Chapter 234: A Piece of Truth
The moment the words monster hunt and god came out, the knight reacted violently, as if he would charge at Adol at any moment.
But Naria did not allow such resistance.
With a crunch, the shoulder Naria had twisted in her grip wrenched out of place.
“Kgh......!”
The man seemed to scream, but even that was blocked by Naria’s hand and could not come out.
When Adol looked at Naria in surprise, she twitched an eyebrow once.
“I didn’t break it. I dislocated his shoulder.”
“We can’t kill him yet. There’s still a lot left to ask.”
Adol, unable to throw away his anxiety, warned her.
“Don’t worry. If I meant to kill him, I’d have twisted his neck first.”
Naria reassured Adol while sweeping her eyes over the back of the knight’s neck, but her gaze was not very trustworthy.
The man too had clearly felt an anxiety similar to Adol’s.
Though he still glared at Adol as if he would kill him, that force had visibly weakened.
Adol stared into the man’s bloodshot eyes.
“Don’t feel relieved because I said we won’t kill you. I can make you feel like dying would be better. So don’t try any tricks and answer what I ask as much as you know.”
Adol held the old arrow in front of his eyes.
“Was it really because of monsters that an entire village disappeared?”
“Mmph! Mmph!”
The man gestured with his eyes toward the hand covering his face, conveying that if they wanted to hear his answer, they should remove this first.
Adol nodded to Naria to show that it was fine to remove her hand.
“You’re all going to die! You’ll pay dearly for daring to betray god!”
As soon as Naria removed her hand, the man shrieked.
“Shut up.”
The man, immediately struck on the head by Naria, glared at her with enough force to roll his eyes back behind the crown of his head.
It was abnormal madness that did not seem like it would answer obediently.
It meant words would not get through.
At the reaction more bizarre than expected, Adol could not know what method he should use to drag the truth out of his mouth.
Only two came to mind right away.
Beat him until he could not come to his senses, or beat him until he did come to his senses.
Naria noticed Adol’s agony and let out a small sigh.
Adol, surging with irritation, was about to open his mouth to snap that if she had a good method, she should try it.
“You’re the one who’ll die, not us. How dare you go around impersonating a knight of god.”
“What?”
“What did you say?”
At Naria’s rebuke, Adol asked back stupidly along with the man.
But at Naria’s gaze telling him to shut up and watch, he immediately closed his mouth.
“What are you talking about? Are you saying I’m a fake right now?”
Perhaps so flustered that he did not even notice the exchange of glances between the two, the knight tried to turn his body and look at Naria, forgetting even that his shoulder was dislocated.
“Then are you not? Why would a knight serving Lord Renin Abalan charge into a collapsing village like this, and alone at that?”
“I told you, I came to capture those criminals by Lord Renin’s order!”
“What criminals? They were being dragged off by some lowlifes, and I, no, we saved them.”
Naria lied without so much as wetting her lips.
“What kind of nonsense is that! Those bastards were offered yesterday as the Temple’s tribute! I came to capture them again!”
The man shouted as if frustrated, but Naria’s reaction was indifferent.
“Do you take us for fools? We just stopped two people saying the exact same thing as you from dragging the people away. I mean, I, no, we stopped them.”
“T-two people?”
The startled man looked back and forth between Naria and Adol, then turned his gaze toward the plank house.
In truth, the two Naria pointed to were Jing and Ria, and the ones Renin Abalan was chasing were Ratel and Jing, two people, but no one knew Ratel was moving while trapped inside the holy object.
Fortunately for Naria, Renin’s knight accepted the vague expression according to his own taste.
Naria did not miss the moment the man quieted.
“It means your lies no longer work on us. Those bastards earlier got away, but we can’t let you go too. You bastard who deserves to be torn limb from limb.”
At Naria’s abuse and denunciation, the knight struggled.
Though he failed to withstand the pain in his shoulder and crashed back onto the ground.
“You stupid bastard! Look at my armor and sword! I’m real! I would never do something like betray god!”
