The Scumbag's Guide To Heroism
Chapter 586 | A Gravitational Event
Chapter 586: 586 | A Gravitational Event
〘 No. It is not system-originated. I remind you that I have a very short list of things I cannot affect and it has been getting longer at a rate I would describe, if I had feelings, as alarming. 〙
"You don’t have feelings."
〘 I have opinions. This is one of them. 〙
I went back inside and shut the door and leaned against it, which is a thing I do now apparently, lean against doors after women leave, like the door and I are processing something together.
The tea was still warm. Chamomile, the boring one, because I almost died. I drank half of it standing at the window looking at the Crucible dome and the scaffolding and the orange workers moving across it like the whole building was a wound getting stitched by people who’d never seen the inside of it.
Two temptation gauges had moved in a single evening without me doing a single deliberate thing.
〘 Update. Rina Soleil: 29%. Vivienne Cross: 12%. Note: neither increase resulted from a quest, a mission, or a directed action. You were sitting still. You are becoming a gravitational event. Diane used that phrase. She was correct. 〙
"I don’t want to be a gravitational event."
〘 The universe did not consult you. Neither did I. 〙
I finished the tea. Set the cup down on the desk next to the protein bar wrapper I’d forgotten about two hours ago. Stood there a second, then moved to the terrible mattress and sat, pressing two fingers against my sternum, feeling for the second pulse.
There it was. Offset. Patient. The exact word Vivienne had used without ever having felt the thing herself, which meant she’d read the shape of it from the outside with the same precision I could measure from the inside, which meant Diane was right. Vivienne was the second most dangerous person to my file after Diane herself. Neither of them had needed to open a folder. They’d just looked.
I lay back. Counted the ceiling tiles, the way I’d been doing since week one because the alternative was staring at nothing and letting my brain run loops. Ninety-six. Still ninety-six. Some numbers don’t move even when a machine at the front door calls you an anomaly out loud in front of a woman holding a stylus, or when two gauges climb in a single evening while you’re sitting still doing nothing but existing in a room.
My phone buzzed. I picked it up without moving anything else, the way you do when your body’s already committed to lying down but your brain hasn’t agreed to stop yet.
Sloane. you never texted me before sleep
it’s not sleep yet. it’s staring at the ceiling doing math.
that’s your version of relaxing and it’s concerning
rina came by. brought me tea. I paused, thumb over the screen, and then did the thing I’d promised Sloane I’d do, which was tell her before she found out. saturday i’m helping her test her aspect. field zeta. six am. no cameras.
The three dots appeared, vanished, appeared. I could feel her through the bond from across campus, warm and steady and then a spike of something that wasn’t quite jealousy because jealousy was a Felicity-shaped word and this was a different shape. Territorial. Careful. A girl deciding whether she was allowed to have an opinion.
okay
okay?
you told me first. that was the deal. i’m choosing to be a normal person about this. it’s an experiment. i’ll let you know how it goes. Another buzz. also if she puts her hands on your back i will feel your heart rate change from across campus and i want that on the record
noted.
and vivienne cross was in the hallway wasn’t she
I stared at the message.
how do you
because your heart did the thing twenty minutes ago. the flat thing. the thing it does when someone’s smarter than you and you’re enjoying it and hating that you’re enjoying it. Buzz. i’m not mad. i’m cataloguing. koda owes me eleven dollars either way. goodnight lukas. text me before sleep for real this time.
goodnight sloane.
i love you. this is not up for discussion and if you make it weird i’ll drive over there and make it weirder.
i love you too.
The bond went the specific temperature it goes when Sloane reads a truth and stops fighting it, warm all the way down, and then quieted into the frequency of a girl falling asleep angry and content in equal measure across a campus full of new checkpoints and licensed Heroes on rotation.
I set the phone face-down on the nightstand next to Marcus and Reina.
The two of them looked out from the frame with the sun behind them, and I still couldn’t reach the grief that belonged to the kid whose face I was wearing, and I still felt the specific guilt of that, and it was still the most honest feeling I had in a body full of lies. Odette had known Reina. Had said she taught her how to fall. I had eleven memories and none of them were that one, and a stranger had handed it to me in a parking lot like spare change, and I’d had to sit there and perform recognition for something I’d never lived.
Saturday, I’d stand in an abandoned field and help a girl with sheep horns find out what she was capable of when she stopped apologizing.
Monday, I had a call with a woman who’d priced my future at a factor of ten and told me to assume the larger number.
Somewhere out there a butler in a mask and a boy who threw black fire and a creature with six horns and no Core had walked backward into a wall of static and vanished, and the dead thing that made that boy the way he was had a name I’d killed nine years ago in a body that wasn’t mine to remember.
And underneath all of it, offset, patient, a second heartbeat I couldn’t call up on command and couldn’t turn off and couldn’t explain to the one interface that was supposed to be able to explain everything.
〘 You are stalling. You have been staring at the photograph for four minutes. I want to note, for the record, that four minutes of grief-adjacent staring generates zero progression and I am not judging you, I am informing you, there is a difference. 〙
