Chapter 26: A Furious Deception: In the Shadows of the Realm

The air in the vaulted gallery remained dead and freezing, heavy with the suffocating weight of Lord Vilucious’s presence, even in his absence. The quiet click of the leather restraint falling away felt like a spark in a powder keg.

Cassius parted his dry lips, his jaw tight as he prepared to speak. The first breath of unfiltered air caught in his throat, a low, gravelly rasp forming behind his teeth.

Before a single syllable could escape, Florianthum’s hand flew upward. Her index finger pressed firmly against his lips, the touch sudden and unyielding. The warmth of her skin contrasted sharply with the frigid iron of his shackles, but her eyes conveyed an immediate, razor-sharp warning. The triumph that had illuminated her features just a second ago was instantly replaced by a rigid, hyper-vigilant intensity. Her gaze held his, demanding absolute silence.

She stepped back, her midnight-blue silk gown rustling softly against the polished obsidian floor. She didn’t look at the shadows. She didn’t glance at high, arched ceilings where the bioluminescent moss cast long, twisting shapes. Instead, she moved with an eerie, calculated grace toward a small pedestal nearby.

Resting atop the black stone pedestal was one of Vilucious’s minor personal trophies- a jagged, slender dagger forged from abyssal steel, its edge unnaturally sharp and designed to cause prolonged agony. The metal gleamed with a faint, oily sheen under the pale light.

Without hesitation, Florianthum gripped the blade. She drew the sharp edge firmly across her palm.

Cassius’s human eyes widened, a sudden tension seizing his massive frame as he watched her.

From the deep laceration, her blood began to well up. It was neither human red nor was it the dark fluid of the kingdom’s corrupted denizens. It was a brilliant, glowing light-blue, shimmering with a faint internal magic, the same that he had drunk earlier. Instead of letting it drip uselessly onto the cold floor, Florianthum held her out in the space between them.

Manipulating the inherent arcane properties of her unique essence, she focused. The light-blue blood suspended itself in the air, stretching and twisting like glowing threads. With a series of precise, delicate jerks of her wrist, she shaped the fluid into glowing, floating letters.

The hovering words spelled out a chilling message: "He can listen to us!"

Cassius read the words, the glowing blue light reflecting in his dark grey eyes. His brow furrowed deeply. Maintaining the absolute silence she had enforced, he slowly tilted his head to the left, then to the right. He scanned the vast, empty expanses of the vaulted hall. The columns were bare. The corners were cast in total darkness, devoid of guards or magical sentinels. There was no one there. The atmosphere was completely vacant.

Confused, Cassius looked back at her and gave a subtle, slow shake of his head, as if to say, There is no one here. How?

Florianthum did not blink. She offered a single, firm nod of her head- a gesture carrying absolute certainty. With a subtle flick of her uninjured hand, she severed her focus. The floating blue letters dissolved, the droplets falling to the obsidian floor and burning away into harmless vapor, erasing any evidence of their silent communication.

She took another step backward, creating a small distance between them. Her expression grew intensely somber, the weight of a horrific secret pressing down on her shoulders. Slowly, deliberately, her fingers reached for the top buttons of her tailored gown.

Cassius watched her hand move, a sudden flash of societal instinct and deep-seated respect overriding his confusion. Recognizing the gesture, he immediately turned his head to the side, averting his gaze toward the dark, empty walls to grant her privacy.

Florianthum didn’t stop. One by one, the silver buttons clicked open. She parted the heavy midnight-blue silk from the top, pulling the fabric away to reveal the simple, functional innerwear beneath. But it wasn’t the vulnerability of her garments that she wanted him to see.

It was the horror etched into her flesh.

Spanning from the top of her stomach, tearing straight through the center of her chest, and ending just below her collarbone was a massive, catastrophic wound. It was a jagged, violent tear, barely held together by a network of glowing, unnatural sutures that hummed with a volatile, dark energy. The skin around the edges was bruised a deep, necrotic purple, weeping specks of light-blue light. It was a miracle- or a curse- that she was even standing. The sheer scale of the injury spoke of a lethal, devastating blow, a mortal wound that should have claimed her life on the spot.

Florianthum raised her hand, her movements soft and completely devoid of malice. She gently placed her bare, smooth palm against Cassius’s rough, stubbled cheek. The tenderness of the gesture was heartbreaking. With a light, persuasive pressure, she guided his head back around, forcing him to look.

Cassius’s dark grey eyes moved from her face down to her exposed chest.

