Chapter 564: Chapter 562: A Powerful Reason

Wang Liwen worked overtime today. Her husband wasn’t home, and her two sons—one in college, the other in high school—both lived in dorms.

She was home alone and quite bored, so she worked late whenever she could.

It was thanks to her diligence that the vaccine was almost ready.

With this vaccine, there would be no need to fear that highly contagious virus.

As she thought about the inside information she’d been privy to, a look of resentment flashed in Wang Liwen’s eyes.

’So there really are people, entire organizations, who would treat human lives as worthless for the sake of money.’

She had seen so much of it over in Africa.

Africa wasn’t just poor, as many imagined. Its people were oppressed, colonized, and ravaged by all sorts of diseases. It was far too severe.

Some of the most virulent diseases there had actually been deliberately created by man.

’How despicable!’

"Liwen, hello. Long time no see," Wu Xingjia said, standing in front of Wang Liwen.

Wang Liwen looked at him and quickly backed away. "You... Wu Xingjia, didn’t I tell you last time to stay away from me?"

Wu Xingjia hurriedly apologized. "Liwen, I’m sorry. Back then, I really didn’t mean to..."

Wang Liwen sneered. "Since you refused to heed my warning, don’t blame me for being ruthless!"

With that, Wang Liwen spun around and ran toward the virus research institute. Once inside, she shouted, "Someone is trying to kidnap me! They’re threatening me to hand over the formula for Vaccine X!"

The virus research institute was an extremely high-security research facility to begin with, established to counter the major viral and bacteriological labs run by the United States and Japan around the world.

The institute had been instrumental in keeping the viruses created by these countries from crossing the nation’s borders.

As one of the facility’s renowned experts, she was, of course, recognized by the security staff.

These men were all military veterans with exceptional combat skills.

Upon hearing her words, seven or eight security officers charged out like a pack of wolves.

It wasn’t just part of their job; catching a spy meant earning a commendation.

And just like that, Wu Xingjia was arrested!

As a special-grade expert, Wang Liwen was entitled to certain privileges. Especially when her personal safety was threatened, not only did the security department go on high alert, but State Security was also notified.

They discovered that Wu Xingjia was a citizen of the United States and currently worked in the pharmaceutical industry.

The initial plan was to detain him for seven days. However, given that the Wu family had a history of being traitors to the country, his detention was immediately extended to three months—more than enough time to investigate all leads.

Old Master Wu waited and waited, but his son never appeared. When he tried calling again, he had lost contact.

It wasn’t just Old Master Wu who couldn’t reach Wu Xingjia; even the staff at the Wu family’s company in Beijing couldn’t get in touch with him.

With no other options, Old Master Wu personally brought gifts and paid a visit to the Xu family.

Mr. Xu was feeding his fish when he heard that Old Master Wu had arrived. Quite curious, he said, "Let him in."

As soon as Old Master Wu entered, he greeted him enthusiastically. "Brother Xu, you’ve got to help me this time!"

Mr. Xu was slightly taken aback. ’Even back in the day, this Wu fellow was never this warm toward me!’

"You wouldn’t come here without a reason. Brother Wu, what is it?"

Old Master Wu sighed. "After you called me last time, I called that unfilial son of mine and told him to come back. But he didn’t return the next day. I called again, and they told me they’d lost contact with Wu Xingjia."

"We reported it to the police, but they haven’t found him. Brother Xu, I only have two sons. Wu Xingjia is the only decent one. As for Wu Xingbang... sigh, let’s not even talk about him. He’s a disgrace to his own name. Your son-in-law is a high-ranking official. Could I trouble you to ask around for me?"

Seeing him like this, Mr. Xu felt a bit sorry for him.

His two daughters had married well, one to a family on Hong Kong Island and the other in Southeast Asia.

As for his other son, Wu Xingbang, he was abroad indulging in every vice imaginable.

Taking stock of the Wu family, it seemed only Wu Xingjia was capable of shouldering responsibility, yet he was apparently infertile.

"Alright, don’t worry just yet. I’ll ask around for you," Mr. Xu agreed.

Back at the company, Mr. Xu specifically called Ye Feng over. "Did the Ye Family make a move against Wu Xingjia?"

"My dad’s been so busy he hasn’t been home in a month, and Ye Ling and Ye Chen are both at school," Ye Feng replied. "What happened to Wu Xingjia?"

Mr. Xu answered, "He’s gone missing!"

"What?" Ye Feng was stunned. "A living, breathing person... how could he just suddenly disappear?"

"This is what happened..." Mr. Xu repeated what Old Master Wu had told him to Ye Feng.

Ye Feng nodded. "I understand. I’ll call Aunt Wang tonight and ask."

That evening during dinner, Ye Feng told Han Xiaorui about Wu Xingjia’s disappearance.

Han Xiaorui was taken aback. "You don’t think Aunt Wang decided to eliminate the problem for good and just... offed him, do you?"

"Well..." Ye Feng paused, then shook his head. "Aunt Wang probably wouldn’t do something so extreme. Wu Xingjia is a nuisance, but I doubt she’d need to resort to that kind of revenge. Besides, she and my dad have a great relationship now, and Ye Ling and Ye Chen are still young. How could she do something like that when she hasn’t even seen them grow up and start their own families?"

Han Xiaoqing shook her head with a laugh. "Instead of letting your imaginations run wild, why don’t you just call and ask?"

"Exactly. Call her right after dinner," Han Xiaorui agreed. After all, they were far away and didn’t really know what was going on over there.

The moment they finished eating, Han Xiaorui couldn’t help but urge Ye Feng to make the call.

She was worried Ye Ling would be affected by Wu Xingjia’s presence. Still, this was an improvement over last time.

The last time Ye Ling was provoked, he had taken a train from Beijing all by himself to come see them.

This time, he knew to ask his big brother for help.

Wang Liwen had just gotten home and made herself a bowl of noodles. She was about to eat when the phone rang.

She answered the phone. "Hello, this is Wang Liwen."

Ye Feng said, "Aunt Wang, it’s me, Ye Feng. Today, Old Master Wu contacted my grandfather to ask about Wu Xingjia. He said he’s gone missing. Do you know where he is?"

Wang Liwen replied, "I do! He’s been detained and is currently under investigation."

"What?" Ye Feng was astonished. "How did he get detained?"

Wang Liwen answered, "I told them someone was attempting to steal my research."

"Well..." Ye Feng was stunned for a moment, then he laughed. "That’s a powerful accusation. Aren’t you afraid Wu Xingjia will reveal Ye Ling’s true identity?"

Wang Liwen chuckled softly. "I’m not. Because I’ve already confessed everything to the organization. I used to be afraid of people finding out, but not anymore."

"What?" Ye Feng was stunned again. "You really didn’t have to do that!"

Wang Liwen gave a bitter smile. "Ye Feng, I can’t just leave this time bomb ticking. It could go off at any moment and hurt Ye Ling, and it would implicate me as well."

"I was young and naive back then, and I was deceived by a scumbag. Your father got together with me to repay a debt of gratitude. But I told the organization that this has nothing to do with your father. He didn’t know at the time."

"Ye Ling grew up in the Ye Family and has had no contact with the Wu family. This whole thing is my fault. I don’t want to just let the mistake stand and allow someone to use it as leverage against me."

Ye Feng was taken aback. "Aunt Wang, your professional skills are outstanding, and you have so many accomplishments. Considering all your contributions over the years, the institute won’t give you a hard time."

Wang Liwen smiled. "I trust the organization."
