The Shadow King's Alpha : The Cursed Bond
Chapter 33: The Bond has Begun to Awaken
[The Imperial Throne Hall—Continuation]
Silence.
The crystal chalice remained suspended in Kael’s hand; every noble stared toward the entrance. The Lord of Darkness walked through the great doors as though he had all the time in the world.
His long black robes drifted silently across the marble floor; not a single footstep could be heard. The air itself seemed to part before him.
No one spoke, no one dared. Lytharion stopped beside Kael; his ancient golden eyes lingered upon the crystal chalice.
Then a faint smile curved upon his lips.
"My Queen..." His voice was gentle, almost affectionate. "...I have no desire to become a widower so soon."
The entire Throne Hall froze. Kael blinked. "...What?"
Before anyone could react. Lytharion calmly lifted one hand, his elegant fingers wrapped around the crystal stem. Without the slightest hesitation...he removed the chalice from Kael’s grasp.
His movements were so effortless it was as though he had merely taken away an ordinary cup of tea. He raised the crystal toward the light; the crimson liquid shimmered beautifully, almost hypnotically.
Then...he brought it beneath his nose, took a slow breath, another, and then his smile never disappeared.
"...Mm." He lowered the chalice. "Interesting."
Grand Duke Lior immediately stepped forward; his usually composed face had become unusually tense.
"Shadow King." His voice echoed across the silent hall. "What do you mean?"
Lytharion continued studying the wine and then glanced towards Kael.
"Your son has yet to sit upon the imperial throne, yet..." His golden eyes slowly swept across every noble gathered inside the hall. "Death...has already attempted to greet him."
A heavy silence descended.
Lytharion tilted the crystal slightly, watching the crimson wine ripple as his smile remained impossibly calm. "How impatient...isn’t it?"
His words echoed through the Throne Hall like a divine judgment. One by one...the faces of the assembled nobles paled. Several ministers instinctively stepped backward. A Duchess covered her mouth in horror. Even the proud Dukes of the Seven Great Houses exchanged uneasy glances.
Someone...had attempted to poison the future emperor. Inside the Imperial Palace, during the coronation. High Priest Azrakan’s eyes widened; his sacred staff struck the marble floor with a deafening crack.
CLANG!!
"WHO..." His voice thundered throughout the chamber. "...WHO DARES COMMIT SUCH SACRILEGE?"
The silver flames within the sacred lanterns suddenly surged; the twelve Spirit Priests immediately formed a protective circle around the throne.
Azrakan’s gaze swept across the hall. "Who among you...has dared poison the vessel chosen by the Sacred Spirits?"
Silence.
Not a single person answered, not even a whisper. The only sound came from the distant crackling of sacred flames. Kael looked at the crystal chalice in stunned disbelief.
"Poison..." He whispered. "Someone truly intended...to kill me."
Lytharion slowly turned toward him, and for the first time since entering the hall...the teasing smile faded. His expression softened only slightly; he lifted one hand as his thumb brushed gently across Kael’s cheek.
A reassuring gesture so brief many wondered if they had imagined it.
"My Queen." His deep voice remained perfectly calm. "Today...belongs to your people. Do not allow a coward hiding in the shadows...to steal this moment from them."
He placed the poisoned chalice into the hands of a nearby spirit priest.
"Destroy it."
The priest immediately lowered his head. "As you command, Lord of Darkness."
Lytharion turned toward High Priest Azrakan; his tone was no louder than before. Yet...it carried the weight of absolute authority. "The ceremony shall continue. There is no ancient law...that declares an emperor must drink wine...to wear his crown."
The high priest stood motionless. Then slowly he bowed. Not merely in respect but in acknowledgment.
"The Lord of Darkness speaks truly." He raised the Staff of the First Spirit high above his head. "The Rite of Wine...is hereby omitted. The coronation...shall proceed."
The Spirit Priests struck their staffs against the marble floor in unison.
CLANG!
CLANG!
CLANG!
The sacred choir resumed its hymn; the silver flames steadied. One by one...the nobles returned to their places. Yet the atmosphere had changed forever; no one smiled now because every soul inside the Throne Hall understood one terrifying truth.
Before the Emperor had even worn his crown...someone had already tried to murder him. And somewhere hidden among the bowed heads the would-be assassin was still watching.
High Priest Azrakan slowly stepped toward the marble altar. His weathered hands reached for the Imperial Crown.
For a brief moment he simply stared at it. This crown had witnessed the rise and fall of emperors. It had survived wars.
Rebellions, entire dynasties. Now...it would choose another. He carefully lifted it with both hands.
The countless diamonds caught the sunlight pouring through the stained-glass dome, scattering thousands of shimmering lights across the Throne Hall. The crimson ruby at its center glowed like the beating heart of the empire itself.
The high priest turned. His ancient eyes met Kael’s.