When his gaze locked onto the colossal, agonizing ruin of her flesh, his entire body went rigid. The stoic, unbreakable facade of the legendary rebel leader shattered in an instant. His chest heaved with a sharp, silent intake of air. The horror of what she had endured for their cause- the sheer magnitude of the sacrifice hidden beneath the King’s fine silks- struck him with physical force.

The coldness in his human eyes dissolved. They became glossy and intensely watery. A single, heavy tear welled up in the corner of his eye, tracking slowly down his cheek and washing a clean line through the faint dust on his skin, before dripping onto his collarbone. He looked up at her, his eyes screaming a million questions, filled with raw, unadulterated anguish.

Florianthum kept her palm against his face for just a second longer, offering him a silent anchor of comfort, before drawing her hand back.

She needed him to understand the nature of this curse.

Raising her hands into the narrow space between them, she made a swift, clean gesture- mimicking a heavy sword slicing through the air with brutal finality. A fatal strike.

Immediately after, she brought both of her palms together, interlocking her fingers tightly, squeezing them into a suffocating, unbreakable bind. Capture.

Cassius stared at her hands, his brilliant mind racing through the fragments of his memories, searching for the meaning behind the cryptic symbols. A fatal blow... a captured bond...

He knew Florianthum was asking him for help, as in the massive hall she drew the symbol of help with his dark purple fluid even before she started the fight, so it was easy for him to guess such things. Suddenly, an old, forgotten memory sparked in the depths of his mind. He had seen the slaves and the high-rankers using this as a slang threat. ’FORGIVE AND TAKE MY SOUL, LORD VILUCIOUS!’The vampire from the garage urged this when Cassian was fighting him!

It was clear to him that the King possessed a terrifying ability, a dark ritual reserved only for those he deemed either too valuable to lose or too punishable to forgive.

The Soul-Binding Anchor.

Cassius understood completely. Her body was fatally injured by the ruthless rituals, as the sword gesture meant a fatal hit. The locked palms meant Vilucious had caught her departing soul before it could cross the veil, but what the complete truth was- did he bind it to her back, or was it captured with him forever- was still a hidden piece of the puzzle. She was alive, but her very soul was now a prisoner, anchored to the King’s will. Also, maybe that’s why he could hear her, because her life force was literally plugged into the kingdom’s dark network.

The calm smirk they had shared moments ago was a dangerous illusion. They hadn’t won. They were trapped in a much deeper, far more terrifying web.

Florianthum watched the realization dawn on his face. Seeing that he finally understood the true stakes of their game, she gave a slow, solemn nod. Carefully, she pulled the midnight silk back over her chest, her fingers working with quiet efficiency to refasten the silver buttons, burying the horrific truth once more beneath the guise of the King’s favored price.

The distant echo of the corridor served as a brutal reminder of the unseen eyes and listening walls. Cassius, carrying the tactical mind of a legendary military genius, calculated their odds in a fraction of a second. He knew the rules of the King’s twisted surveillance. To protect the secret of her soul-binding, they needed to feed Vilucious exactly what a dark tyrant wanted to hear: broken compliance mixed with futile, agonizing defiance.

Breathing through the dry ache in his throat, Cassius finally shattered the fragile silence. His chest heaved against the heavy runic iron shackles as he projected his voice into the vaulted emptiness.

"What more can that bastard Vilucious and you... his puppet do to me?" his words tore through the gallery, heavy with a carefully manufactured, agonizing fury. The raw emotion in his delivery masked the cold precision of his intellect. He leaned into his chains, straining forward as if trying to tear through the containment field. "Take my soul forever?? Go ahead! I already have nothing to lose, like you all, Vampirian Idiots who call him a lord!"

Florianthum’s analytical mind registered his performance instantly. She understood his assignment. He had fully grasped the horrifying nature of her soul-anchor, and he was executing the perfect cover story for whoever- or whatever- was eavesdropping on them.

Stepping into her role with flawless, theatrical precision, Florianthum drew herself up to her full height. The soft midnight-blue silk of her gown rippled violently as she channeled a dramatic, high-pitched rage that echoed off the obsidian pillars.

"Torture... I will never let you die," she shouted back, her voice dripping with an icy, theatrical malice that would satisfy any spying ear. "That’s what I have for you!"

But how Cassius was so sure about her story? What was the reason he understood her so easily?

The answer is because he knew her... she was his own classmate. The silent classmate from past, EZAILY-