“If you think we’ll be fooled by that, the bastards earlier had armor and a wagon too.”
Naria said it while smacking the knight on the head.
By the time it reached this point, he shouted with a face as if he would die from injustice.
“Hey, go get a gag. We don’t need to hear any more. Let’s just kill him.”
When Naria tried to cover his mouth, the knight, startled, flopped his body like a fish out of water.
“W-wait, wait. Then who are you people, daring to say you’ll kill me?”
At the sudden question, Naria rolled her eyes briefly and quickly made up words.
“We are...... siblings. She and I wander around hunting monsters or animals to make money. We stopped by this village to rest for a while and met those lowlifes.”
Adol felt displeasure at the strong certainty that the role of the younger sibling here would be his, but he chose to quietly keep his mouth shut.
The man looked back and forth between Naria and Adol with eyes full of suspicion, but Naria had no intention of allowing him any more time to think.
“So your last words are only that. As expected of a fraud’s end. Hey, the people inside will be startled, so cover this one’s mouth.”
“Huh? Oh, uh. Got it.”
At Naria’s lie, Adol moved stiffly, not knowing how he should match her rhythm.
Fortunately, Adol’s awkward acting had no chance to continue any further.
“Th-the arrow! You saw that earlier! That is Lord Renin’s arrow. He uses it when hunting monsters. He likes it because once it gets lodged in, it doesn’t come out easily.”
The desperate man began rambling.
“Are you saying Lord Renin hunted monsters in this village?”
Adol asked as he stepped in front of the man, who had lost his reason and was babbling.
“Yes, more than ten years ago! I remember because he suddenly came all the way here, saying he would catch a Werewolf. He was furious afterward because he missed the biggest one with the best fur.”
Relief appeared on his face because someone was finally listening to him.
Before a gag was stuffed into his mouth, he was desperate to somehow reveal his identity.
“......I heard Lord Renin used humans for monster hunts.”
If he had made a normal judgment, the man would have closed his mouth here.
But he fell for Adol’s words, which sounded as if he already knew everything, and ended up revealing what he knew.
“Ah, he does use the remaining humans that way. The people sent from the Temple are originally something like offerings dedicated to Lord Renin. ......But where did you hear something like that?”
Only then did the man seem to realize he had babbled too much, and he closely examined Adol’s hardened face.
“......Long ago, there was...... a madwoman who said something like that.”
“Ah, that woman?”
Only then did the knight seem to understand, and he gave a hollow laugh.
“Damn it. I said something useless. This is why I told them to keep people’s mouths shut properly.”
Adol could not understand.
What is so funny that this bastard is laughing like that?
How can he be so calm after saying humans are fed to monsters?
The human before his eyes felt like trash lower than a beast.
But the man did not seem to feel any problem at all.
His gleaming eyes glanced at Adol and Naria as if searching for a way to make up for his mistake.
Adol felt like he knew what the man was thinking.
If he was released, he would surely think of killing Adol and Naria along with the people in the plank house.
As if that were the natural course.
The man continued speaking without noticing Adol’s disgust-filled gaze.
It seemed he thought the priority was to dispel their suspicion and be released.
He seemed to believe that once it was proven he was Renin’s knight, his release was guaranteed.
“Thanks to Lord Renin, more people can be saved through a small sacrifice. The humans offered by the Temple are ultimately humans who could not properly give offerings or committed crimes big and small. Those people wash away their sins by helping guarantee the safety of other diligent people. Thanks to that, monsters can be caught easily.”
Adol barely swallowed the nausea rising in him.
Not yet. There was still something left to ask him.
Enduring the unpleasant feeling of his vision turning white, Adol opened his mouth with difficulty.
“Then what is this village? Why did a monster hunt happen here of all places?”
“Because this was the village where the woman who spread that rumor you heard lived.”
Adol felt his heart sink.
But regardless of that, the man’s words continued.
