Chapter 243: Archie’s Story (9)
At Archie’s answer, killing intent settled in the leader’s eyes.
-Do you even know...... what you have just done?
-I know very well. Right now, I am buying time until that bastard gets far enough away.
-What?
Now there was not even the slightest trace of laughter left on the leader’s face.
Archie felt a faint satisfaction at that and raised the corner of his mouth.
-Because while I climb over the wall, you have to chase that human. So if he gets caught too easily, I’ll be troubled.
Archie calmly faced the leader as the leader glared at him with eyes that seemed to want to tear him to death.
-You mad bastard. If he is left as he is, the Imperial Family will truly learn our location. Are you planning to kill all your comrades over one human?
-As if. Soon enough, you, the leader, will catch that human and prevent such a terrible thing from happening.
The leader would catch the human before it was too late.
Of course, that man would die.
But if Amy could be saved, Archie could sacrifice as many other human lives as necessary.
For a while, Archie and the leader continued facing off.
But this taut tension did not last long.
It was not because Archie had finally decided to give the leader what he wanted.
It was only because a silence even heavier than the heavy silence between them overwhelmed them.
At the unpleasant sensation, as if someone had forcibly grabbed him and thrown him into deep water, Archie sharpened his senses.
Then he turned his head toward where his senses led him.
A procession coming out of the city gate entered Archie’s eyes.
And at its head was him.
An arrogant-looking man with pale blond hair hanging down.
He slowly moved his eyes and looked at the man running ahead of Archie, then at Archie himself.
It was too late to return to human form now.
Ridiculously, even with his nerves sharpened, there was one thing that drew Archie’s gaze.
It was the white cargo wagon following behind the Imperial Family member.
Archie immediately realized why his gaze had stopped there.
That was another bait.
Bait the Imperial Family member would put out to catch monsters.
Even though he knew he could not see inside, Archie foolishly leaned forward to examine the interior without realizing it.
If he could not see inside, then he at least wanted to check the shadow cast outside it.
If there was a human woman with a build similar to Amy’s, then if that was so......
His lapse was only an instant, and the price was great.
The moment the sound of air splitting rang beside his ears, Archie twisted his body.
But he was not fast enough.
Something heavy flew in and blocked Archie’s vision, and immediately after, a spear-like arrow lodged in Archie’s shoulder.
Archie swallowed his breath at the pain digging into his shoulder.
Rolling his eyes, Archie realized that what had struck him was the man who had been fleeing ahead.
In the center of his chest was a large hole where the arrow had passed through.
It seemed that even the Imperial Family member could not shoot an arrow while avoiding the human in between.
Even so, unable to understand how the man had flown together with the arrow, Archie had to glare for a moment at the enormous arrow embedded in his shoulder.
It was that moment.
A huge shadow swept over Archie.
Archie stared blankly as the leader, who had leaped out as if flying over him, rushed toward the direction where the Imperial Family member stood.
And the moment he recognized him, Archie rose and chased after the mad leader.
The leader’s target was the damned white cargo wagon.
***
The screams of humans and the cries of terrified horses broke the solemnity of the procession.
The leader had lunged at the cargo wagon and was tearing that disgustingly white cloth to shreds.
Before his sharp claws could reach the humans riding in the cargo wagon, Archie seized the leader’s arm and threw him hard.
His shoulder, already pierced by the arrow, seemed to scream, but Archie’s nerves turned on their own toward the inside of the cargo wagon.
He swiftly scanned inside through the torn cloth.
The gazes of humans soaked in fear all turned toward him at once.
Fortunately or unfortunately, Amy was not inside.
Archie felt both relief and unease whirl inside him together.
Amy is not here.
Then where on earth is she?
All he knew was the fact that she had been dragged to the Temple in Hyre.
These humans were probably people who had been held at the Temple and then dragged here to be used as bait.
Then why was Amy not brought out together with these humans?
His body froze in confusion for only a few seconds.
The opponent was not foolish enough to miss that chance.
However, this time, Archie too did not let go of his wariness.
He fell from the wagon and dodged the enormous arrow that had flown in while cutting through the wind.
The arrow that missed its target flew on and pierced the chest of a knight near him, armor and all.
The Imperial Family member clearly did not care about his own mistake.
The fierce flood of arrows that followed chased close behind Archie.
The more Archie dodged, the more humans died to the enormous arrows.
Archie did not care whether other humans died or not, but it was not a pleasant sight.
Amy had said the Imperial Family possessed the power of gods, but that was simply a blood-mad lunatic, no different from the insane humans who followed him.
Perhaps it was because of that discomfort. When Archie unconsciously turned his head, he ended up seeing something even more unpleasant.
He directly faced the face of the Imperial Family member who was pouring fierce attacks at him.
On that face, which could probably be called beautiful, there was a deep smile.
Archie realized that he was purely enjoying this act.
Humans were prepared to throw away their lives at any time for that cruel god, but to that god himself, their lives clearly held no special value except making his play more entertaining.
He had not the slightest hesitation in killing not only the humans nearby, but even his own subordinates.
Whether that was godlike cruelty or mercilessness unworthy of a god, Archie did not know, but it was an opportunity for him.
