Chapter 247: Dream Death
Archie hid Amy behind him, not taking his eyes off the twisted, smiling face of the one who had entered the room.
-Why that face? I came all this way to save you.
The man, to be precise, the leader transformed into a human, chattered with a face that did not look the least bit hurt.
-If I were you, I would have run outside as soon as my body recovered. Instead of foolishly chasing me all the way here and spouting nonsense about saving me.
The one he had come to save was not Archie himself, but the Werewolf who would become leader, but Archie did not bother pointing that out in front of Amy.
He did not want to start a fight in front of Amy, who already mistakenly thought of him as a “good monster.”
-How could I? I am the only person who can help you.
“The only person,” really.
Archie held back a snort at his shamelessness.
Considering the smell of blood vibrating from him, the wounds that had already recovered, and more than anything, the armor he was wearing, there was no need to think deeply about how he had come all the way here in a “perfectly fine” state.
It was obvious he had made it this far with the strength gained by eating the human who had been guarding the room before passing out.
While Archie glared at him, the leader observed Amy, whom Archie had hidden behind himself, with eyes mixed with interest and disgust.
If the leader was searching for his next prey to recover his body, Archie intended to do the exact opposite of what the leader wished most.
Capturing the leader right now and throwing him before the humans would probably become the death he feared most.
But before Archie could make up his mind, the leader turned his gaze away from Amy and looked back at Archie.
-Are you sure it is fine to treat me like that? I might expose your identity in front of that human.
At the leader’s question, Archie felt Amy’s body stiffen behind him.
She seemed to have realized that the man before her was not human, but a Werewolf.
At the same time, the leader too seemed to realize that Amy knew everything.
The leader’s eyes widened in surprise.
Perhaps because he was just before death, he could no longer properly control his facial muscles.
Even if he could not properly control his face muscles, it was impossible to know what a bastard prepared to die might do.
Without lowering his guard, Archie glared at him.
-Whatever it is, it has nothing to do with you now. If you were struggling to live, you should have looked for another path instead of coming to me.
-Foolish. It seems you got excited and forgot reality, but your situation has not changed in the slightest. You are still a fugitive, and just because that human woman cooperates a little, there is no way that path will become easy.
-Did you come all the way here just to give that kind of advice?
Though he answered sharply, Archie was aware that he had only said it because he could not find anything in particular to refute with.
There was no way the leader did not know that either.
-How can you be certain that humans will not betray you? Do you think a day will never suddenly come when living with a monster feels too horrifying for her? Can you be certain the day will never come when she decides to bring you back and offer you to her god?
-Th-that day will not come.
Amy, who had been behind Archie, stepped forward a little and spoke firmly.
Though she immediately stiffened under the leader’s fierce gaze, Amy did not avoid his eyes.
-Archie is not horrible. I know not all monsters are bad. So......
-So what? If he does not eat humans, he is a good monster, so you will never betray him first for the rest of your life?
The leader asked with a sneer.
Archie felt contempt greater than the mockery hidden in that sentence.
He also knew that contempt was not directed only at Amy.
-Yes, a good monster, isn't it?
Revealing that scorn to the fullest, the leader muttered.
-Yes. Enough that if I am with Archie, even death is not frightening.
Amy answered in a tone that sounded rather defiant.
This time too, Archie felt a stifling heaviness, as if something weighty were pressing down on his chest.
The leader, who babbled just fine whenever there was no need, proved his uselessness this time by keeping silent.
In the end, the one who opened his mouth first was Archie.
-If you are done babbling everything you want to say, then get lost. If you intend to interfere......
-I said it is not interference, but help.
The leader cut Archie off.
-Sure you have not already forgotten my proposal? If you are going to be with that human, you had better think over my words again. You can protect that human more easily.
Unfortunately, Archie remembered his nonsense clearly.
The empty words that if he became leader, he could take Amy to their village, were too sweet to forget.
But at the same time, they were too bitter to believe blindly, and felt as if they would become poison if he swallowed them too hastily.
Like every hope in the world.
-If you have not made your decision yet, I will help you reach a conclusion.
The leader worked hard to chatter on.
Archie hoped his help meant he would get lost from this place at once, but the leader offered an opinion that was the exact opposite.
The leader gestured with his eyes toward Amy, who had been watching the conversation between the two with a tense face.
-How about making it seem as though that girl died in front of the other humans? Being eaten by a Werewolf seems clean.
-It seems you do not know what clean means, but once you see how cleanly that long tongue of yours can be cut out, you will understand.
Archie spoke roughly and stepped forward to teach him at once, but Amy grabbed him.
-Wait a moment. What is your specific plan?
