Chapter 32: The Sovereign Mirror: Magical Golden Wings

The silence that followed the revelation of Cassius Victus was thick, suffocating, and absolute. For a heartbeat, the crackle of the blue-fire flamebeaux was the only sound echoing across the cavernous vault of the throne room. The vampire elite stood frozen, suspended in a state of collective shock. Every pair of crimson eyes in the court was locked onto the upper gallery, transfixed by the towering figure who had just disrupted the entire hierarchy of the kingdom with a single, calculated step forward.

But it was not just Cassius’s imposing stature or his heavy, gold-glided royal attire that held the vanguard at bay. It was the creature cradled securely against his chest.

Vermonia.

The legendary entity- presenting itself as a shivering, pristine white cat- breathed softly against Cassius’s arm. To the untrained eye, it was a fragile pet; to the kingdom’s battalion, it was an ancient, catastrophic force of nature. More importantly, it was entirely untouchable.

A single stray bolt from a nervous soldier could nick the creature, triggering an arcane backlash that would turn the marble foundations of the castle into dust. The guards, seasoned killers who had faced down baseline rebellions without blinking, found their fingers locking rigid over the triggers of their heavy steel crossbows. Their knuckles turned a bruised white, paralyzed by a terror that had nothing to do with cowardice and everything to do with survival.

Down on the main floor, the heavy stillness was broken by a soft, rustling sound. Lord Vilucious shifted his weight. The initial shock that had tightened his features vanished, melting away into an expression of profound, calculated malice. He looked up at Cassius, his gaze tracking the intricate silver insignias forged from the dark metals that anchored the intruder to the stone gallery.

Vilucious did not flinch. Instead, a slow, ruthless smile spread across his face- a cold, sharp curving of the lips that didn’t reach his dead eyes. When he spoke, his voice was a smooth, mocking baritone that cut through the silence like a scalpel, designed to strip Cassius of his grand entrance and drag him down to the dirt.

"A clown?" Vilucious murmured, his tone dripping with theatrical amusement.

"How delightfully unexpected. I suppose every grand kingdom requires a court jester to keep the court entertained before the executioner arrives."

The insult hung in the chilled air, sharp and deliberately provocative. The elite vampires lining the walls shifted, a low, collective murmur of dark satisfaction rippling through their ranks. They expected fury. They expected Cassius to lash out, to defend his stolen nobility.

Instead, Cassius laughed.

It was not a desperate laugh, nor was it the hysterical chuckle of a concerned man. It was a rich, booming sound of genuine amusement that bounced off the high, vaulted ceilings and nearly drowned out the crackle of the torches. The sheer audacity of the sound sent a visible tremor through the front line of guards.

Keeping his grip loose but protective around Vermonia’s shivering form, Cassius stepped out of the shadow of the upper gallery. He began his descent. He walked down the winding stone staircase with a slow, rhythmic cadence, his heavy leather boots thudding against the stone with the unbothered grace of a king inspecting his own gardens.

As he reached the bottom of the stairs, the vanguard panicked. Crossbows remained raised, their iron sights aligned directly with Cassius’s chest, but as his shadow fell over the front-line soldiers, the men instinctively faltered. They shuffled backward in a clumsy, synchronized retreat, their boots scraping frantically against the polished marble. Their eyes darted wildly between Cassiu’s mocking smile and the pristine white fur of the entity in his arms. Nobody wanted to be the one whose trembling hand released a bolt. They moved like water parting before an oncoming ship, clearing a wide, unobstructed path through the center of the hall.

Cassius didn’t even glance at the weapons tracking his skull. His focus remained entirely on the man waiting for him at the end of the room.

Stretching from the grand arched entrance all the way to the foot of the throne stairs was an immense, royal blue carpet. It was a thick, heavily woven tapestry of statehood, designed to force visitors to walk a precise line of submission before the crown. Cassius stepped onto it, his heavy boots sinking into the plush fabric as he strolled down the exact center.