"Your Imperial Majesty." His voice carried throughout the palace. "The Sacred Spirits have acknowledged your soul. The Imperial Council has acknowledged your authority. The Great Houses have acknowledged your succession."
He paused.
"And before all who stand as witness today...I now ask you one final question."
The entire Throne Hall held its breath. "Lord Kael Vaelric...do you swear to rule this empire not for glory nor for wealth nor for power...but for the lives entrusted to your crown?"
Silence.
Kael looked beyond the throne, and he slowly lowered himself onto one knee before the imperial throne. His right fist rested over his heart, his head bowed.
"I swear." His voice was calm, yet every word carried unwavering conviction. "I swear to protect this empire even should my own life become the price. I swear to place my people before myself. I swear that so long as I draw breath...Qashmar shall never stand alone."
Silence followed.
Then High Priest Azrakan smiled. "Then rise, Emperor."
Kael slowly stood; the high priest stepped closer, holding the imperial crown with both hands... He slowly raised it above Kael’s head. Time itself seemed to slow, the sacred choir fell silent, and the bells outside stopped ringing.
Even the wind ceased to move. Every eye in the Throne Hall followed the ancient crown higher...higher.... Until it descended.
The gold circlet settled gently upon Kael’s hair. The crimson ruby resting at its center caught the light. For one heartbeat...nothing happened.
Then—
BOOOOOOM!!
A blinding pillar of silver light erupted from the Imperial Crown. The entire Throne Hall shook violently; the stained-glass dome above burst into dazzling brilliance.
Outside, the clouds parted as a single beam of sunlight descended directly upon the Imperial Palace. The imperial banners roared in the wind; every bell throughout Qashmar began ringing at once.
From the palace to the capital to the farthest mountain villages, the sound echoed across the entire empire.
The Spirits had accepted their Emperor. The ruby at the center of the crown pulsed once.
Then its crimson light merged with the faint Lunar Covenant mark hidden beneath Kael’s robes. For only an instant the mark shimmered.
High above the palace the heavens answered. A massive red wolf formed entirely from radiant light appeared among the clouds. Its majestic howl rolled across the empire.
Citizens flooded into the streets. Children pointed toward the sky in awe. Back inside the Throne Hall...every noble, every knight, every priest, and every servant dropped to one knee.
Even the proud Dukes of the Seven Great Houses lowered their heads until they nearly touched the marble floor. The master of ceremonies struck his staff against the ground.
CLANG!
His voice thundered through the palace.
"BEHOLD!"
Another strike.
CLANG!
"HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY..."
One final strike.
CLANG!
"KAEL VAELRIC...THE EMPEROR OF QASHMAR!"
The hall exploded.
"LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR!"
"GLORY TO THE RED WOLF!"
"MAY HIS MAJESTY REIGN FOR A THOUSAND YEARS!"
Their united voices shook the palace itself. Amidst the deafening cheers...only one person remained standing.
The Lord of Darkness.
Lytharion.
His ancient golden eyes never left the man wearing the crown. A faint...almost imperceptible smile touched his lips. So quiet...that no one noticed. Except...the wolf god Vaelthor.
Lytharion’s lips curved ever so slightly. A smile so faint...that no mortal eye noticed it; his voice never rose above a whisper. Yet somehow...it reached the one person it was meant for.
"Congratulations...my queen."
Standing before the Imperial Throne... Kael’s fingers tightened ever so slightly; his heart skipped. Slowly he turned his head. Across the vast Throne Hall, past the kneeling nobles, past the Spirit Priests, and past the banners fluttering beneath the vaulted ceiling, his amber eyes found only one person.
Lytharion.
The Lord of Darkness stood quietly in the distance; his black robes stirred gently in the breeze flowing through the palace windows, and his expression had already returned to its usual calm.
As though he had never spoken at all. Yet... Kael had heard him perfectly, and their eyes met. The noise surrounding them seemed to fade away.
Everything became distant. For one impossible heartbeat it felt as though the entire Throne Hall had disappeared, leaving only the two of them.
Kael frowned ever so slightly as a strange feeling stirred deep within his chest, impossible to ignore. His hand unconsciously rose toward the place where the Lunar Covenant rested beneath his robes.
The mark felt warm, warmer than before.
"Why..." he murmured beneath his breath as his gaze never left Lytharion. "Why do I feel...more drawn toward him than yesterday?"
He didn’t understand it.
Was it because of the covenant? Because of the crown? Or...because somewhere along the way the distance between hatred and understanding had begun to disappear without either of them noticing.
Across the hall... Lytharion watched him in silence; his expression remained unreadable. Only Shamash, standing unnoticed among the gathered deities high above the mortal realm, let out the faintest sigh.
"So it begins."
The Lord of Light looked toward the heavens. "The bond is no longer merely acknowledged...it has begun to awaken."
