[Kael’s Chamber — Later That Night]

Silence settled over the chamber. Moonlight poured through the towering windows, casting pale silver across the polished floor.

Kael stood beside the window, his hands clasped behind his back, far beyond House Vaelric... The Imperial Palace stood proudly beneath the Lunar Moon.

The throne, which is empty and waiting. His amber eyes remained fixed upon it; the quiet stretched for several long moments.

Then—

Click.

The chamber door opened. Lytharion stepped inside; his long black robes still carried the chill of the night. Without sparing Kael a glance, he removed the heavy outer cloak from his shoulders and carelessly draped it over a nearby chair.

His movements were slow and elegant. As though he were already completely at home within Kael’s chamber. Kael watched him silently, then—

"I’ve made my decision."

Lytharion continued loosening the clasps around his sleeves as his voice remained calm and completely indifferent. "What decision?"

Kael drew a slow breath. "I...I shall become the King of Qashmar."

The room fell silent; even the breeze entering through the window seemed to disappear. Lytharion stopped, and he turned his head; his ancient golden eyes settled upon Kael. There was no surprise, only stillness.

"So, you have decided."

Kael met his gaze.

"Yes, I cannot continue pretending the throne means nothing. My empire needs someone capable of protecting it; my father has carried its burden long enough. The Great Houses are already tearing one another apart. If no one steps forward...there will be another civil war."

Lytharion remained silent. Kael continued, "I have no desire for the crown, but I cannot abandon the people who trusted House Vaelric. I refuse to stand aside while the empire destroys itself."

Silence.

Lytharion slowly walked toward him, each step echoing through the chamber, unhurried, measured, and dangerous. Kael instinctively straightened his posture; the deity stopped directly before him.

"So...you wish to become king."

Kael answered firmly. "I do."

For several heartbeats, Lytharion simply stared at him, then one completely devoid of amusement. "Interesting."

Kael frowned.

"What is?"

Lytharion’s smile slowly disappeared as he stepped even closer, close enough that Kael could feel the coldness radiating from him.

"You speak...as though you still belong to that empire."

Kael’s expression hardened. "I do."

"No," Lytharion interrupted as his voice became colder. "You belonged to Qashmar...until the night you stood before me, that night ended."

He raised one hand, and without warning, his fingers closed around Kael’s chin firmly with undeniable authority. He forced Kael to meet his gaze.

"You continue to disobey every word of your husband’s speech to you." Kael tried to pull away. Lytharion’s grip did not move even an inch. "You still believe...your life belongs to you."

Kael met his gaze without fear, saying, "It does. I may have bonded with you, but I haven’t yet sold my soul and dignity to a demon like you."

Lytharion’s golden eyes darkened, and his thumb brushed lightly beneath Kael’s jaw before tightening slightly. "Is that so? But I clearly remember you offered yourself."

Each sentence landed like a decree.

"The moment that covenant was acknowledged...your life ceased to belong solely to you. That is the fate of yours."

Kael’s jaw clenched. "I became your mate, not your prisoner."

Lytharion’s expression remained unreadable. Kael’s gaze still met it without fear.

"I know," Lytharion answered calmly. "But that still does not change anything, my queen."

Kael shoved his hand away.

This time...Lytharion allowed it; he took one step back.

"My duty to this empire has not changed." Kael’s voice carried quiet determination. "I will protect it. I will become its king, and I will fulfill every responsibility I have carried since childhood."

Lytharion regarded him for a long moment. "If you become king...your first duty will no longer be to your empire."

Kael frowned.

"It will be..." Lytharion stepped forward once more. "...to survive."

Silence.

The deity continued as his locked onto Kael’s. "A dead king protects no one and a dead mate...belongs to no one."

Kael refused to lower his gaze. "I am prepared to die if that’s what the empire requires."

The chamber temperature seemed to plummet for the first time...something dangerous flickered within Lytharion’s ancient eyes, and his voice dropped into something deeper, colder.

"Do not speak of death so lightly."

Kael stared back without fear. "I have lived beside it since I was born."

Before another word could leave his lips—THUD!

Lytharion’s palm slammed against the stone beside Kael’s head.

CRACK.

The wall fractured beneath the impact; dust rained down between them. Kael’s breath caught in his throat; there was nowhere to run and nowhere to look. He was trapped between the cold, unforgiving wall...and the Lord of Darkness.

Lytharion stepped closer and closer until not even the smallest sliver of air remained between them. Their chests collided with enough force to steal Kael’s breath.

"W-What are you—"

Before he could finish, Lytharion’s arm slid around his waist, dragging him impossibly closer; his grip wasn’t merely possessive. It was absolute, as though the deity had already decided Kael belonged to him from the heart, forever.