He stopped a few paces away, standing far enough to command the space but close enough to look directly into Vilucious’s eyes. The contrast between them was stark- Vilucious wrapped in his rigid, cold authority, and Cassius radiating a terrifying, unyielding power that seemed to wrap the very light around his frame.

Cassius tilted his head, his smile broadening as he let the heavy silence stretch for a heartbeat longer.

"Ahh..." Cassius said, his voice dropping into a smooth, melodic purr that carried flawlessly across the quiet room. "But tell me, my lord... why on earth would this kingdom ever need to hire a jester, when it already has a clown sitting upon its throne?"

The court went entirely breathless. The insult didn’t just target Vilucious; it struck directly at the legitimacy of the rule itself. The air in the room instantly grew ten degrees colder, the heavy scent of ozone and ancient blood magic flaring as the two men locked eyes over the blue carpet.

The insult lingered in the stagnant air of the court, a physical weight that seemed to press down on the shoulders of every vampire present. For a second, the only movement was the flickering of the blue flames against the damp stone walls. The silence was so fragile that the sudden, violent scraping of leather against granite sounded like a thunderclap.

"Vermonia!"

The shout did not come from dramatic Vilucious. It tore from the top of the throne stairs, a guttural roar wrapped in extreme, unchecked rage. The King had risen. His face was a mask of twisted nobility, his veins bulging black against his pale throat as his voice rattled the heavy glass windows of the high gallery.

At the sound of her true name, the entity in Cassius’s arms stirred. The deceptive lethargy that had held the white cat in a trance vanished in an instant. Her eyes snapped open. The deep, swirling pool of dark purple aura that had blanketed her fur- the heavy, suffocating energy that had terrified the vanguard- evaporated like mist under a harsh sun. Beneath it, her natural, piercing dark blue eyes returned, sharp and terrifyingly lucid.

Before Cassus could tighten his grip or utter a counter-spell, Vermonia lashed out.

With a flash of unsheathed claws, she delivered a swift, deliberate scratch across the flesh of Cassius’s wrist. Blood, thick and unnaturally dark, welled instantly from the wound, staining the gold embroidery of his sleeve. Cassius didn’t yell, but a sharp intake of breath hissed through his teeth as his arms instinctively loosened.

With a blend of feral grace and frantic urgency, Vermonia slipped from his grasp. She dropped to the plush royal blue carpet without making a sound, her small body hitting the fabric like a ghost. The moment her paws touched the floor, she sprinted. She became a blur of pristine white fur cutting across the center of the hall, leaving the bleeding Cassius behind.

The guards watched in absolute shock, their crossbows wavering as the living shield they feared completely abandoned the intruder.

Vermonia did not run to the ruthless, furious King. Instead, she bounded directly toward Lord Vilucious, her precious. As she reached the base of his heavy, metallic-rimmed leather boots, her frantic momentum ceased. She slowed, rolling herself entirely onto her back in a display of sudden, unsettling submission, her spine arching against the cold marble floor right at his feet.

"Meowww."

The cry was soft, high-pitched, and entirely domestic, yet it echoed with an ancient resonance that made the stones vibrate.

Instantly, the atmosphere shifted. Across the floor of the court, the scattered, shattered fragments of the golden wings- the divine artifacts that had been brutally broken during her earlier rampage- began to tremble. The heavy shards of gold hummed with a low, melodic vibration. Then, as if caught in an invisible, localized vortex, the pieces lifted into the midair.

They floated in suspension, glowing with a soft ethereal luminescence that defied the aggressive blue fire of the torches. With the seamless perfection of a reversing mirror, the jagged shards flew toward the throne stairs. They clicked together in midair, the fractures healing with a bright flash of arcane magic until not a single blemish remained. With a final, sharp ring of metal, the restored golden wings tugged themselves firmly back into place, anchoring securely to the sides of the King’s boots exactly as they had been before the chaos began.

As soon as Lord Vilucious opened his mouth to scream a frantic command to his guards, Cassius realized the dice had rolled over for the King’s side.

Cassius chuckled softly under his breath; his grand trap was perfectly executed till now, but he knew that it had shifted now.