“Lord Renin was angry, so he drove monsters into this place. The bastards that smelled blood gathered and gave off the smell of blood again, and once monsters had killed all the villagers, he began the hunt. Still, that was the only time he used an entire village. He got sick of it, saying hunting that way wasn’t fun.”
After finishing his words, he looked at Adol and Naria with a confident face.
“How about that? This much should be believable, right? No matter how well someone made it up, they couldn’t go this far, could they?”
Ignoring the look telling him to hurry and release him, Adol opened his mouth.
“Then, did all the villagers die like that? Without a single exception?”
The knight furrowed his brow as if wondering why he would ask such a thing, but soon obediently shook his head.
“One woman did make it out alive. Though it’s a bit strange to say she made it out alive. And it wasn’t exactly one person either...... Well, at any rate, she was alive until she left.”
“What does that mean? Say it properly!”
Adol grabbed him by the collar and pressed him.
Startled, the man hurriedly answered at the unusual strength tightening around his neck.
“A We-Werewolf took one human woman out with him.”
“What do you mean it wasn’t two people?”
“Because she was pregnant.”
Strength drained from Adol’s hand.
The man barely avoided planting his face into the ground and continued speaking.
“I remember wondering if he was stupid, had guts, or was just greedy. In a situation where his life was in danger, he still took away a pregnant woman, trying to eat even a little more. That bastard was the one Lord Renin regretted missing.”
At the same time Naria lightly nudged him with her elbow, Adol realized that he had been holding his breath.
“......Do you remember what the woman, the woman who was taken away, looked like?”
Adol asked, barely exhaling.
“How would I even remember that? I only still remember because the part about her being pregnant was so unusual.”
The man answered as if dumbfounded, then looked at Adol and Naria again with expectant eyes.
“How about it? Why don’t you let me go now? This should prove that I’m Lord Renin’s knight.”
“Yeah. It’s certain.”
“Then......”
He could not continue on to say that they should now release him and hand over the people in the plank house.
Because Naria struck the back of the man’s head hard.
The man toppled forward without even making a sound.
It was the moment Naria slightly raised her head to check Adol’s reaction.
No longer able to overcome the unpleasantness that felt as if his heart would burst, Adol began running outside the village.
“Damn it!”
Naria left the knight behind and began chasing after Adol.
At Adol’s back growing farther away at an inhuman speed, Naria ground her teeth.
The other time, she had been too late because she let her guard down, but she had no intention of repeating that mistake.
In order not to lose Adol as he quickly moved farther away, Naria kicked off her shoes.
Every time she stepped, Naria’s feet grew larger.
By the time the soles of her feet had turned into beast’s feet about twice the size of the shoes she had originally been wearing, Naria had returned to her original form, her whole body covered thickly in fur.
Naria’s lengthened arm snatched Adol’s shoulder.
Holding onto Adol as he lost his balance, Naria hugged him and rolled roughly across the ground.
Adol was still panting without properly catching his breath, and fur had already sprouted on his face.
“Ah, damn it. Come to your senses.”
This time too, Naria tried covering Adol’s eyes and ears, but it was no use.
Because Adol still did not recognize Naria and began clawing at the hand holding him.
Naria chewed back curses and tried to grab Adol’s arms.
But it was not easy to bind Adol, who was already showing grip strength far beyond that of humans.
It was the moment she thought that if she had a sack, she wanted to tie up this troublesome kid and hit him.
The edge of the old blanket sticking out from Adol’s chest entered Naria’s eyes.
The kid seemed to cherish it, but with that, it seemed she could bind him more easily.
Without any more time to think, Naria quickly grabbed the piece of cloth.
Fortunately, in that instant, Adol seemed to stop struggling.
Relieved by the fact that she could avoid tearing the thing he cherished, Naria wrapped Adol’s head in the cloth and bound him as he was.
How much time had passed? Naria felt Adol’s breathing slowly return.
Even after confirming that the hands tearing at her arm had quieted, Naria did not let go of Adol for a while.
A sniffling sound came from inside the blanket, and Naria could not think of even a single suitable word to comfort him.