Golden eyes, ancient enough to witness the birth of kingdoms, stared straight into Kael’s soul.

"You wish to become king..." Lytharion murmured, his voice frighteningly calm. "...don’t you?"

Kael’s body stiffened. "I..."

"I shall permit it."

Silence.

Lytharion’s answer came so easily that Kael frowned. "You agree?"

"I shall allow it."

Silence.

Then the deity continued.

"...but everything has a price."

Lytharion slowly lifted a hand, his thumb brushing against Kael’s lower lip once and twice, painfully gentle, a touch colder than death itself.

"You...shall bear every consequence as my mate."

Kael jerked his head away; his heart pounded violently against his ribs. "W-What does that even mean?"

Lytharion never blinked. "Give me an heir."

The world stopped; every sound vanished. Kael stared at him, utterly frozen as his voice came out as nothing more than a broken whisper.

"...What?"

Lytharion’s voice remained calm, as though discussing an ancient law rather than a person’s future.

"The child born of our covenant, a child capable of inheriting both my divine lineage and your mortal blood. He shall belong to neither the Ashkarath nor Qashmar alone. He will become the guardian between two worlds."

His gaze darkened.

"If you bear that child...I shall sever the Lunar Covenant completely. I shall take the child and disappear forever."

His voice echoed through the room like a divine sentence.

"I will never seek you; I will never stand in your way. I will never interfere with your kingdom. I will vanish from your life...as though I had never existed."

The silence that followed was unbearable. Kael felt his legs weaken, his gaze locked at his merciless gaze. "No, you...I’m an Alpha. I can’t. You still fail to understand."

Lytharion interrupted him; there was no anger, no emotion, only terrifying certainty. His fingers curled beneath Kael’s chin, forcing him to meet those radiant golden eyes.

"I am not bound by mortal laws. When a deity wills it...any mortal can carry divine life."

Another long silence settled between them. The words wrapped around Kael’s throat like chains.

"If you accept, the bond between us...will cease to exist, forever. You will have your freedom. You will have your crown. You will have the life you desire, and I...will leave with my heir."

For the first time...Lytharion’s voice faltered, only for a heartbeat.

"And...never to return."

Kael lowered his gaze, his trembling fists slowly clenched. The kingdom, his people, and everything he wants to fight for...stood on one side. And on the other...stood the man with whom he is bound by lunar law.

Outside the window...the wind howled across the mountains. Kael closed his eyes; his chest ached so violently it felt as though someone were tearing his heart apart with bare hands.

When he finally spoke...his voice was broken and barely audible as his throat tightened. "If...if I agree...you’ll truly leave?"

Lytharion didn’t hesitate. "I swear upon my divinity. I will disappear from your life. You will never see me again."

The answer should have brought relief. Instead...it hurt. Far more than Kael ever imagined it could, a tear escaped despite him; he crushed it away with trembling fingers.

Then with every dream, every hope, and every unspoken feeling...shattering inside his chest—Kael forced the words out.

"...I..." A long, agonizing silence. "...agree."

The moment those words left his lips. Lytharion closed his eyes; for the first time since the beginning of time, the Lord of Darkness looked as though he had lost everything but did not realize what.

Those ancient golden eyes settled upon Kael; the young Alpha stood before him without lifting his head, like a tired warrior who had sacrificed yet another piece of himself. Lytharion reached forward; his fingers gently lifted Kael’s chin until their eyes met.

Gold and amber stared into one another like two flames born from different worlds. His thumb brushed lightly across Kael’s lower lip before falling away; his voice remained calm.

"From this moment onward, you may choose whatever path you desire, you may wear a crown, and you may rule an empire. I shall not interfere in your rule...whether the obstacle before you is mortal or immortal."

His gaze did not waver.

"But until the day our covenant is fulfilled...you remain bound to me. The laws of the Lunar Covenant acknowledge you as my consort. My word within that covenant...is absolute."

Kael remained silent, his expression never changed; only after several long heartbeats did he answer.

"Very well. I will honor the covenant because I gave my word." His amber eyes never left Lytharion’s. "But do not mistake duty...for devotion."

Another silence settled between them. Lytharion regarded him for a long moment, then...a faint smile, almost impossible to notice, touched his lips.

"I never expected your devotion."

He stepped back.

The distance between them returned. Outside, the silver moon continued watching through the open window; neither man noticed...that the ancient mark upon Kael’s chest had begun to glow faintly beneath his robes.

As though the Lunar Covenant itself had accepted the promise exchanged beneath its light. The chamber fell silent once more; one had sacrificed his freedom.

The other had sacrificed something he did not yet understand, and neither of them realized...that this bargain would one day change not only their own fates but the fate of gods...and empires alike.
