deeper into the gloom, desperate to escape the inevitable fallout of the tribune’s defiance.

Then, the oppressive stillness cracked.

Vilucious’s cold hands slid from her cheeks as Florianthum moved. There was no hesitation, no glance back at the monarch who had just stripped away her armor. She walked forward like a machine, her steps perfectly calculated, rhythmic, and slow against the pale marble. Her face was an unreadable mask of absolute stone, her winter snowy hair catching the pale light as she descended the platform steps and stepped out onto the blood-slicked grit of the plaza, advancing directly toward Cassius.

Down in the dirt, Cassius’s world was narrowing to a dark, fraying tunnel. The rapid, heavy loss of the thick purple fluid was robbing his limbs of their warmth, blurring his vision into a haze of gray and crimson shadows. Through the fog, he could just barely make out the silver gleam of her armor moving toward him, a pale phantom cutting through the dust while his right hand remained steady, continuing to feed his own flesh to his sacred lineage.

He looked up at her approaching figure, his chest heaving as he forced air into his failing lungs. The maniacal laughter had burned out, leaving only a raw, jagged conviction.

"Go... go ahead..." Cassius stammered, the words catching violently in his throat as a thick drop of violet blood spilled from his lip. He leaned heavily on his knees, his voice small, fractured, yet cuttingly clear in the quiet.

"Laugh... laugh at my tears..."

He stopped, taking a ragged, wheezing breath, his remaining hand trembling as his parents’ teeth scraped against the severed bone of his offered arm. He forced his eyes to lock onto hers.

"But you... you forgot... one thing," he whispered, each syllable a brutal effort against the encroaching darkness. He swallowed hard, coughing up a small spray of purple before continuing.

"Once you’ve... once you’ve lost everything... you have... absolutely nothing left... to fear."

A grim, bloody smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, defiant even as his head drooped from the sheer exhaustion of the pain. He squeezed his eyes shut for a second to clear the black spots, then forced his chin up one last time to look past her, toward the royal carriage.

"You haven’t... defeated me," he gasped out, his voice cracking under the weight of the agony, yet ringing with an untouchable, terrifying certainty. "You’ve just... you’ve just stripped away... my restraints."
