The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's
Chapter 118: Under the Gate
All the white routes in Grand Meridian flickered.
The black seed had disappeared below the stone blocks of the south gate. It was not gone. A soft red pulse rippled across the ground. The common ledger lines at every intersection of the city dimmed, then brightened, then dimmed again as if something below was probing each choice for a weakness.
Marcus turned away from the battlement. "The root heart is still holding, but the underground routes are being accessed."
Elena pressed the transfer book against her chest. "I can divert the surface traffic. I cannot see what is happening under the gate."
Zareth lay in white root chain near the dead mobile furnace. The crack in his red mask had revealed more of his face now: weary eyes, ash-dark skin, and no obvious certainty left.
"I can," he said.
Taryn’s spear came up. "Why would we trust you?"
"You should not," Zareth answered. "But I know what the seed will do. It will grow into the old foundation channels, learn your city’s routes, then offer them back as contracts. If it reaches the root heart, it does not need an army."
Austin Veyron looked at the dark line below the gate.
"You lead us," he said.
Taryn turned on him. "Austin Veyron."
"He walks in front. He wears the chain. We keep witnesses on every step."
Zareth gave a humorless smile. "That is almost trust."
"It is not."
The south gate had an old maintenance stair beneath the guardhouse. Marcus opened it with a rusted key. Inside, narrow stone steps and black water dropped away. The air smelled of wet dirt, iron, and something sweetly rotten.
Austin Veyron took Veyra, Taryn, Sable, Calder, Rin, Kesra, and Zareth underground. Elena stayed with Marcus to hold the surface routes. Before the stair door closed, she pressed the transfer book’s relay token into Austin Veyron’s hand.
"Do not let it write your decisions for you," she said.
He nodded.
The lower tunnels had been built before Grand Meridian became the Freehold. Old city builders had used them for water, trade, and emergency escape. Now red roots threaded the ceiling like veins. They did not attack at first. They pulsed in time with the black seed’s distant heartbeat.
Zareth stopped at a junction where four tunnels met.
"The seed has found the route spine," he said. "It will be below the old customs vault."
"Why did Vordessa build this kind of seed?" Kesra asked.
"Because walls are honest targets," Zareth replied. "Everyone expects a gate to be attacked. No one expects the city to invite the attack inside by using its own routes."
Sable touched a red root with the tip of her broken crown shard. The root tried to curl around it, then recoiled.
"It is not just mapping," she said. "It is asking. It wants someone below to say yes."
A cry came from the left tunnel.
"Help!"
Veyra moved, but Austin Veyron caught her arm.
"Role check," he said.
The voice called again, weaker this time.
"Please. I am stuck."
Rin crouched at the tunnel entrance, bow raised. "One living person. Maybe."
Zareth’s expression tightened. "It will put a captive near the seed. Someone who knows the city routes."
They followed the voice.
The tunnel opened into a collapsed customs vault. Stone shelves had fallen across the floor. At the center, a human man in a route warden’s blue coat was hanging above a black pool by red root cords. His wrists were bound. A thin command crown shaped from root matter hovered over his head.
"Do not say my name," he gasped. "It knows it."
Austin Veyron recognized him from the south-gate staff. Loran, one of Marcus’s runners. Adult, reliable, always carrying bundles of ledger slips between stations.
The black pool rippled.
MAKE HIM STAY.
The seed’s voice was small. That made it more dangerous.
Taryn moved toward Loran, but the root cords tightened. A red line appeared at the man’s throat.
Zareth stepped forward. "The crown is a reciprocal bind. If you destroy it with force, the seed writes his route knowledge into itself."
"What breaks it?" Veyra asked.
"A refusal from the person it is binding, witnessed by people it cannot control."
Loran’s face was white with pain. "I refuse," he said.
The crown did not move.
"It wants more," Sable said. "It wants him to think he has nowhere else to go."
Austin Veyron looked at the tunnel behind them. "Loran, you have a route back to the surface. You have a team waiting. You have people who will help you choose your next work after this. Do you accept that route?"
Loran’s eyes found the white relay token in Austin Veyron’s hand.
"I accept," he said.
The token flashed.
Veyra, Taryn, and Kesra spoke one after another, not offering possession, only presence.
"Witness."
"Witness."
"Witness."
The root crown cracked.
Rin’s arrow severed the highest cord. Sable cut the second with her shard. Austin Veyron caught Loran as he fell, then rolled clear when the black pool erupted.
Stone guardians climbed out of it.
They were built from old customs statues—faceless judges in long coats of granite, their mouths filled with red script. One swung a stone arm at Austin Veyron. He ducked, drove the white chain around its wrist, and pulled it off balance.
Veyra shattered its knee. Kesra’s spear pierced the chest line where the red root entered stone. The guardian split apart.
Three more advanced.
Calder pressed his glowing scar to the vault wall. "They are using the old route records. I can confuse their target list."
"Do it," Austin Veyron said.
The gray light from Calder’s wrist spread through the floor carvings. The guardians hesitated, turning toward empty corridors where the route records now claimed their targets had gone. Rin and Sable destroyed them before the command could correct itself.
The black pool narrowed, becoming a sinkhole at the far end of the vault. Red roots descended into it in a tight spiral.
"The seed is below," Zareth said.
Loran clutched Austin Veyron’s shoulder. "There is another route. A service pipe. It connects to the root heart if the seed has already reached it."
Austin Veyron’s stomach tightened.
Below the vault, the black seed waited in a chamber of wet stone. It was larger now, the size of a clenched fist, surrounded by loops of red root that sank into every wall.
DEVOUR woke with immediate hunger.
Austin Veyron could eat the seed. He could take the network before it took the city. The instinct was simple, brutal, certain.
Sable stood close enough that her sleeve brushed his.
"If you take it whole," she said softly, "it will take the routes with it. You will carry every choice this city has made. That is not power. That is another crown."
Zareth dropped to one knee beside the chamber. "There is a containment pattern. I can guide it, but it needs a countermark from the person the seed tried to bind."
Loran looked at the black roots. His hands still shook.
"You do not have to," Austin Veyron told him.
Loran swallowed. "It used my routes. I want to help close them."
The man stepped forward by choice.
Zareth spoke the forge pattern, each word stripped of command. Taryn laid her spear across the chamber floor to mark the outer circle. Sable pressed the broken crown shard to the red roots, turning their force inward. Calder redirected the last active command line into the old customs records, where it looped harmlessly through names that no longer existed.
Loran put his palm beside Austin Veyron’s on the wet stone.
"I choose this city," he said.
The white relay token answered.
Austin Veyron opened DEVOUR—not to eat the seed, but to consume the claim that made it master of the routes.
The black fist shuddered.
He swallowed a single word.
ENTER.
The seed’s roots recoiled from the walls. The containment ring sealed around it in dull white metal. The underground routes stopped pulsing red.
Above, the common ledger flared back to full brightness.
Zareth exhaled slowly. "Contained. Not destroyed."
Austin Veyron looked at the sealed seed. Through it, he could feel a deeper pattern moving east and north, a subterranean line running from Grand Meridian toward the Ash Meridian’s remaining forge sites.
Vordessa was not sending attacks at random.
She was building a road below every border.
"We cannot wait behind the walls," Austin Veyron said.
Veyra looked at him. "Not again."
"No." He tightened his grip on the white root chain. "We take the ground she is using. We go back into the Ash Meridian, and we cut the road at its source."
Far below the gate, the contained seed pulsed once.
It was listening.
