Chapter 362: Chapter 362: Heizi and Dahuang

Heizi and Dahuang were no ordinary dogs. They wouldn’t eat anything thrown by someone who wasn’t their master or someone they knew.

What’s more, their sense of smell was incredibly sharp. They had already detected something inside the chicken legs, and whatever it was gave them a very bad feeling.

Heizi and Dahuang barked nonstop, both to frighten the intruders outside and to alert their masters inside. "WOOF WOOF WOOF... WOOF WOOF WOOF..."

The four men outside heard the dogs continuing to bark instead of eating the chicken legs, so they threw a thick, padded cotton jacket onto the top of the wall.

The top of the wall was embedded with shards of broken glass, so anyone climbing over with their bare hands would surely be cut.

So, the men used a large, padded jacket to cover the top of the wall before starting to climb over.

"Boss, these two damn dogs won’t stop barking! As long as they won’t eat the chicken legs, there’s no way for us to get in."

Just as expected, after several continuous barks from Heizi and Dahuang, both Wu Jiao and Wu Yao heard them and immediately flicked on the lights.

Han Xiaorui, also quite alert, opened her eyes and stepped out of her room.

Wu Jiao was already at the second-floor window, about to shout, when Han Xiaorui stopped her. "Don’t shout! I’ll call the police!"

Wu Jiao secured the windows and doors. "Sister Xiao Rui, after you make the call, go to Pingping and An’an’s room and lock the door from the inside. Leave everything out here to us."

Han Xiaorui was pregnant, so she didn’t try to act tough. "Okay, I got it!"

She immediately called the police. An officer at the local station quickly answered. "Officer, someone is trying to climb over the courtyard wall by our peach forest. Please send help right away."

Officer Li was startled when he heard this. "Xiao Han, take the children and hide in one of the rooms. Protect yourself. We’re on our way now!"

Han Xiaorui replied, "Don’t worry, Officer Li. I won’t do anything reckless. I’m in the children’s room now. I’m safe."

"Good." Officer Li hung up and quickly gave orders to the other officers on duty.

He gathered the officers, had them check their weapons, and they were dispatched immediately, leaving just one officer behind to man the station.

Meanwhile, Wu Jiao and Wu Yao stood silently in the courtyard. They patted Dahuang and Heizi on the head, signaling them to stop barking.

The men outside heard the incessant barking and were hesitating. They were especially worried since the people inside were clearly awake and had turned on the lights.

"Boss, we need to get out of here! This family has a phone. They might be quiet now, but they’ve probably already called the police!"

Another man chimed in anxiously, "Yeah, Boss, if we don’t leave now, we might not get the chance! The police station is really close."

"I told you this family was trouble," another one grumbled. "Sure, they’re rich, but if they were easy targets, do you think we’d be the first ones to try and rob them?"

Just then, they heard people approaching. The leader gritted his teeth. "Let’s go! We’ll figure out another way!"

Hearing this, the men immediately pulled back and took off running.

While the men had been figuring out how to climb the wall, and while Dahuang and Heizi were stuck inside the yard, the Short-tailed Vipers kept in the peach forest had slithered out from the cold crevices between the rocks.

One of the men had only run a dozen steps when something bit his ankle. "AH!"

With a pained scream, the man started limping badly. He couldn’t see any large animal, so he instantly realized what happened. "Boss, a snake bit me!"

The man they called Boss rushed over, grabbed him, and dragged him forward. "Fourth, stop dawdling! The cops are right behind us. There are no venomous snakes around here. You’ll be fine, just run!"

As he spoke, they could faintly hear sounds of pursuit. If they didn’t go now, it would be too late.

"Freeze! Surrender and you’ll be treated with leniency!" Officer Li had arrived, but the men were already gone. He could faintly hear them fleeing, so he gave chase in that direction.

When Wu Jiao and Wu Yao heard Officer Li arrive, they opened the gate. "Officer Li, we’ve let Dahuang and Heizi out to track them."

Officer Li replied, "Good."

The station’s K-9 units had been sent back and weren’t on-site. Besides, there were very few police dogs in all of Shencheng, especially well-trained ones. Their station’s dogs were frequently loaned out.

Now that Wu Jiao and Wu Yao had released Dahuang and Heizi, with the two dogs leading the way, they were sure to catch the criminals.

After letting Dahuang and Heizi out, Wu Jiao and Wu Yao stood guard in the courtyard with steel pipes, scanning their surroundings.

With Dahuang and Heizi’s help, Officer Li was able to pursue them directly, taking no wrong turns.

Seeing the police closing in, the leader let go of his grip. "Fourth, it’s not that I want to leave you, but the cops are right on our tail. If we take you with us, none of us will get away. Don’t worry. If you get caught, we’ll take care of your parents, your wife, and your kids."

The man was dizzy and his vision was blurring. ’The snake that bit me must have been venomous,’ he thought. ’If I keep running, I’m actually going to die.’

’If I get caught, maybe the police will even take me to a hospital for treatment.’

"Boss, you guys go on without me. I’ll never rat you out. Just take care of my family." With that, the man collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath.

"Fourth brother, rest easy. We’re going now." The other three men all agreed, not daring to stop as they continued to flee.

Dahuang found the man who had been bitten by the viper, with Officer Li right on his tail. "We got one! Looks like he passed out. Xiao Wang, carry him out of here and get him to a hospital. Everyone else, with me! Continue the pursuit."

"Yes, Officer Li," Xiao Wang replied, and began carrying the thief out of the peach forest.

"These guys look like career criminals, so be careful," Officer Li ordered. "If they resist arrest, you’re cleared to fire. If you can confirm they’re unarmed, aim for the legs—we want them alive." The chase was far more dangerous in the dead of night.

’Compared to one of his colleagues getting hurt, Officer Li would rather be ruthless and take the initiative against these crooks.’

"Got it, Brother Li," the officers replied, continuing the chase behind Dahuang and Heizi.

Dahuang and Heizi picked up speed. Being powerful animals, they immediately pounced on the men once they caught up.

Their weight of over a hundred pounds, combined with the force of their pounce, sent the two rearmost men tumbling to the ground. The dogs then bit each of them on the leg.

The two men grimaced in agony, screaming nonstop. "I give up! I surrender! Don’t let them kill me!"

’They just wanted to steal some money and valuables, not die for it!’

Seeing this, the leader panicked. Two legs were no match for four. He had just reached the bank of a river, and without a moment’s hesitation, he jumped in.

’He thought he would be safe once he was in the water.’

But the leader had forgotten one crucial thing: where do you think the doggy paddle comes from?

Dogs can swim.

Especially dogs like Heizi and Dahuang—intelligent and powerfully built. They could swim quickly not just in a river, but even in the ocean.

After the leader jumped into the river, Heizi and Dahuang leaped in right after him without hesitation. They swam even faster than he did.

Even though the man was holding a knife, his movements were severely restricted in the water. Heizi bit down hard on the hand holding the weapon, forcing him to drop the dagger into the river.

The man punched Heizi’s head, but the dog refused to let go.

Dahuang latched onto his other arm. The man let out a pained scream and finally stopped struggling.