All the humans were retreating in order to avoid his ruthless and indiscriminate attacks.
And the Imperial Family member’s quiver was beginning to show its bottom.
There were no humans left to hand him another weapon or fill his quiver.
If there was even a brief opening, he could escape from here.
Archie carefully dodged the arrows flying in and waited for his quiver to empty.
And at last, the cruel hunter’s final arrow left his hand.
Archie twisted his body, then used that rebound to quickly turn around.
Just before changing direction, Archie met the Imperial Family member’s eyes.
At that moment, the Imperial Family member’s eyes shone strangely.
Archie immediately realized what caused the strange joy filling them.
And in a very painful way.
Archie felt pain like when his shoulder had been pierced and fell forward.
For a moment, he did not understand what had just happened, and looked down at the enormous arrow piercing his thigh.
The arrow had ignored the flow of air, turned direction, and pierced through his leg with a bizarre movement.
-Haha! I cannot stop doing this annoying thing, if only to see that stupid expression.
The god burst into laughter.
In that moment, Archie felt extremely stupid.
This phenomenon, which had been happening quite often lately, grew even worse as he watched all the arrows embedded in the ground and in humans begin trembling at once.
Even while knowing it was a foolish action, he blankly watched the arrows that had pierced somewhere pull themselves out on their own.
A phenomenon whose principle could not be explained brought about one of two things.
Fear, or curiosity.
In Archie’s case, he was much more tilted toward the latter.
The god unintentionally bestowed the mercy of resolving his curiosity and fear.
Archie felt the air move unnaturally.
Wind gathered in round clumps behind his back and behind his leg.
That bizarre movement, which defied natural law, gave Archie even greater pain.
From each position, the two masses of air strongly pushed out the arrows embedded in Archie’s shoulder and leg.
Together with pieces of flesh, the two arrows pierced through his body and flew out.
Archie planted his face into the ground without even being able to scream.
This time, he could understand clearly what had happened.
Archie raised his trembling head and glared at the one who had performed this damned miracle.
Right. It seems humans worship him for more than simple blind madness.
While Archie ground his teeth, Renin approached him, bursting into intermittent laughter as if he simply could not hold it back.
-To think you dared come all the way to the city I protect. How should I deal with this stupidly reckless bastard, hm?
Grinning, he suddenly stopped walking.
Narrowing his eyes, he began looking Archie up and down.
The Imperial Family member, who furrowed his face as if trying to recall something, lowered his bow and quickly approached Archie.
Archie quietly watched him close the distance.
Because the only remaining option was to bite off his throat.
It was the moment his arrogant shadow finally fell beneath Archie’s head.
A giant shadow covered the god’s shadow.
-Uaaaagh!!!
The god let out an unsightly scream and retreated.
But the leader persistently bit into his shoulder and hung on.
With the strength of a mere monster, he would not be able to defeat a god, but the leader succeeded in dragging the god down to the ground.
Archie blankly watched as the god, tangled with the Werewolf, rolled across the ground.
The leader was not an idiot.
As if he had predicted his own defeat from the start, he immediately broke away from the Imperial Family member and ran.
Then he lunged at Archie, who had half-raised his upper body.
Flustered by the sudden attack, Archie grabbed the leader’s torso to push him away.
He could not understand why the bastard had thrown away the chance to flee and grabbed him.
You should be running away while that bastard is injured.
Archie had been about to scold him, but the moment he met the eyes of the blood-soaked Imperial Family member over the leader’s shoulder, he realized he was the foolish one.
Standing covered in blood, the Imperial Family member held a huge bow and arrow in his hand.
The shoulder revealed between the clothes torn by the leader’s teeth was clean, without even a scratch.
Despair and helplessness wrapped around him.
A strong enemy was a frightening opponent, but that was not a reason to give up the fight.
However, Archie did not know how to fight an enemy who did not die.
Archie stopped struggling and watched as the Imperial Family member’s arrow cut through the wind and flew toward them.
One arrow, two arrows, three arrows. So many arrows that counting became meaningless pierced through the leader and Archie.
Along with pain that turned his head white, Archie’s body fell backward.
To be precise, perhaps saying he was pushed backward would be more accurate.
He tried to endure even a little, but the leader, unable to control his body, had practically collapsed on top of him.
As if protesting to the leader covering him, Archie grabbed his body.
Then the force of the leader crushing Archie grew stronger and stronger.
-Stay still. He likes monsters with intact hides. He will lose interest in a hide soaked in blood and throw it away.
Soon, the leader, who had completely covered Archie’s body, whispered softly.
Only then did Archie realize the unpleasant fact that blood flowing from the leader’s body was soaking his body thoroughly.
And he glared at the leader, meaning for him to stop immediately.
But the leader still merely grinned, and did not seem to have any intention of obeying him.
In that moment, Archie regretted that he had not cut off this bastard’s head long ago and become the leader.
If I had been the leader, this bastard would not have ignored my words this badly.
Of course, he knew it was a complaint whose cause and effect had been smashed apart, but Archie was so confused that he did not care about such things.
However, Archie could not even enjoy that confusion as much as he wished.
The sound of horse hooves and two sets of footsteps approached them, who lay tangled together like vines.