After calming Archie, Amy turned her gaze to the leader.
He looked into Amy’s frightened eyes for a moment, then shrugged at Archie, who was glaring sharply at him from beside her.
-Are you afraid I will actually kill that human?
-Do you think I would let you do something like that?
When Archie asked savagely, the leader’s expression changed subtly.
At a glance, it seemed he was smiling, and from another angle, it looked like a face twisted in anger.
That ambiguous something melted away in the blink of an eye, and a twisted smile was carved over it again.
-Then if you watch me right next to her, will that put you at ease?
-Explain properly what you mean.
-It means what will die today is one human and one monster.
The leader spoke as if forcing out words he did not like at all.
-An escaped, hungry monster wanders nearby to get outside and eats two humans. Since two criminals who were going to die anyway are eaten by a monster, there will be no bastard who comes to save them.
-Have you forgotten that the one who ordered you dealt with is a god? Those bastards will not let you go.
-It is a life with not much left anyway. I will buy time for you to escape.
This time, it was Archie’s turn for his face to become a mess.
To be precise, he did not know what expression he should make.
-Has something gone wrong with your head? Even if you help me, I have no intention of giving you what you want.
-I am only doing what I can do. Since I can no longer force you to listen to my orders, I have chosen the method with the highest probability.
-How is helping me the best way to persuade me?
Archie, still unable to understand the leader’s answer, asked back.
-Because you are a “good monster.” Unlike me.
The leader grinned, took a step back, and gestured with his eyes toward the gap in the door that had been open by about half a span.
-Besides, it seems by now everyone is in an uproar because the monster captured under the Imperial Family member’s order has disappeared. Rather than wasting time dealing with me here, joining hands seems better.
Just as he said, the murmurs of humans could be heard outside, as if a small disturbance had arisen.
When shouting began mixing in between the whispers, Archie had no choice but to reach the conclusion that there was no longer any room to quarrel with the leader.
No, is this really the only choice?
It seemed someone asked between the sly feelings that said there was no other option.
Are you not, in truth, willing to step into the leader’s trap?
The leader’s lie that he could live with Amy if he became leader would not leave his head, and the weakness that wanted to believe it was not a lie fanned him on.
Fortunately or unfortunately, the one who pushed Archie’s back like that was Amy.
-I do not mind. If I become a dead person here, then now there will truly be no one left chasing me. My family will think I am dead too.
Amy whispered softly to Archie, who could not make a hasty decision.
-And that person...... no, he is not a person. I think we can trust what that Werewolf says.
If Archie had been a little more honest, he would probably have demanded of Amy how she could have so little eye for people, and how she could still say she trusted a monster when she had already been deceived by a Werewolf once.
But Archie could not say anything, as if there were a set script.
Was that why?
It also felt as if he heard someone’s voice trying to hold him back.
It was not a very pleasant voice to hear.
Inside his tangled heart, he felt a strange impulse that he had to find the owner of that voice and seize them by the collar, but Archie ignored it.
Instead, Archie chose to obediently follow her words.
Perhaps it was because he was afraid of knowing Amy’s true feelings in wanting to follow the leader.
Or perhaps he had been dazzled by the false hope the leader had offered.
***
Of course, Archie followed the one who appeared to be the leader without hearing my voice calling him.
Well, after being trapped with that bastard inside his memories, I had called him several times, but not once had an answer come back until now.
It was not as if I could touch anything either. All I could do was slowly follow behind him, just as I had done until now.
Since I could not get out anyway, I had no choice but to look for information I could extract from inside this place.
Peeking into someone else’s memories was inconsiderate, but I did not have a conscience to begin with.
Besides, the harvest I had gained was all quite unsatisfactory.
The only information that interested me at all was that at this time, there had been a guest who came to Renin’s castle, and that he was not someone even Renin, an Imperial Family member, could carelessly ignore.
But I could not dig into even this information as deeply as I wanted.
This place was inside Archie’s memories, and in any case, unless it had at least brushed past that bastard’s sight, nothing could be embodied.
This was a rather great difference from the situation in the orc burrow.
When I had used my power in the orc burrow, I had been swept away by water, but I had not been influenced this directly.
Of course, it was not the first time the power that originally occupied this place had changed capriciously as it pleased, but in any case, all those workings had a purpose.
To fulfill the contents of the contract made in the past.
In other words, the fact that I was trapped with Archie inside his memories was also highly likely to be something that helped fulfill the contract somehow.
No, it had to have some meaning like that.
Even without following that bastard’s memories to the end, it was obvious that an unhappy ending was waiting for both him and Amy.
I walked while fixing my gaze on the back of Amy’s head, which looked exceptionally vivid.
